Nice campsite, smack in the middle of the mountains. Fantastic views from all round. Shower and toilets block is very clean, 20p for shower. 4 pot wash sinks. There is 3 area's for tents. The bigger bottom field does have the flater pitchers which get full quickly. the other two are on a slope.
On the site there was Kate's gourmet kitchen chuk wagon. She did bacon, eggs, sausage ,tea, cofee etc. Very handy!
Back of the farm house is the path by Mires Beck towards Helvelyn and Striding Edge and other easy routes. Brilliant walk by Mires Beck, which gives you views over ulswater lake and Glenridding!
From the campsite, just a short walk down towards Glenridding there's a pub called Travelers Rest. A very traditional pub. They do a mixture of fine ales and lovely food, which they serve all day and quite late at night 10pm.
There's a couple for Hotels that have restrauants, One as a play area for children.
There's also a ferryboat that takes you arcoss the lake to Patterdale and other areas. You can take it easy and just walk round the lake. It as small beachy type coves to sit.
Don't forget to call at Aura Force waterfalls and streams. It's £2.50 to park, but is well worth a visit, you could spend all day here. Good for younger children, but not ideal for push chairs.

We spent a long weekend here camping and on arriving late Friday afternoon had plenty of choices where to pitch, there is a large flat area and also a sloping part which we pinched on but looks worse than it actually is. The owners where lovely and nothing was too much trouble for them, you don't need to book in advance and can pay night by night. Scenery from campsite was gorgeous and very tranquil as your at the foot of Helvellyn 3rd largest moutain in England which was a beautiful walk and owners of farm supplied us with a detailed map to help with the walk. Campsite did fill up quite a bit on Saturday which you would expect but it was never noisy or rowdy. There were 3 showers for each sexes both very clean, takes 20p's, the only draw back was due to high volume of usage on Saturday hot water couldn't keep up with damand so get your shower early, all the other days where fine. Burger van on site Saturdays and Sundays mornings for a breakfast in a bun. The village is only 5 minutes walk away along the stream with a tourist information centre, 2 tea houses, 2 general groceries stores which stock everything you could possibly need and 3 pubs in the village - Ratchers, Ramblers rest and the travellers rest ( food there was gorgeous ). We loved the place, had a fantastic weekend and would definatley go again.

Spent 3 nights on this site in the beautiful weather and got a great tan.
Could not fault the facilities. The showers cost 20p but were well worth it as you could control the temperature and there seemed to be no time limit to how long you spent in the shower. The breakfast van in the weekend mornings was very reasonably priced, and the washing up area was clean.
The views from the site were beautiful and if you ran out of anything it was only a 5 minute walk to Glenridding whose shops had everything you needed.

August 2004 We spent a week here with fantastic weather admitedlly (despite the mother of all thunderstorms one night!) The location does not get much better than this but it does get busy on summer weekends (tents packed in but it was a very hot weekend). During the week it is great. We loved it! Walk straight from the site onto Helvellyn, Fairfield, High Street and more, with the village of Glenridding nearby too (5 minute walk by the river) which is an added bonus. The village is great for all the usual stuff you would need and pleasant for a lovely wander near the lake or into Patterdale on wetter days. The owners are very friendly and you can pay night by night even at peak times. Much of the camping is sloping but there is a big flat bit too which we had no trouble getting onto. Laundry facilites on caravan section and owners sell basics (great mini market / deli/ off licence in village next door to excellent outdoor shop too). National Park info centre in village very useful for maps, guide books etc. Toilets are basic but good and always had hot water- clean enough too (plug socket for those that can't live without hair straightners!) Mobile type cafe on site at weekends which goes down a treat with all who like bacon butties! Rambler's Rest pub five minutes walk from site with spectacular views, undercover seating area outside, beer garden, good food, welcoming to dogs but gets busy unsurprisingly (don't let this put you off) Can't really beat this site of you like a proper walker's site but with a few added extras that don't spoil its very essence. Will be returning and probably one of the best I have stayed on.

October 2004 A nice campsite with good, clean facilities. Lovely walk up to Helvellyn and striding edge, but only if you like scrambling a little! Great lake down in the village where you can hire sailing boats and canoes and kayaks. There is a nice restaurant in the village, where we ate for £20 a head, and some helpful shops.

August 2004 Great little site, but mostly sloping pitches on the camping area. Never did find the laundry. Can be a lot windier than you'd expect from a site surrounded by hills on one side and trees on t'other. No wind when we got there, but then blew constantly from West (down the valley) for 10 days.

July 2004 Great little site, right by the riverside, reasonable facilities, with very hot showers, (20p) and plug points for hair dryer, 5 mins walk from Glenridding - only down side no good pubs to eat at in Glendridding
Would recommend.

July 2003 Gillside is a good site. There is a stream that runs through the site and is very good for putting your lager in it and keeping it cold! It is surounded by mountains so you dont get a signal on your mobile but there is a payphone on site. There is a small shop next to reception which sells eggs, milk, sweets and crisps. There are 2 good pubs nearby called the travellers rest and there is another one a bit further called the Ramblers lodge that is a bit more lively. There are also shops and boat hire lakes all within walking distance.
