We have just returned from 5 days at thorntons holt. The site is overall very much worth a visit clean and tidy (litter pickers walking around everyday we where there) the pitches large and mostly level, we stayed at the paddock field and the whole field was well spaced out with mostly families on it.
Other comments are correct the shower block does need updating (with plans in place for a new one)and the kids play area could do with a freshen up, it was supposed to be under 12's but there was older kids running around (maybe an older play area for over 12's ?)
Cracking pub only 2mins walk outside the gates they do allow dogs in the beer garden which is great on a sunny day.
Overall we will be returning again and would recommend this site for others to enjoy

We have stayed at Thornton's Holt twice and will be back again this year. It's just a lovely friendly site, just the right size, relaxed and stress-free. The pitches are good size and level.
Both times were were pitched in the same area called the Paddock I think. Tents and vans pitched around the perimeter, not so close as to feel hemmed in, all with EHU and the kids all playing in the large centre area. Enough room for kids, dogs & dads to run about with balls & frisbees etc. The whole place seemed to be set out like this.
There's a mens and a womens washroom and the showers are 20p, which didn't bother me but irritates some people. There's a shelf and hooks in the shower cubi so your gear can stay dry and there's shower curtains. I don't think I had to queue for a shower if I did it wasn't for long. There are hairdryers and a mirror area and a sink for washing clothes in there too.
The attached washing up sinks are fine, under cover, kept clean. There's a large freezer where campers can store food & ice packs.
We've never been to their lovely little swimming pool because the first time it was fully booked, you have to buy your tickets as you check in and we left it too late. So they told us about a nice local pool in Cotgrave and we loved it. Just a leisure centre pool but with a lovely flume and small slides for the pre-schoolers. A sloped beach type bit for splashing and a deep area big enough and empty enough to do some swimming for exercise.
There's a little Sainsburys in cotgrave and some takeaways though we haven't tried them.
The campsite play area is popular with the kids, there's also a covered games area but that tends to be the older kids. The shop is small but adequate and the staff friendly and helpful. I love the chickens wandering about making clucky noises.
The site is great for parents, it's big enough to have plenty of friends for our kids to make but small enough to feel secure. There's no fishing lake for them to fall into.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site and look forward to returning soon.

We have just come back from an overnight stay at this campsite, it's a lovely site.
The toilet blocks were clean and well maintained not heated but that's half the fun. The playground was well equipped for all ages and safe.
The campsite had a lovely friendly feel about it and all the staff were really helpful and friendly. The swimming pool was lovely warm and clean and also well managed.
The local pub is within walking distance and does cheap and tasty food, local supermarket is a Sainsbury's local and has all the essentials.
We will definitely go back to this site

Just returned from this site, we only live some 20 miles away but wanted a quiet get away with out the children, we found the site to be very friendly and had a proper camping atmosphere that you don't get with some bigger sterile sites.
The free range chickens running around gave us much amusement and we noticed other peoples children enjoying them too.
The toilet and shower block is getting slightly tired, but clean at all times, and I didn't mind the 20p charge because they lasted well over 3 minutes and were always lovely and hot!
There are plans displayed at reception of the work that is on-going to refurbish the facilities so that should tidy things up a bit, having said this I found them adequate and certainly not the worst I have seen!
I can't comment on the children's play park, but we did go for a swim which was lovely.
The Crown Carvery (2 minutes walk from site) was nice for a cheap tea, when the rain put us off cooking at the tent.
The only local attraction we visited was Holme pierepoint (national water sports centre) which is literally a 5 minute drive from the site, and perfect for a walk ot bike ride as it is completely flat.
We really enjoyed our 2 nights at this site, and will returning with kids on tow soon!

Lovely campsite and very friendly staff (family run).
Pitch felt a little cramped but space given was adequate.
Showerblocks very tired looking but served the purpose, showers cost 20p and mine was fine but unfortunately my husband got cold/hot all the way through. Also when washing up we had a few problems getting hot water from the taps - it seemed very inconsistant. However owners obviously recognise the need to update as they have plans for a super duper shower block, new reception area and cafe - I only hope the development doesn't spoil the 'cosy' feeling of the site.
Playground was great and they even had the old style iron horse outside reception which was lovely.
Unfortunately we didn't get to use the swimming pool as we weren't told at reception (an oversight I'm sure) that we needed to book slots (restriction on numbers) and by the time we read this in our leaflet, all the slots had gone. Very disappointing for our 3 year old who was really looking forward to it.
The pizza van was great for the evenings and the pizza yummy. !
We were pitch no 146 around the playing field - normally great when you have children and it was lovely to see all the kids playing during the day. However as we had very young children who were in bed by 730pm, we had to sit and listen to all the teenages (and adults) playing football and constantly shouting commentary of the match as they played, together with kicking the leather football which in itself made a right racket - this went on right up to the noise kerfew of 1030pm.
The location of site was great as it was only about half an hours drive for us (perfect when you're only doing 2 nights!). It's close to the city centre if you wanted to go into town or otherwise there are lots of attractions nearby - we went to Ferry Farm somewhere (despite being close to our home) we hadn't been before and it was lovely - great mix of farm animals and play ground equipment for running off steam.

What a nice site!
The pitch was large and situated in the top camping field which had a huge area in the middle of it where games could be played without disturbing anybody. The animals freely walking around are a nice addition and went down well with our friends 18 month-old.
The facilities were nice and clean and perfectly adequate. Sadly we didn't have time to check out the pool but it looked good from the outside! The on-site shop was stocked with food essentials as well as some camping accessories like pegs etc. Speaking of pegs; we found we needed some rock pegs so don't forget to take them!
Our friends 18 month-old enjoyed the play area and it seemed very well maintained. The on-site pizza van was a nice touch too - very cheap and tasted good after setting up the tent on our day of arrival!
Location-wise; nice and central location for both Nottingham and Sherwood, plus plenty of shopping and food options in nearby villages.
All-in-all, a very nice site that I'd recommend to anyone.

This is by and large a good site. The owners are very nice and the site is mostly level with good sized pitches. There is a children's play area, although it could do with a coat of paint and a small shop.
The site has an indoor swimming pool, although the numbers allowed in are limited and so booking is essential during busy periods. It is a shame however, that the pool is not monitored as we were unlucky enough to have the family from hell in there with us!
Nice, quiet site (the owners even stopped the noise from a nearby party - nothing to do with the site) which is well looked after.
Shower and toilet facilities are clean but very much in need of updating (although I believe this is happening at the moment). Disappointing that showers are not free though.
Nice pub within a few minutes walk and close to a couple fo local villages for supermarkets/takeaways etc. During the weekend we stayed there was a takeaway van on site from 4pm until late selling pizza's etc. Good value and very nice too!
Site is nice and secure with code activated barrier, and lots of free range chickens roaming around which was lovely for the kids.
Overall, would certainly recommend.

A really nice family friendly site.
Good points:
Lots of space for the kids to play
Lots of animals to keep the little ones entertained as well (Chickens, Rabbits, Horses and Dogs were all encountered on our walks round the site
Decent play area with climbing and balancing equipment
Really helpful staff
Nice size pool for the kids, we hired it for a private swim for £25 and it was lovely and warm (though the shower in the changing area didn't work whilst we were there)
Adequate toilet and shower facilities
Bad Points
Only 4 wash-up sinks for the entire site
The water temperature could be variable, very hot at times from the taps and showers so little ones beware
Overall though we enjoyed our stay and would certainly visit again.

Fantastic site offering huge value for money. We went recently with a few other families and there was plenty of space for all. Really beautiful, well maintained site with good clean loos and showers. Showers take 20p's but I extravagantly spent 60p on a shower and had ages and a good, hot, powerful spray.
Hired swimming pool for private use for an hour which was great (about £24). Good play area and free roaming ducks, chickens etc. Plenty of space for kite flying and rounders too. On site shop with basics.
Some of our friends who were with us have already booked their next stay and we won't be far behind I'm sure!

Decided last minute to go camping although was very dubious as it was only April. Chose this site as it was near enough to go home if it became cold.
Visited with my partner and two children 11 and 9. What a lovely site, clean tidy, and very welcoming. We were given a lovely large pitch which the kids loved as they played football, and flew kites in the large open space opposite.
My partners car wouldn't start due to us running the cool box off the battery all day! our fault! We rang the emergency number and within five mins Simon appeared on his tractor and got us up and running, and this was at 9.45 at night. Couldn't have done more for us.
Toilets very clean although old, never ever a queue, and the longest 3 mins I have ever known.
Cotgrave five minutes away by car, didn't find morrisons, but I'm sure we will on our next visit. You must visit the pub around the corner the carvery is enormous, and the kids loved the bottomless ice creams.
We enjoyed it so much we have already booked for whit week. Forgot the lovely Italian Pizza van that arrives each evening, and of course had to try them and they are lovely.
Ideal for families with children, although my partner and I would enjoy the canal walks. The kids got bored after an hour, but were bribed with a bottomless ice cream at the end.
A lovely weeks holiday, and looking forward to our return visit in May. You need to book early for the weekends, as they seem to get booked very early.
