I'm not usually blessed with winning very much in competitions, but your tales of winning brought back memories of buying raffle tickets and hoping NOT to win so as not to draw attention to our 'illegal' presence.
Back in my yoof, we got wind of a Glaxo social club 'do' going on, now this was in the days of pubs shutting at 10.30pm, and this 'do' went on until midnight, AND likely had Women of a more desirable type than usual pub! So, 4 or 5 lads all piled along and tried blagging our way in, after initial refusal they looked us up and down a second time, decided we weren't drunk, were smartly dressed, perfectly polite (got to be polite when blagging! ), and on condition of buying a shed load of raffle tickets, we could go in.
Result, were in! All going well until the raffle was drawn, now we may have been cheeky chaps but were not inclined to take the total wee-wee by claiming raffle prizes, so we ignored the draw and carried on drinking subsidised booze and looking for likely ladies.
Multiple appeals for the holders of numerous tickets to claim their prizes went unheeded, then the 'busy body' woman who sold us the tickets spotted us and 'insisted' we check our tickets as she was 'sure' winners were from the books she'd sold ours from. We waffled and made excuses of not knowing where they were etc. but this bloody woman was not the sort to be defied, so she badgered until we produced said tickets, and of course they'd won all the best prizes that were as yet unclaimed! Talk about hole in the ground swallow us up, beam us up Scotty, or can I please drop dead NOW! - this blasted woman had announced to all that we had the winning tickets, we then had the walk of shame across the empty dance floor to claim our prizes under the ill disguised glare of highly disgruntled Glaxo employees all mumbling (loudest mumble I've ever heard!!!) "who the f*** are this lot?". We may have been brazen in many ways, but that was plain embarrassing. All we wanted was a late drink and to chat up some girls in a discrete and subtle fashion, but Miss Busy Body had thwarted that plan, we were now floodlit 'villains' in the eyes of probably 200 Glaxo staff!
Think we took our prizes and beat a hasty retreat before the trouble started, didn't get much of a late drink, certainly didn't get to pull any girls, but I suppose we did have several bottles of whiskey etc. to compensate. ..... but of course Glaxo social club was off limits for the foreseeable future!
