Wonderful is how I describe Longthorn Farm. The owners were extremely helpful. The honest shop and fridge/freezer is perfect and means you never had to go without necessities. We all loved having the real campfire and BBQ in the evenings and waking up to the sound of the howler monkeys from nearby Monkey World was an amazing experience.
We also tried to walk the woodland walk but got very lost and had to turn back! Lol! Worth asking the owners for a map as we weren't the only ones to get lost and we all possibly were tresspassing where we weren't supposed to! However, we saw the deer and lots of squirrels and rabbits so that went down well with our 4 and 6 yr olds.
There are also resident sheep and horses which the children loved!
There was only one shower but this was the best shower I have ever been in in a campsite (possibly even better than mine at home!) - apart from when someone else uses the water in the sinks and it goes red hot - but that was a minor issue especially if you shower at non-busy times as I did.
They were just finishing off new showers while we were there so that will help a great deal.
The toilets were fine but I felt a tad self conscious as they were mixed gender. So often found myself 'holding on' until we got to our daily place of interest rather than going on site. Not sure why it bothered me - but it did. But the actual standard of the loos were fine.
There were also some compost toilets near to the tipis but after one inspection I decided there were no chance of me using them! But again, its a personal choice and I'm sure some people would be fine with them. As far as I am aware, they were very clean.
Will we go back? Most definitely!

We had a great stay at the Longthorns site. It's run by a nice and friendly couple who even took the time to come and say hello and to see how we were doing and if we needed anything.
Hiring a firepit is a must as you can cook your dinner on it and keep warm around it while enjoying a beer or two in the evening.
Facilities included showers and toilets and an honesty shop. There's also horses and sheep in the fields next to the site which is good for keeping the children amused.
It's in a great location for seeing some of Dorsets best sights.
The prices were very reasonable too, it worked out much cheaper than other campsites we looked at in the area.
I would recommend a stay here to anyone!

We stayed as a group in the teepees - fantastic! Loved the covered cooking stations provided in this field and the big BBQ and firepits. Our teepee leaked after the first night but new bedding provided by the lovely friendly owners did the trick. Best composting toilets we've used too!
Only one hot shower in the ladies though and more hooks in the showers and small shelves in sink areas would be appreciated to help prevent soggy washbags.

Well I have just returned from my 3rd visit here in as many months, and I only live 50 odd miles away!
This is a wonderful site, with a true camping feel. It is not overly complicated with attractions to keep you on site. The centre of the field is kept clear of pitches to give the children somewhere to play and this works well for all concerned.
Longthorns is camping at it's best, a truly friendly couple prepared to share their land with a privileged few at a time! ;0) My favourite thing is the Honesty Shop. Sally takes great care to ensure that it caters for your every need / short fall. This is pretty impressive when it's only 4 foot long! In today's world is nice to see that trust is alive and kicking.
It provides an excellent base from which to explore all that East Dorset has to offer. If you like your military hardware you'll enjoy watching the learner tanks passing by, or perhaps the odd exercise overhead. The gliders are amazing to watch as they land in a near by field and the access to Monkey World , from the bottom of the field, is an added bonus.
In short if you want a proper camping experience, complete with Campfire - Longthorns is for you. However, if you want an all inclusive pitch up and hope the kids entertain themselves I suggest you find somewhere more commercial.

Lovely site, with a field at the bottom of the hill and then up a path to another huge field where the teepees are, stunning up there.
It is very laid back for the dogs too, as long as you have common sense, the dogs were allowed to be off lead and they loved it.
Toilets were a little dated / tired (portable cabin), but I think they were building more, Only one washing up sink outside which more often than not was blocked with fat, as there was only cold water available.
The owners are lovely but were a little pre-occupied with a film crew, which was unfortunate for us campers as toilets weren't cleaned as often as they should be.
Great location for Monkey World and Tank Museum, also Wareham and the Purbeck Hills.
Would go back, if they have new loos now.

Facilities are ample for the amount of people/units that were present this weekend. May be a little stretched in high season when full, but Mark is building more, so we think it will be fine. Lovely big open area for games, all welcome to join in, relaxed atmosphere from owners is absorbed through the site and makes for a very chilled atmosphere - perfect get away from hustle and bustle of life! Monkey world is fabulous and less than 5 mins walk across field. Lots of super local pubs, serving excellent value food to suit all tastes. Easy access to lots of local attractions / facilities / entertainment. I am not sure there is a need to criticise anything. Honesty shop is a fab touch, as are the tame chickens. We fully intend to return frequently with the caravan or in tents. Tepees look great. In summary, if you need to chill out, be relaxed and have a quiet evening or 3 doing as much or as little as you please with no hassles from site owners, this is the place for you.

What a great campsite - spent 3 nights there over the BH weekend. To be honest it could have done with a few more showers but that did not get in the way (and the owners are rectifying). The honesty shop was a great touch - just hope everyone remembers to be honest!
The owners are excellent - very friendly and helpful. As soon as we get the chance we'll be going back.

Lovely peaceful atmosphere and well situated if you are looking to explore the Dorset coast. Also, very close to Monkey World - we could hear the monkeys!
Great owners, very friendly and welcoming. And the facilities were more than adequate. The honesty shop was a particularly nice touch.
A great weekend, we will be going back

Have just come back from a great camping holiday at Longthorns. Stayed for 4 nights, owners welcomed us on arrival. Our pitch was quite near a caravan with a noisy generator, we asked to move, which wasn't a problem. As others have mentioned site had 2 sets of loos, 2 flushing ones in a block by entrance and 2 compost loos in the second field. Compost loos weren't a problem - 5 year old enjoyed the novetly of using them! The firepits can be hired for about £15 including fuel - handmade by the owner of the site. Excellent for cooking on, and really handy for keeping warm during the cold evenings.
Campsite is next to a field used for gliders, and a lot of the area is used for milatray training - my 5 year old enjoyed watching the gliders and looking out for tanks!
As mentioned by others there's an honesty shop on site selling bread, milk etc - very useful if you have forgotten something or have run out of provisions as there aren't huge amounts of local shops. Think the site are now offering a food ordering service which you can use prior to your stay.
So much to do in the area, would have loved to have stayed for longer. Will certainly be coming back to this site.

I am not going to go into a long list of facilities and local attractions as others have already done a good job of that.
Instead I offer my humble opinion on the camping experience at Longthorns Farm.
We arrived late at night and were pleased that the site was well signposted and easy to find from the road. Because we were late arrivals, Mark & Sally weren't around to welcome us at first and we were surprised by the laid back approach, with other campers just advising us to grab a pitch and sort it out in the morning.
This was a welcome change to some of the other places we have camped, where you are met with a demand for payment and list of things you are not allowed to do. There was no such goings on, and Mark & Sally simply paid a nightly visit to all campers, drink in hand.
The facilities are basic, but sufficient. If you want a large shop, playground and a full shower block this isn't for you. But if you want a close to nature, environmentally friendly camping experience, this is great.
The site was busy, but not over crowded. Mark offers handmade fire pits for BBQ'ing, which we were impressed to see he knocked up on site in an afternoon. We had a few visitors and everyone was impressed with these.
Excellent value for money, hassle free, left to your own devices, friendly hosts, beautiful countryside. Highly recommended.
