Just back from a 4 night stay, complete with high winds, rain, freezing temperature and some sun. Yet we still really enjoyed ourselves.
This was our 5th visit in the last 4 years since our daughter was born and I have been numerous times before this. The place is fantastic for people of all ages, especially the kids who can run free playing football etc on the fields or exploring around the sand dunes.
In the last year, the Shell Island owners have started replacing the portable loos with static toilet blocks which have certainly improved the toilet facilities. A down side is the shower block which seems will never receive any improvements.
Another downside is some of the 'Shameless' campers who will refuse to use the bins and are content with dumping there waste wherever they stand.
Great beaches, great pitching locations (anywhere you want), friendly staff, patrolling wardens, campfires and friendly campers.
All in all, I love this place come wind or shine and will be coming back year after year (starting with my Mom's 60th birthday celebration in June :) ).

Went to this site on the recommendation of a friend. The site is absolutely massive with a mixture of pitches available from camping in the sand dunes or in one of the several large fields. Although the weather was not at its best it is a beautiful area. The toilets and showers were acceptable and the on site shop seemed to be well stocked, we didn't try the cooked food on site or go in the club house. We did try the pub in the nearby village (about 2 minutes away over the causeway and left over the bridge) which was really nice with good food of reasonable price. It is unfortunate that our experience was tainted by the fact that whilst we were away for the first time in over 20 years of camping our pitch was raided by someone and several things were stolen. For that reason alone we would not visit again.

Shell Island has it all. Great supermarket with everything you would need for a lengthy stay, plus a cafe for those who don't want to cook. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all served with a doorway into a fully stocked bar (with off licence sales as well).
Opposite this complex is a fully stocked camp shop for all those things you left at home ie. yent pegs, charcoal, gas, in fact everything an outdoor supplies shop should stock.
There are plenty of toilets and showers in a central location to the island with chemical toilets situated around the site at peak times.
Open fires (must be raised off the ground) are allowed, so great to sit out at night with a drink in the hand whilst your jacket potato cooks on your fire.
Nice little play area for the children was recently built which can be viewed from one of the outdoor tables outside the bar
Booking is now available on-line for a small number of persons. The rest is turn up and check in (at busy times, this site will be full and you may be turned away.
Don't forget your fishing rods as great fishing from the harbour or from the long beach.

Me and my dad went with my 22 month old daughter and she absolutely loved it. The weather wasn't bad at all even though it rained at night a little bit (it was forecast to be a lot worse) We camped in a lovely part where we were surrounded by trees and were quite sheltered from the wind as well. We were quite low down and tucked away a bit as we were a bit concerned about the weather but it was lovely where we were. The staff at reception are friendly and chatty, the little shop has everything you need and the toilet/shower facilities were absolutely immaculate. There is also a lovely little park for those of you with children situated on site as part of the pub. Will definitely be going again next year.

Fantastic time! lots of places to choose to pitch up our tent so we could stay away from the parties if wanted to. Would go here again
Good points
Did not really need to spend any money to entertain the kids as the beach is close by with sand dunes and seen as the weather was lovely that is all we did.
Can pick own pitch
Portaloos not that far away
Other points.
Some people don't keep their pitch tidy so when they leave and don't take their litter it does not look very pleasant, however the staff clear this up
Showers quite far away from our pitch but we decided to pitch up where we did.
Shop is expensive
Cash machine takes forever to dispense cash, I waited 15 minutes from entering my pin!

I am writing this retrospectively. I didn't realise you could write more than one review of the same site, but as my views have changed quite a bit from my previous review on this site, I thought it was important to jot down my opinions.
As ever, the site itself is amazing, just as it always was, the sand dunes are to die for, the beaches are truly stunning, even the staff are the same from previous years, the shops are as always, quaint & stock everything and very reasonable too - but, these are my bugbears:
(1) the showers are in a terrible, dirty, unkempt state. Again, I don't blame the staff, they are impossible to keep on top of due to the sheer volume of people using them. No idea what the ratio of showers to people is - better off not knowing, they really need to address this issue and build another block somewhere!
(2) The loos are just as shocking :( I can't bring myself to describe the, - think festival :(
(3) The club was DISGUSTING, we've never been one to frequent the club, just not our scene but on my last trip, for some reason, we went on several occasions with the kids, I think it was due to the fact that the weather was so awful, wet & windy that it kept us dry and warm for a bit. There was food all over the floor, sticky carpets, kids out of control everywhere, my idea of a nightmare :( They need to get their act together.
But if you can ignore the showers/toilets/club and smell a bit! then everything else is perfect :) :) :)

We had pre booked via the internet for a four night stay in our tent. Arrived at 5pm on the Saturday. Able to pitch where ever you like on the site. The portable toilet block closest to our pitch was usable for the ladies but the gents was swimming in water and not clean.
The zero tolerance to noise was not in evidence as there was singing and shouting into the small hours with abusive language. The management gave us a full refund and we left as soon as possible on the Sunday morning. Place is great for young teenagers/ groups of single sex or people without very young children. Great location but facilities bit shabby and need a whole revamp and a large injection of capital to improve.
Barmouth a short drive away with plenty of shops, pubs and a supermarket.

This was our second visit, went last year and had a good week. This time had problems we had bought a new Outwell montana and I was glad as the winds were bad and many tents were breaking up. Just a note we were on the fields to the right of the entrance near the harbour and the ground was solid and had stones under so we had to buy whole set of new tent pegs(thin metal) rather than the outwell pegs.
We went out one day and came back to find door window ripped and holes in it, called security who said they were BB gun pellets and advised us they have had problems with shops in Barmouth selling high powered BB guns but did say if they found anyone on site with one they would throw them off. Security was really helpful and when one group brought out big speakers that boomed arcoss the fields they were on top of it straight away.
The queue for the showers was long again but they were clean if possible take showers late to avoid the queues. We took the dog for the first time and it is great that all the beaches are dog friendly with dog waste bins on all the paths to beach and people did clear up.
Try the butchers in Llanbedre best BBQ meat ever.

Had a great time here. Long relaxing walks and very peaceful. Beaches were clean and after a short walk very quiet.
Yes there were queues at the shower block and they were a little tired but functional. The site staff were cleaning them regularly. The only downside was the people using them didn't leave them in a clean state after them.
The on site shop had plenty of choice and was priced similarly to a corner shop like you would find at home.
Take your time to explore the site before choosing your pitch. There are plenty of quiet areas
The site staff were pleasant and chatty. The checkin process was relatively painless and quick

Shell island is a fabulous place, the beaches are excellent for children, the rock pools have loads of things to find and crabbing by the tidal road is so easy. The kids love the dunes and miles of sand.
The campsite is absolutely huge.
There are shops where you can buy everything you will ever need.
However our stay was marred by the incessant boom boom boom of music from loads of different campers fuelled by alcohol who have no respect for other peoples comfort and family life. When the music went on and on we had to call security and they did come but what a pain.
Also there are not enough toilets, the portaloos were cleaned every day but were still disgusting. One shower block for the whole campsite is not enough!
If the management could make half the island amplified music free so campers could choose to have a party or to just chill out then it would be better.
