 I have already written an extensive review about my stay in August 2009.
I have just returned from our Easter trip back here and am commenting on the improvements Mark and Sally have made over the winter!
This site is now in my opinion as perfect as sites get!
Mark and Sally have invested in a new toilet block. This is of an extremely high standard and far superior to any other site I have stayed on.
There are now single sex toilets in the porta cabin, and even on the busy bank holiday weekend, when the site was fully booked I never had to queue, and there was always loo roll!
The toilets are now more centrally located, next to the showers (much better) and there is not a smelly composting loo in the middle of the site (it has been moved further down near the end field so people staying at that end don't have to walk miles to the toilet!)
The showers now seem to be hot, all the time (not running hot cold!) so that issue has been solved, and there is now a proper blind in the males, and a cover round the girls door so it is NOT possible to watch the people changing any more! Well Done Mark and Sally.
All the hot water is free and although the washing up sink still only has cold water the water in the toilets is hot enough to easily get a bowl of hot washing up water!
They have a few new animals (ducks) and more animals on the way apparently.
There is also a shed by the entrance with lots of leaflets and local information (including local pub menu, map etc) as well as a library of books and magazines that campers are welcome to borrow during their stay! Another great addition to this lovely site!
We were there on a very wet weekend, where other local sites had to close due to the extreme rain, yet longthorns remained really quite dry, and within hours of the rain stopping the puddles had gone completely!
What was nearly a perfect site in August 2009 has in my opinion become a pretty perfect site in 2010!
And at £12 per tent per night (inc 2 adults and 2 children, cars etc!) even in peak season is very good value!
Mark and Sally still plan to improve it further though. Next aim is a communal under cover area so that when it rains and pours there will be somewhere dry to have a Barbecue!
I can not recommend this site enough! If you want to camp in Dorset then I suggest here is the place to stay!

This is a fantastic site. Our week was a bit marred by the weather (tail end of hurricane bill!) but it didn't make any difference. Mark and Sally couldn't have been more helpful, they didn't overbook for the bank holiday weekend and there was loads of room. They have a great tipi field and 4 further fields and it was great. There 'respect your fellow campers' policy works wonders and yes you get a few tank noises and helicopter looking like they are going to land on you but to us it was exciting and something different from the norm. We loved it here and will definitely be going back. The facilities are gradually being upgraded but to be fair the showers were hot and the muddy floor unfortunately is down to all of the campers there, yes all of us not to mark and sally. The eco loos are really not that bad and gives you a sense of satisfaction that you are doing your bit. There are bins and bags for recycling at every field so no excuses there. A great base for loads of activities and the honesty shop was a godsend, brilliant idea. You can even label your food and ice packs and leave then in one of the 2 fridge/freezers to make life very easy.
So suffice to say that we really enjoyed it!

Great well kept campsite and seems to drain really well even after sudden down pours! Fantastic owners and great fire pits (remember to book one!) Great spaces for playing cricket and the kids loved walks in the woods and cycling about. The well stocked honesty shop was perfect (milk and local sausages plus fire lighters etc). Some fool decided to stop on the main road in the night and walk over and stole the small amount of money so they now keep the cash box very low so you'll need change! The road is a nearby and fast so warn the kids to stay away. There are 2 loos on main site (which never run low on loo roll and more composting loos in other fields) and a cold shower. They built a ladies 2 shower and gents 2 shower when we were there (we were first to use them!). My only advice to them is to get a header tank as the showers turn hot to cold when taps get turned on! The showers are domestic size and there's not a lot of privacy to get changed so take a big towel! They also have a basket of leaflets and I think in time they should put up an ordinence survey map pinpointing local amenities and places to visit as this is great if you are new to the area!
You are next to the tank military area and they do go all night sometimes (exciting but noisy when tanks are close). Monkey world is less than 5 mins walking via a field! You hear the monkeys which is very exotic!
Lulworth cove and castle is 15 mins and the tank museum is nearby and local shops a short drive away as were a laundrette and lots of great pubs.
I'd strongly recommend this campsite as it really was fun and exciting (with the tanks). These are new owners and they are keen to make improvements as they grow!

We stayed here in August 2009 and really loved the relaxed family-friendly atmosphere Mark & Sally were aiming to provide. Our 9 year old son really enjoyed himself feeding the sheep and other animals with Sally as well as playing all sorts of games on the open area in the middle of the EHU field. The fire-pit hire is a truly inspirational idea and we ended up BBQ-ing on it for tea and then burning logs afterwards, well into the evening. Blissful on a still, star-filled night!
Pleased to hear of the improvements Mark & Sally have made to the site since we visited, as the loo/shower facilities did not truly match the otherwise high standard of customer service and hospitality that we received. Get that bit right and this site will be difficult to beat, not just in Dorset, but anywhere! We hope to pay a return visit next time we're down that way.

I stayed here for 5 night in August including the bank holiday weekend!
What can I say. This site is so nearly perfect.
Mark & Sally are lovely. So kind genuine and helpful. We arrived in a gale and my tent pole snapped as we tried to erect the tent. I had a spare pole on the car but no hacksaw, so Mark very kindly had a saw and not only 'let us borrow it' but actually cut it to the correct length and rethreaded the poles etc himself (getting a nasty carbon fibre splinter in the process). Nothing was too much trouble and I cant thank him enough!
The site basically has 3 main fields, the first has electric points, facilities and honesty shop and the other 2 fields are for tents, the tipi's are in the far field. There are also fields of sheep and lambs and horses, and the lambs graze the site and are very cute!
The honesty shop is fantastic, selling EVERY thing you might need camping. They have actually thought about it and, for example you can buy fire lighters individually for a few p rather than a whole box, great when you need just one or two!. You can buy most basic essentials (including cork screw and tin opener!) and a selection of other local yummy products, such as jam etc.
As well as the honesty shop they have an 'order form with next day delivery to your tent' service. All sorts of delicious fresh local meat / sausages can be ordered (prices start at 38p for a seriously yummy home made sausage!)
You can also order pretty much anything before you arrive on their website. They have a local farm shop so pretty much anything at all (meat, fruit, veg, dairy etc) can be pre-booked to be delivered to your tent upon arrival. We made use of this service and it was great. Things arrive in a polystyrene cool box so will keep properly cold for a day!
We hired a fire pit with charcoal and grill (delivered to tent) which made a fab BBQ, as well as camp-fire for toasting marshmallows!
On the bank holiday weekend the site was fully booked, but we all had loads and loads of space. I counted about 22 units in the 'electric' field and at least 10 or more tents in each of the enormous fields, but there was so much space, and we were not 'crammed' in at all.
Saying that the facilities on this site arnt the best. (i would say that everything else IS the best though!) There are just 2 (unisex) flushing toilets, one of which kept blocking, and the other only blocked when some silly person decided to flush an entire toilet roll, tube and all down the toilet. This was quite inconvenient but really not the fault of Mark & Sally! The toilets were cleaned and well stocked daily, though supplies were running very low in the early morning.
As well as these conventional toilets there was a male and female composting toilet. Other people have said that they didn't smell, but by the end of Augast really they most certainly did smell. We avoided using them when possible, which was unfortunate as I have experienced composting toilets that don't smell nearly so bad.
As for the showers, they are in a new porta cabin. 2 each for male and female. Essentially there are 2 small (beautifully clean) shower cubical s with a curtain to keep the water in the tray, but NO WHERE private to dress undress. Not only that but the door opens directly opposite the showers themselves, so if someone opens the door then you get a full view of the girls changing! The boys are slightly better designed, so they arnt so visible if their door is open BUT the window is right by the steps to the girls door, and there is a window right there, which although there is a blind, you can still see through and see the men changing!
An extra curtained area would easily resolve this issue! I suggest if you are particularly shy take your swim suit and wear that in the shower and dress in you tent!
I had a shower in the afternoon, when I was the only person on the whole site showering. It was hot, powerful enough and nice. On the busy mornings when both showers were in constant use I have been informed that they kept going freezing / boiling etc making the shower experience most unpleasant, so peoples showers took much longer and the queues got even longer than they might have been! Its such a shame to write this, as its clear lots of effort has been made to make a clean and pleasant shower block.
On the busy weekend there really were not enough showers or toilets.
It seems that the owners are aware of the problem and are trying to resolve it!
There is an (enormous) washing up sink to use. It only has cold water, but it seemed common practice to get hot water from the showers and use that to wash up.
There are also 2 fridge freezers. One contains the chilled items for the honesty shop, and the other is for sole use of people on the site. This is great and we made full use of this and even enjoyed (local purbeck) ice cream while camping which is a first! (don't forget to take a marker pen to write your name on your food / ice blocks)
There is also some badminton nets / rackets that are available to borrow.
The site is quite quiet though you can hear the monkeys being literally next door to monkey world. You also hear a few tanks and tractors going along the road but on the whole it is a quite peaceful place to be in.
Its lovely having the animals about. Lots of left over food items can be hand fed to the sheep, and recycling is actively encouraged. Dogs are clearly welcome. Not sure if they have to be on leads or not, many were not but they were all friendly and under control so I don't think it mattered anyway!
Essentially despite the smelly toilets this is one of the nicest sites I have ever stayed on. The owners couldn't be nicer and at £10 per tent per night (including 2 adults & 2 children) in high season was very good value. There is SO much to do in the surrounding area, and the honesty shop / fridge freezer etc gives the site an even nicer feel. Its lovely to be have the animals around and listen to the monkeys, and then have a camp fire in the evening.
We most definitely plan to return, hopefully there might be more toilets next time though!

Spent a lovely week here in august, fire pits and honesty shop are great. Very chilled laid back site and the owners are very friendly. We had an extra large pitch and there was plenty of room and big field for kids to play on. Couple of times I saw people waiting for showers in morning but this didn't bother us and we left showering till afternoon/ evening and never had to wait.

Spent 3 nights here in mid August and was happy with the site. Mark and Sally are so helpful and friendly - they came round in the morning and the evening to chat and check all was OK. If I had any criticism to make it would be that the toilets and showers are not up to the same standards as some sites but perhaps this is reflected in the price?. It was very busy weekend - the busiest they have ever been - and it showed. I would recommend booking a fire pit - we missed out but they looked great. I loved the honesty shop and the small cosy feeling of the site. I hope they keep it small and don't get too big. Would go back again as long as the showers are improved.

For a first family camping holiday we couldn't have chosen a better site. Mark and Sally are hard working and honest people who have set up a fantastic family orientated site.My girls loved feeding the lambs, putting money into the honesty box and watching gliders overhead and tanks rolling down the road.
The facilities were good, plenty of cheese and milk and honesty shop always well stocked. The showers were adequite but busy after 8 am, fine for the early birds!. Unisex toilets were clean, constantly full of toilet paper and hand wash. There are more on the way. The fire pit was worth every penny! It is so good we intend to return next holiday. Highly recommend anytime. Hopefully it will stay the way it is and remain family friendly.

We really liked this campsite. The weather wasn't always great but site didn't get muddy. It felt how camping should be and that the owners have created the sort of authentic camping experience they like. We liked the fact we could have a fire. There were lots of families so my daughter was happy, lots for the children to explore on site including the den in the forest and the horses to feed. The honesty shop was a lovely touch and hope everyone respected this! There's a compost toilet which because of my green ethics I thought was a good thing. It is cleaned everyday but some people may find it a bit difficult despite this. Showered worked OK, but found it difficult to adjust the temperature without water going cold. Showers were new so maybe this is teething problems. Didn't put me of the campsite though.
Dorset is lovely. We explored quite a lot. The coastal walks are beautiful with some lovely views. When the sun shone it was like a little bit of heaven. When the rain came, we mostly enjoyed the lovely internet cafe in wareham which was very friendly with comfy sofas.

This is my fav site! So relaxed, but not chaotic. Very friendly hosts, Sally and Mark are great not interfering and the site is well run.
The Honesty shop is the icing on the cake. If you're early risers the shop is open.Ready to get milk or bacon etc for breakfast. Like wise if you're not up till late the shop is still open! No having to get up in time for the opening hours.
Children had plenty of space to play football and ride bikes. They loved the lambs and horses too.
The toilets did get very busy at the weekend, but I believe there are more planned for next year. They are well kept. The showers are good too. Just no where private to get re-dressed except the shower tray. But we just wrapped up and went back to the tent.
Heard the tanks pass and the monkeys howl, but not enough to disturb us at all.
Really well placed as between Weymouth, Swanage and Poole. So much to do in the area Corfe castle and Brownsea Island are great. Bowleaze cove has good value children's fair rides.
Great place, we will return.Hopefully there will still be enough space!
