Good point Josh! This little side-issue has been a bugbear of mine for a long time.
Being self-employed, i NEVER charge by or give an hourly rate. I always quote a price to complete the job they require doing.
If i wanted a new cutch in my van, i ask the shop who does my repairs 'how much to fit a clutch'?
I get the price, i tell them to do the job - i then pay the price!
I dont give a monkeys how long it takes....as long as i get a good job done, that is all im bothered about - after all, i agreed a price to replace the clutch..and a new clutch i have got - that is it.
It is amazing how many times people question the length of time a person takes to do a job, in relation to the price quoted.
I can do in a couple of days - a quality job, that would take the customer three or four solid weekends in a row. And when you think about that they are giving up these precious days..the ineptitude of how they go about it, coupled with the back-ache all week at their day job, you would think that they would just be happy the responsibilty had been taken off their shoulders.
They seem to somehow feel cheated that you have come along...with all your gear and know how...got stuck-in..and done it in an organised methodical way, and got the job polished off in what seems like no time at all.
On the other hand...if you were to spin it out for weeks, they would feel smug, and be happy to pay, safe in the knowledge that they had 'got their moneys worth' out of you!
If you want something doing, and either won't or cant do it yourself - you have to pay a price commensurate with what the job is worth to have someone do it for you.
You either agree that price...or the job is left undone, you do not agree a price - then question it after the job is done (properly), in less time than you expected.
