Just to add a few lines to the previous reviews; we use Hillside regularly and it did cross my mind not to post a review at all - but this was purely out of selfishness as the site is so good that I almost want to keep it for myself!

Although the scenery is fantastic, the facilities are excellent and the location as a touring base takes some beating ( the North Yorks Moors, Dales and East Coast are all easy drives) the site is made for us by Pat, Chris and their sons and the enormous hard work they put into the site.

We have seen them cleaning up or moving caravans, or helping people with advice from first thing in the morning until VERY late at night.

The site is peaceful and secluded and you have to decide if that is what suits you.It would be pointless me going to one of the big East Coast sites and complaining it was noisy and too busy and similarly I think that adding things like shops etc not only adds to the already onerous work the family need to do to keep the site as it is- it also changes the type of site it is. If you crave the peace and quiet then its for you. If not: you need somewhere with shops, chippy etc.

Its not hard to remember to buy milk. Nor is far to Thirsk which has a big Tesco and all the shops you could need, if (like me ) you forget sometimes.Cant comment on the Dog and Gun but the Carpenters Arms at Felixkirk has superb food and ale and is a nice walk of around 3.5 miles away. Enjoy!

One of our favourite stops ! A lovely park, wonderful welcome, excellent facilities.

Nothing was too much trouble for the park owners. The surrounding countryside is breathtaking and there are well marked walking paths for exploring.

There is a lovely stream running through the park and the information booth is packed with material for local attractions. The shower was amongst the best we found on our holiday.

Thirsk is quite close and there are many good restaurants in the town. Definitely recommended if you plan to visit this area.

Stayed for 3 nights. Would have stayed longer but had other commitments. Really nice site. Previous reviews are spot on so do not see the need to repeat.

We were lead to our allocated pitch so no need to tour around the site looking. When we were there a large number of vans appeared to have booked in for the season yet were unoccupied during our visit, so things were quiet.

Toilet block very clean. Good dog walking on site.

Did not try the local 'Dog & Gun' so cannot comment. Worth noting is the wood carver in Knayton village. His work is very good and he does commissions.

Situated just off the A19 this site is an ideal base for touring from.

Just returned home from spending 5 nights at this site. We selected the site after reading the excellent previous reviews on this web site.

All the good comments are valid, the site is conveniently situated just off the A19 yet it is tucked away in a very peaceful and quiet location just 5 miles from Thirsk & 6 miles from Northallerton.

We had excellent days out at both & at Helmsley which is about 20 miles away. The pitches are a good size & although there is only one toilet block it is adequate for the size of the site.

The toilet / wash room / showers are modern & have underfloor heated tiles which are great.

The family who own & run the site are very helpful & friendly but the comment that the site would benefit from a small shop is true as we ran out of milk & had to drive into Thirsk to get some more.

This was a site saved in my 'virtual brochure' ready for when we could visit, based solely on other reviews. We loved it here. The site is easy to get to, from the A1, on to the A19, following signs for Knayton.

Once you pass through this little village, Dog and Gun pub on the left, keep going along the country lane til you get to the site sign, do not turn as sat nav may suggest!

Pleasant welcome. Mr Cook will take your caravan from you from outside the gate and hook up to his tractor and place it on your pitch.

I would say pitch sizes are fair. I think it would be tight to fit an awning and park your car along side, however there are several parking areas throughout the site to park your car. Each pitch is what I think is called a super pitch.

A bollard with a light showing you that there is your hook up point, water taps (potable and non-potable) as well as waste pipe, and aerial point (don't have a TV so cannot comment on reception. I think man next door said he watched the rugby so can't be too bad).

There is a good play area, but rain stopped play!

Amenities block is great. Warm and clean. Pot wash area was indoors and was of a good size. Recycling bins available.

Went to Dog and Gun as recommended by other reviews. I would probably call it decent pub grub. Not trying to be anything other. What they did serve was hot, tasty and appetising, nothing too adventurous.

Spent Saturday morning in Thirsk. Great fruit and veg market. Had a lovely lunch in the Arabica coffee shop next to parking on the square. Small menu but very tasty and reasonably priced, unlike York's.

Spent afternoon at Monks Farm. Enjoyed feeding the animals but very muddy because of the weekends rain, grounds not set up for this. Had a tea and cake in the cafe. Wasn't particularly fussed by this, smelled of a greasy spoon cafe and service was slow.

Got out of the rain on sunday morning and took 7 yr old to a ball park, set on an industrial estate on way in to Thirsk, Twinkies I think. Not a great size, prob more suited to 5's and under. Cafe sells drinks and sandwiches.

There is a Tourist information office on the square in Thirsk. The lady there seemed very knowledgeable of the area and was a great help (Margaret, I think).

Unfortunately we had a particularly wet weekend here so did not get to go along any of the country walks (forgot the wellies) but will definitely return when weather is a bit more predictable ( if that is possible in the UK ).

Really splendid little site with lovely owners, the play area was a real treat as was the lovely walk along the beck. The James Herriot country is a total joy to visit with a museum in the local town, just round the corner from the square.

There is a large fishing complex not too far away, but would recommend staying well away from it.

The Dog and Gun is a great little pub as is the Darraby in the Town.

Monk PArk farm is a great day out too to take the little ones to see the farm animals.

It had taken 4 attempts to get booked up for this site. And you can see why when you get there.

The welcome we received was warm and helpful the lady then jumped on her bike and escorted us to our pitch, then helped us pitch our van then said anything else we needed just ask.

The pitch was a super pitch and it was as described everything within 2ft of the caravan great.

The site was immaculate very well maintained there was a nice play park within view of our pitch, large field behind with horses in which you can feed if they get close enough. My only criticism was the pond which had no fence around it.

A verdict of this site would be easy to give.ITS GREAT

Owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Site was immaculately kept. Toilet and shower block was again immaculately kept, spotlessly clean with underfloor heating.

Excellent views of the surrounding countryside. Visited the Dog and Gun for a quick drink before returning to the site and the barmaid was continuously answering the phone for bookings and more often than not stating they were full so wouldn't have thought you could just drop in without a booking.

Used Sat Nav and were instructed to turn off approach road approximately half a mile before the site up a dirt track - site does have a big sign at the entrance so don't turn off road!.

What a gem of a site, rather reluctant to give too many superlatives as would like to keep it to ourselves, but feel the owners deserve praise for a wonderful site. Lovely views, peaceful, even though there were lots of families.

Children really enjoyed the play area. Our five year old loved the wildlife pond teeming with dragonflies and we even found baby drogs and newts. A little beck runs at the bottom of the site. Lovely gentle walks on the owners land around the site.

Area superb for things to do. We visited the Forbidden Corner, Aysgarth Falls, Saltburn (wonderful seaside location - very quaint), Lightwater Valley, Thirsk ( nearby town for all necessities - good fish and chip shop in centre), Gormire Lake walk accessible by a very steep road where caravans are not permitted (rather interesting).

The owners are very friendly, helpful and must have worked hard to produce an 'all inclusive' site. If we did have any gripes it is the showers, although the building is lovely and clean, the showers are fixed high on the wall, rather a trickle and not easy to wash ones nether regions!

All in all though we cant wait to return.

Well what a lovely find, very friendly, warm welcome and a lovely large hard standing, fully serviced pitch which included a TV ariel point.

Village pub would really be a drive away or approx 20 mins walk, our neighbours said the food was lovely.Booking was advisable though

Toilet block was immaculate, lovely hot water and never anything but clean, a very important point to me.

We did not have children with us but other children looked to be enjoying the play area, unless you were told about the picnic area behind the play area, you maybe wouldn't know it existed.

We have booked again and we know we will really enjoy our stay.

Dont want to tell everyone,we may not get booked up again.
