We chose this campsite because of all the excellent reviews on here. It was our last campsite in Spain before returning to Ireland, and it provided a nice contrast to the other (mostly coastal) campsites we stayed at. It's very rural, set in a tiny hamlet, yet close to a slightly bigger village and only a 15 minute drive from the town of Cabezón de la Sal.

It's exactly like the other reviewers described. The toilet/shower block is amazing, spotlessly clean, with soap, toilet paper, hand driers, marble sinks, fancy taps, and some lovely antique chairs in the porch!

Unfortunately, the restaurant described by other reviewers seems to have closed in the past year. We ate in the Taverna in the local village, the food was excellent, especially the seafood. The prices were more expensive than €10 a head, but we felt that it was reasonable for the quality of food served.

The two sons were running the campsite, in fact we didn't meet any staff members over the age of 30 when we were here. This wasn't a problem as the campsite was run very efficiently and with a helpful, friendly attitude.

We had a day and two half days of rain here. If you are going to experience rain in a campsite, you couldn't pick a better one as there was so much covered space. We really enjoyed reading our books in the lounge area sipping their delicious Albariño wine, at €2 per glass.

The river was so nice for swimming, the water was fresh, clear and warmer than I expected it to be. We spent some time walking, running and cycling around the quiet country roads in the area, meeting only cows with bells and horses looking over the fences.

The little shop in the village is a delight. It is like stepping back in time. The staff and customers greet you when you walk in, making you feel like a regular customer.

We really enjoyed our stay here, we felt that it was a very authentic experience, in a beautiful scenic area.

Had an enforced stop here due to missed ferry, very rustic and rural, roads in narrow but manageable, as long as nothing coming out!

Very rustic, do read campsites website, lovely area, think snow capped mountains, green pastures, rivers if you love nature its for you.

Nearby Comillas and San Vincence de Barqueres coasts lovely. Facilities clean and plots good but electrics a bit ancient.

Would come again.

The family run site luckily spoke English and were friendly, were able to accommodate us at short notice, had us hooked up in no time at all,

The facilities were excellent, spotlessly clean.

Beautiful surroundings for walks, biking. Lovely fresh running river. Lots to see!

Amazing well run site. The pitches are of good size.

Facilities are superb. Toilet and washing facilities are probably best I’ve ever come across.

Site is superbly located especially for access to Santander port.

I will definitely recommend and will return again and again and again!

This was our first ever Spanish site. We travelled straight to the site from Santander. We found it quite easily as we had already followed the route on Google street maps and it was very interesting to spot the police station, various villas and even the wheelie bins spotted on google street maps. There was a slight detour around the church when we arrived, but it was well marked so no problem.

Check in was quick and we managed to understand each other with our very limited Spanish. The owner walked around the site to help us choose the pitch (they are mainly grass and virtually unmarked) and he then connected the electricity 6amp.

The site was in a lovely area with plenty to see and do, although it was raining when we were there so didn't get much chance to explore. We walked around the village which seemed quite traditional.

The facilities were absolutely fine, clean and well equipped. The owner was friendly and helpful and next time we will dine in the restaurant on site.

Word of warning : if you are heading south from the site do not turn left when you get to the main road, especially towing a caravan. We did, and ended over 4,000ft up a mountain after miles of twisting almost single track road. The view was fantastic and worth the trek, but we had a few hairy moments to get there.

This is such a beautiful and peaceful site. Paradise. There is a signpost on the way in which says "respect the silence" and that says it all. This was the last stop for us on our North Spain / Basque tour before heading to Santander. We intended this to be our laid back site but there was so much in the area we did as much here as anywhere else.

The site itself is in the countryside, surrounded by hills and beside a river alongside which there is a decent walk. The site is divided into 2 sections, we chose the more peaceful second section farther from reception. Most days we watched for the sparrowhawk that made its regular visit to the tree beside our pitch.

There is no pool or restaurant although there is a small cafe / bar selling simple bread breakfasts and drinks in the evening, and a spot in the river where you can splash about. One quirk is the owner has to unlock your EHU box before connecting. The shower block has sinks made of marble, and it is of course all spotlessly clean.

Places to go nearby - Santillana del Mar with its cobbled streets, medieval buildings and church, Comillas with its building by Gaudi, the beautifully located San Vicente de la Barquera with its ruined castle on the hill overlooking the harbour town, the beautiful cobbled mountain village of Barcena Mayor, the extensive remains of the Roman town of Juliobriga outside Reinosa.

The nearest supermarket is in the town of Cabezon de la Sal 12 km away. There is a restaurant in the little village of Sopena 1km walk away which does authentic Cantabrian cooking for just 10 Euro each. There is also a cheese factory in the same village (factory is a bit strong, its a family run business in a large house) from where you can buy wonderful local sheep and goats cheese.

I would go back in a heartbeat.

Our second visit to this delightful site.

I won't repeat what remains factual from my first review.

There have been some additions; the WIFI now extends beyond the confines of the Reception area. We managed reception on our 'plot' some 75 metres from Reception, most of the time. And all the time with the aid of the 'iboost' kit I carry.

An excellent BBQ area with superb ovens and smooth black marble top prep/eating tops plus rustic tables and chairs and benches. The best BBQ set up I've seen in a campsite anywhere!

There is a great bochas pitch. Sort of cross between pétanque, ten pin bowling and skittles.

So calm and peaceful.

Two coffees and two liquors for 5 euros last night.

And, the little restaurant bar in the village is still offering a three course meal (any time of day) with a bottle of wine included, at 10 euros a head. And the food is excellent.

Stayed here for I night as on the way to Santander and now wished we had been able to stay longer and explore the area. Access to the site must be taken with care but is manageable.

The site has been excellently maintained with grass pitches, most of which were flat a 6amp supply. With an on site resteraunt which we did not use.

The shower block is fantastic with loads of showers and hot water, comfortable chairs if you did have to wait, washing machines and an ironing board as well as the usual pots and clothes washes and the owner is pleasant and helpful.

The area is fantastic and so different from other parts of Spain with grass rather than dust, There is a fete every Sunday in one of the local villages with cattle being exhibited as well as the usual stalls.

Santander is approximately 35 miles away and is reached in less than an hour.

Will use again

A real ‘discovery’, and the highlight of this year’s camping, for us.

A family run site based at the converted old mill (El Molino de Cabuerniga), in the middle of the Seja National Park and adjacent to the River Seja, it is beautifully laid out with several different areas and is open all year.

Shade is abundant, but so are sparsely covered pitches, if that is what you want. There are one hundred ‘parcelas’.

There are three ways in to the campsite … if you have a big unit, you may find it easier to go to the second entry road, about half a mile up the road beside the bar/restaurant of Sopeña.

The meticulously cleaned and maintained ‘Services’ block is sumptuous … I’ve never seem double basins in marble tops with individually wood carved mirror frames and large pots of flowers placed between the adjoining basins. The quality of the taps are five star hotel in design and function. Paper towels continuosly available.

The toilets are the widest cubicles I’ve yet seen on a campsite (paper provided), as are the showers, which are powerful and temperature adjustable (as hot or cold as you like). Good wooden slats to stand on under the shower, with tiled area for the rest.

There is a washing machine and dryer, plus iron and ironing board, as well as a row of handwashing sinks.

The washing up area includes a huge SS sink for extra large items as well as the usual row of normal sinks.

Clothes drying frames are available for everyone … just take to your site and return when finished.

The reception office provides the usual plethora of information, and the manager is extremely helpful.

The Café/Bar comprises a large indoor section replete with tables and comfortable armchair seats (carvers) …. There are books available to borrow in english, spanish and several other languages, as well as a large table covered with magazines, comics etc … a variety of games can be borrowed from the bar.

The whole room is more like a genteel club room than a campsite.

Meals are not served, but continental breakfast (coffee and tostadas with jam/honey … large portions … at 2. 50 euros), and Bocatas (large sandwiches … take a loaf of bread, cut it in two and fill … 3. 50 to 4 euros), and plenty of drinks at extremely good prices … e. G. A large apple liqueur with ice in a tumbler: 1 euro … expresso coffee: 1 euro.

There is a shop at the bar that provides a small but decent range of interesting eatables, and bread is available all day, without having to pre-order! (maybe other sites could learn from this!)

Outside the Main room is an open air, covered, area … also available for eating and socialising, but is the main WIFI reception area, which is free.

Cars are not allowed to be used between midnight and 8 a. M. … a good carpark is provided immediately beside the reception area (we left the car there most of the time).

Good swimming is available in the river at the ‘Pozo Colorado’, just a few metres from the campsite, which more than makes up for there being no pool on site. There is also a good children’s play area next to the reception, with a range of equipment.

When we were there the greatest number of campers were in tents … three camper vans, half a dozen caravans (mostly not recent models) … two TT’s and two FC’s …

The site also rents apartments and stone built ‘cabins’.

From the campsite there are a lot of easy, flat, bike rides, plus as many hilly ones as you like …. You can ride up to the ski station … about a 20km climb. ATB’s can be hired on site.

There are dozens of walking routes, flat hilly, mountainous … whatever you fancy (maps from reception).

Some very pretty villages along the valley.

The nearest supermarket (Lupa) is in Cabezon … ten minutes by car …

The site is about thirty minutes drive from the coast … affording the delights of San Vincente, Comillas etc (The first is well worth a visit … if you like fish, San Vincente offers, arguably, the best fish restaurants in Spain … also, the biggest and yummiest ice-creams from the Regma Helados ‘shop’, beats the pants off all the opposition … it’s on the main road out (going west) after you turn right at the central plaza … about thirty metres on the right hand side) … a bit further west, another twenty minutes on the motorway is the delightful town and harbour of Llanes.

Santander is under an hour on the motorway (free).

The outstanding Picos area is about an hour (Potes), an hour and a half to Fuente De.

Santillana (much visited medieval small town) and the famous Altamira Cave paintings (a perfect replica of the original can be visited …. To see the original you have to book a long time ahead, and numbers are severely restricted) are thirty minutes.

Barcena Mayor (recently restored medieval working village) is twenty minutes.

Bilbao and the unique Guggenheim, about two hours (motorway).

The dazzling Soplao caves are about twenty minutes.

Five minutes away there’s a small adventure park (climbing routes … zip wire, bridges, high wires, etc … with archery, mini golf, trampolines, water games, paintball and quads … excellent for children, less challenging for adults … except quads, which are fun to tour about on)

Canoes/Kayaks are available at Unquera (thirty minutes).

We were there for eleven days … one rainy day, one overcast day, and the rest was wall to wall sun.

As you are high-ish, it can get cool at night.

If you want a week each at two different locations, I can’t think of a better choice than one week here, and a second week at Camping Las Islas Picos de Europa, just outside Potes, which will give you a really good base for the Picos … see my review.

And … the clincher … the little restaurant/bar in the adjacent village (ten minutes walk) offers a three course meal (at any time of day) … three choices of each course (large helpings!, and good food), plus a whole bottle of red wine between the two of us, with soft drinks for the girls … and hot crusty bread with everything … for … wait for it … 9 euros a head! Do I hear the stampede of tiny feet???

Delightful, peaceful caravan and camping site. Not cheap - about 28 Euro per night for us.

Very large open pitches, some in shade, some open, a few on slight slopes. Electricity 3 or 6amp.

Fabulous shower block - clean, new, ranch style, very hot water with excellent water pressure.

Site full of trees and woodland. Less than an hour from Santander. Well placed for cycling and visiting places in Cantabria like the nearby villages and towns, the city of Santander itself, caves, etc.

Kids there seemed to be enjoying play area in a glade. No swimming pool or other commercial facilities.

Lovely cafe / restaurant at reception area open until midnight where there is FREEE wi-fi!

NB quite a narrow approach road - very wide or long caravans or motorhomes might struggle to get through.

Reception staff very helpful although speak no english.

We got no satellite reception probably due to surrounding hills.

Really enjoyed our stay after we had left a busy unpleasant commercial site.
