Wasdale campsite nestles under the Scafell mountain range at the head of beautiful Wastwater, the deepest lake in England, with its distinctive Nordic character and the pyramidal peak of Great Gable reflected in its waters. This stunning place is attractive for its remoteness and tranquillity.

As well as space for tents, Wasdale is home to eight heated camping pods, 3 tipis, a bell tent and offers 11 campervan pitches with hard standings and limited electric hook ups.

There is no parking on pitches and for that reason we are unable to accommodate roof or trailer tents.

The hundred tent pitches on Wasdale Campsite are informally spread across this very natural campsite with numerous trees and hedges dividing up the meadows.

Facilities at the campsite include an on-site shop, a toilet and shower block, washing-up areas, a laundry room, and charge points for electric bikes.

England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, is within striking distance from the site as are many other high fell walking routes. As the birthplace of British rock climbing, Wasdale offers true mountaineering in the surrounding fells. A great base for climbers of all abilities, the valley offers classic routes such as Napes Needle and Central Buttress.

Our staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the area and will be happy to answer your questions. Be sure to ask for advice about the best walking routes if youre unfamiliar with the area.

Please note: in order to preserve the peaceful nature of this site, parties of more than 4 adults are not accepted. Organised groups can be accepted by prior arrangement with the site only.

Nearby Attractions

The renowned Wasdale Head Inn is a short walk away for those who prefer pub grub to camp food! There are also some great family attractions a short driving distance away such as La'al Ratty, Muncaster Castle, The Beacon and Rum Story at Whitehaven. In the summer the sandy beaches at Silecroft, Millom, Drigg and St. Bees will allow you to replenish your energy after a hard day on the fells. Nearby St Bees offers a beach and a bird sanctuary.
