Yet another nice stay at Woodland Springs, as ever Chris and Jan were the perfect hosts. They have improved the site even more since our last visit, the line of hard standings are now covered in a nice white stone instead of the original grey stuff and they have added some more hard standings.

As always the facility block here is 5 star and is always kept spotless.

I can assure Chris and Jan that we will certainly be back for even more of their wonderful hospitality.

I just cannot find anything to fault this site on, just a piece of heaven where one can go for some real peace and serenity. Long may it continue.

This is one of the best sites we have stayed on. We can only agree with all the good points that people have raised, particularly the shower block - brilliant!

The freshly baked bread every morning is a treat and if you go up the road to the local farm, you can buy fresh Devon clotted cream (pay in the honesty box) to accompany the scones bought on site. You can buy local jam in the site shop and make your own Devon Cream Tea and eat it at one of the picnic tables dotted about the site.

Chris and Jan are lovely people and are justifiably proud of the site. They have obviously worked very hard to bring it up to it's present standard and any rules are perfectly reasonable; certainly no different from any other Adult Only site we have stayed on and less than some.

Chris spent nearly the whole of our first Sunday on site (in the pouring rain) setting up our satellite dish and downloading the channels to the box on his computer. He missed most of the Grand Prix to help us and, when we thanked him, said it was 'just part of the service'.

Our two large dogs were made very welcome. The site is dog-friendly and there is a good exercise area not far from the site which is mowed regularly.

The site is very easy to find and yet you feel as if you are miles from anywhere. The drive from the road is banked by hedgerows full of wild flowers and we had a lovely, large pitch in a corner with a stream running around the edge.

The nearest village, Chagford, is charming with pretty shops and has a superb butcher, dairy and deli.

All in all, we had a great time, plenty of places to visit, plenty of days out, but the temptation to just stay on the site and 'chill' was great. Can't recommend too highly and we certainly hope to return this year.

We very much enjoyed our stay on this site. I liked the hardstanding with bushes on both sides for extra privacy.

Pitch only had electric hook up, but there was a tap nearby, and only a short walk to the toilet block which has an impressive recycling area outside as well as the chemical point.

Toilet block was excellent, new and very clean. My only criticism is push button showers which only give you about 20 seconds.

Excellent access to Dartmoor, and not far from the A30 so very easy to get to. Nowhere to eat within easy walking distance, but the Post Inn at Whiddon Down is a few minutes drive away and is very good.

We would definitely stay here again if we are in this area.

Excellent site, very quiet, clean and adults only. Nicely spaced out pitches and a fantastic washroom block, looked newly built and very clean as others have said. There was also one 'self contained' bathroom in the gents (i assume the ladies also). I wish more sites did this! Although we didn't use it, I've never seen a washing up area for campers so immaculate! There is even an ironing board and iron. They also bake fresh bread each morning which you can order the night before. Would highly recommend and wouldn't hesitate to book again.

We have just returned from three nights at Woodland Springs, during some of the most impractical weather for camping - two days of constant torrential rain, gale force winds and severe weather warnings - but were our spirits dampened? Not at all!

The park itself is very easy to find, just off of the A30 at Whiddon Down, despite its close proximity to this arterial route, you still feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, enhanced at night with the only sounds being of nature and the ambient light being very low.

As you drive down the lane approaching the site, you immediately get a good feeling, the trees and planting are very attractive and the pitches are of a good size with plenty of room around them.

After booking in, we were guided to pitch 77. This is a slightly sloping grass pitch that is surrounded by hedging and trees, it offers excellent privacy and screening from the wind. The pitch also benefitted from a 16 amp electric hook-up and a fresh water tap. There was plenty of space on the pitch for our tent (5m x 3.2m) and our car behind and we still had plenty of room to move around and sit out. Looking around the site, I think the majority of the grass pitches are flat and electric hookups and water are never far away.

The shower/toilet block has recently been built and is of the highest quality that we have have ever seen on a site. The block is a beautifully finished timber cabin with ladies and gents shower/toilets plus two unisex disabled facilities that have toilet, handbasin and wet-room style shower. To the rear of the block there is an indoor washing up/laundry room, that has more than enough space and sinks to cover the site even when fully booked.

In each of the ladies/gents facilities there are two shower cubicles and five or six toilets (cant remember exactly), a similar number of handbasins and also a “suite” cubicle, that has shower, toilet and basin all in one convenient room.

Not once did we have to queue to use the facilities and they were always clean with plenty of toilet paper/hand towels available. The showers are of the push-button type giving about 20 seconds per push, the water was always hot and of good pressure.

There is an information point adjacent to the showers, in here you can find out lots of information on what to do and where to go, utilise a freezer and enjoy a fresh coffee from the machine.

The reception/shop is quite small and only carries essentials (I include ice-cream as an essential!) You can also purchase access to their Wi-Fi network giving you broadband internet access across the park. We used this for two days and I was quite surprised on how good the connection speed was, we were able to comfortably watch programmes on the BBC iPlayer service without any interruption.

The access to Dartmoor is very quick, although there are a lot of single track areas, so not ideal if you are in a Motor Home. Shopping is quite easy, we opted to pop into Okehampton (about 8 miles away, along the A30) where you have a choice of Somerfield, Waitrose and Lidl. There is also an Esso service station just up the road from the site which is very useful for the little essentials.

Jan and Chris very obviously take a great deal of pride in Woodland Springs, they work extremely hard to not only maintain the park, but also to develop and improve it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on this site, despite the deplorable weather doing its best to ruin our stay. We would both very much like to return to this site and hopefully enjoy some better weather.

The campsite is quite small and pretty; very lush and green after the rains, with lots of trees. There is an information hut with leaflets and a coffee machine (with great coffee) and a freezer for ice packs. The pitches are much closer together than we are used to. The shop is well stocked with most necessities and not overly expensive for a campsite shop.

The shower and toilet block and washing up area is new and attractive and well stocked with all necessities. Watch out as the showers flood out from under the stalls and you have to sweep it back in with a squeegee afterwards. A notice was put up on the wall during our stay reminding campers to clean up after themselves (one of several ‘Polite Notices’ telling campers ‘Do Not’ and ‘You Must’ which appear everywhere). The two owners are going nonstop and do everything themselves – they keep shop, sort through the campsite’s rubbish, rake the ground, clean the toilet block whenever they can, and yet they still make the time to pop over to remind you exactly how You Must Position Your Vehicle In Accordance with The Site Rules. Fantastic.

The site is on a fast country road not really suitable for walking along, but places to walk a short distance away are easily accessible by car. We walked around two reservoirs on the two full days we were in Dartmoor, Meldon reservoir and Fernworthy reservoir – beautiful sites, with the circular Meldon reservoir walk being the longer walk of the two. Fernworthy reservoir is spectacular, an old-fashioned dam with rippling falls on the other side of the dam which are well worth seeing – we also spotted Dartmoor ponies on the walk. Chagford, on the way to Fernworthy, is a pretty village with several camping supplies shops and there is a public car park tucked away at the back of the village. Okehampton (which we drove through on the way to Meldon reservoir) is very congested and there are long tailbacks to get to the town centre. We didn’t stop in the town as it was en route to our destination.

Back to the campsite, which is silent at 11pm: that means silent - not quiet. You can hear a pin drop – or the A30 if the wind is in the wrong direction. At 11.15pm on the first night we were warned by one of the owners to be silent as our group were talking quietly together in our tent. We were in bed by 11pm on successive nights!

You are not allowed to use disposable barbecues but you can hire barbecues on stands from the camp shop for £1 a night with a deposit of ten pounds. Dogs are allowed but, unlike other sites we’ve stayed on, there seem to be no restrictions as to breeds of dogs.

The real downside – and it is a huge one – is that there is a drainage problem on this site and many of the pitches flooded (the owners didn’t ring beforehand to warn us the pitches are flooded but, in our case - and we booked a couple of weeks beforehand - wait for you to arrive, apologise, assure you “it’ll be dried out by tomorrow” - and leave you to sort it out). We pitched unevenly on a slope, as the bottom of the pitch was flooded where the level ground was. We would of course have gone elsewhere had we known beforehand just how bad the pitches were – but where do you go when you arrive at the height of the summer season? And please note: NO refunds are given. It states this in the rules (read through carefully – there are a lot of rules…). Caveat emptor.

We’d noticed several times during our stay that we were 'under observation', which made us feel slightly uncomfortable.

Our second visit and our last. Pitches are very small (we spoke to several others on the site who felt the same)

Lots of 'Don't Dos' we are all adults after all!

The pub in walking distance - well the 200m we were told without a footpath is actually half a mile, which no one in their right mind would chance along that road (just wide enough for 2 cars to pass)

Make sure you take a torch if you need to use any facilities after dark.

Why no auto barrier ?- adults only on lock down between 11pm & 7. 30am - didn't even make my kids go through that in their worst nightmares!

Dog exercise area is good - no evidence of the lazy people!

There was a strong feeling of the 'money' side being of greater importance than the comfort of guests - reduce the site by about 15 pitches & it would be much nicer.

Lots of caravans on there appear to be 'storage' or weekend use only which made the site feel quite impersonal.

Didn't really use the facilities much as only there for 3 days but told always queues for ladies showers in the mornings.

My partner and I have just returned from an overnight stay at Woodland Springs Camp Site. The site itself was immaculate, including the facilities, which were more than adequate and very clean.

We took a disposable BBQ but were not allowed to use it so instead hired one for £1 (£10 deposit). It appeared to have been unused and so took much scrubbing and cleaning to return it in a 'clean' condition to ensure the return of our £10.

The many rules and regulations of the site while possibly being understandable give an unwelcoming air.

Our second time at Woodland Springs, we spent a total of 8 weeks here last year, and have really enjoyed ourselves again.

The new facility block is really brilliant and now that Chris 'owner' has redone the pipework the reported problem with water flow when all the showers are in use is now cured.

I used the WiFi sytem as we were here for a few weeks and can only say that the previous reported problems must have been fixed now as I had good service the whole time and at a really good speed and the cost is lower than that charged on C&CC sites.

Where hosts/owners are concerned Chris and Jan are in a league of their own and are only matched so far by the owners of two other sites that we have used, they are so friendly and helpful it is a joy to stay here.

With regards to the hardstanding pitches, yes they are large chippings but we have no problem with that as if sites use the fine beach pebble topping it can be difficult to get the van to roll onto the pitch, also with the pegging out once again no problem here as we are prepared for all surfaces and use 8' T-Bar pegs that will go into 90% of surfaces that we have pitched on add to this a small 'club hammer' and all is easy. Plus of course they do sell 'Rock Pegs' in the site shop.

There is plenty to do and see around and we could continue our hobby of Geocaching as there are plenty hidden within a few miles.

All in all yet another splendid stay and we have decided to return in September 'now already booked' and can happily recommend the site to others seeking that bit of peace and quite.

Lovely site, most pitches are gravel with grass on either side but there are some that are just gravel and the tent area mainly in the middle near the toilet block. The toilet block is a brand new wooden chalet style block consisting of two separate disabled bathrooms. Both the mens and ladies have two showers and one which has a shower, toilet and sink in it. When two or three are in use at the same time the water pressure turns to a trickle and as they are push controlled anyway it is quite a task. Plenty of toilets though.

The dog field is ample but a shame some people cannot pick up after their pets. Day kennels are available for a fee but are really only suitable for smaller dogs as they are not very large or maybe for an hour or two at the most. Also be aware, I paid for a weeks wifi (cost £20 or £4 per day) only to find out that it was not working in the area we were pitched. After reporting this problem it took 3 days before I could actually use it properly other than sitting outside the office in our vehicle for 2 mins as this antenna worked. The internet company realizing it was a problem their end extended my use but not much good as I was only there for the week, when I approached one of the site owners for a partial refund I was refused

The area as a whole is beautiful, the walk from Sandy Park along the river to Fingle Bridge is great and the pub, it's staff and food are excellent. Chagford has everything you will need and we can highly recommend the Butchers. All of the people in the villages are friendly and helpful especially the two ladies working in the service station at Whiddon Down which sells everything you could need at very good prices, good selection of wine and beer.
