Manchester Central is the new name for what everyone in Manchester knows as the G-MEX. You can get a tram from Piccadilly to G-MEX or it's about 10-15 minutes walk. There are plenty of street maps around the city centre.

We went to the last one and got completely lost driving round some one-way streets. When we asked people for directions you wouldn't believe how many of them didn't know where Manchester Central was - some of them thought it was a new train station! - but when I said G-MEX everyone knew! Tbh I don't know why it's had a name change, I think Manchester Central is very ambiguous and could mean anything. Although I think many years ago it was a railway station.

There is nothing new about the name, Manchester Central was one of the railway stations, along with London Road (now Piccadilly) ,Exchange and Victoria, ( which were linked by the longest railway platform in Europe --I think.) The tragedy is that everyone recognises G-Mex which means what? But is unaware of a wealth of heritage around "central" in railway architecture. Notably the Midland Hotel, the exhibition hall was the station, and the goods warehouses adjacent. Anyway, enough of days spent train spotting on the end of windy platforms.

There is parking under the exhibition hall ( again these were goods warehouses), but this does tend to get full particularly during the week, and can be a bit tight for space , even if you do get in. If you aim for this parking, it can be a bit frought if you are turned away at the last minute, and are cast adrift in the streets around.

Best by far is to use the Park and Ride then tram, as suggested on the web site, but some of these parking sites also get full of commuters, and don't be tempted to park  outside the designated spaces, cos you will get a ticket.

They don't make it easy to visit the show. Sorry to be negative, but this must be the daftest venue for an exhibition on the circuit. As an exhibitor, it is a nightmare getting your stuff in and out at build up /break down, and having gone through the pain, your poor visitors have to work out how to get there like a military exercise, and pay for the privelege. The weather is usually diabolical, a few years ago, the wind was blowing tiles off the roof of the Midland onto cars below.

These of course are the rantings of someone who is now retired, and glad to be off the circuit, but if you persevere and get there, do enjoy the visit, and remember the poor salesperson has to do it every day for a week.

Have a good show guys.

AJ

(andy2244)..that tall monstrosity is the Beetham Tower and I think the Hilton Hotel is inside it (there is parking around, and below Manchester Central) and the nearest railway station by foot is Deansgate - the tram stops there too!
