Perhaps the muddiest campsite we've ever stayed in. Our car got stuck in the mud straight away, but there were a number of friendly campers on hand to push it out! An average campsite. Close to the Lake which was nice. Very large, loads of tents all close to each other. There were however plenty of showers to cope with the number of campers and the toilet facilities were quite clean. 50p a shower - always irritates me when I have to pay! A pleasant walk across the fields into Coniston.

Just got back from a weekend at this site. After reading the reviews I was a bit unsure but went anyway. First of all I found the staff quite abrupt and not very friendly. Toilet and shower facitilies were good, clean and warm. I don't mind paying 50p for a warm shower. The location was ok, I was hoping for better views but the short walk to the lake is worth it. It rained all weekend and most of the site was flooded by monday, luckily we'd camped on the higher ground so stayed dry. Avoid low lying area or anywhere near the steam. All in all an enjoyable visit but I probably wouldn't go back without trying other sites in the area.

August 2005 Went to this site as it was one of the only sites that did not take bookings for the bank holiday. Anybody arriving late Friday could not get on..... no supprise there even though the weather was poor at times. Excellent toilet block! I have been camping for 25 years and this was the first site where I never had to go back to my tent for toilet roll. Every time I made a visit (well over 30) there were at least 1/2 top quality toilet rolls in the dispenser. Now at bank holiday that takes some doing.
Site was very full from Thursday, as expected,
I also have no problems with a site that allows tents to pack in as close as they wish. Many tents had interlocking guy ropes. Dont slag off the owners for taking the opportunity to fill their site (3/4 times a year)
How many sites class themselves as full when all can see that there are lots of pitches.
Real campers dont mind being close to others as long as they can keep the noise down at a decent time. people who want 3 miles between tents should go elsewhere so they can be tucked up in bed by 7.30 with a horlicks.
Great site, great lake, great walks, great toilets, small shop but good prices. 10/10

Read to the end: Approached staying here with trepidation after reading the reviews but some friends from abroad had chosen it for the lake location so we went along. We were gutted upon arrival - it was pretty busy, lots of large unruly families around with large numbers of unruly kids and associated paraphenalia. In an adjacent field some farmer was burning old tyres (nice)so that didn't help either. Eventually found a pitch (patch of grass that wasn't in a wierd dip or too stony)but this was only after ringing a couple of other places to see if we could get elsewhere (no luck). We resigned ourselves to it and reasoned that since we had just spent a week at Castlerigg Hall in Keswick (brilliant site), our judgement was coloured by that. We have stayed at some rough campsites in the past having said this, but this has been fine because the locations were so breathtaking. The problem here is that you have no views- you might be able to peep at the lake through the trees if you're lucky! Anyway, we were determined to be cheerful for when the rest of our group turned up later in the day and went down by the lake- it is a wonderful location if you want to sit by the lake or kayak or enjoy views over Grizedale. In the sunshine it all started to look better I have to say. The toilets were old but same as any other reasonable campsite- cleaned to perfection every day and probably a bit scruffy by nine o clock each morning after everyone has used them. 50p for the shower needed and it was reasonable. Two plug points in the ladies which are handy for anyone staying a while and wanting to dry your hair. We expected loads of noise but it was ok- people were up including kids but there was no noise that disturbed us but I can imagine there would be if nine times out of ten. It was pretty busy - lots of Glastonbury jokes made from our group! Personally, I wouldn't camp here again but that's mainly because I like a good view and you don't get that here. Otherwise, if you don't mind noise, dodgy picthes and unfriendly owners and you want to chill with your kids whilst they mess in the lake then this site will probably be ok for you! (Sorry it's so long!)

Contrary to recent reviews we found this campsite to be perfectly suited to our needs. Clean toilets and shower block, even at peak times only a queue of 3 for the ladies showers. Ideally placed with easy access to, and beautiful views over the lake. Those wanting to make noise went down to the lake in the evening, which is sufficiently far away from the campsite over a bank, so that the noise does not carry at all back to the site. Well stocked shop and reasonably priced.

July 2005 We have just returned from a relaxing 10 day holiday staying the entire time at this campsite, I do have to agree with previous reviews it can be a little noisy at weekends and some nights but the the noisiest people we found were middle aged men! not youngsters as previously reported. The site has good, regulary cleaned facilities (the lady always seemed to be there)plenty of toilets and sinks and if you pick the right time enough showers, again the only problem we had was getting to use the sinks in the morning and evening whilst fighting through a barrage of hair straightening maniacs!!
The site has a no fires rule but this was rarely upheld and we actually heard a group of middle aged men sawing a tree down for fire wood, as if its going to burn durrr! A little more wardening would be good before the beautiful lakeside is destroyed.
All in all I,my husband and 3 teenage daughters enjoyed a great holiday having hired a canoe and getting a fantastic pitch near to the lake but had to leave early but were given a refund for the last 3 nights which was pretty decent and totaly unexpected having read previous reviews.
This is a great campsite, with clean facilites and a godsend washing machine we have been before and will go again. Remember you're camping not staying at the Ritz! A lot of the problems at this campsite were down to the campers NOT the owners.

July 2005 Got to the site at 2.30pm found a decent pitch next to the army site, the camp site was fairly busy but by 4.00pm all pitches had been taken, the site has only one shower block, this is not enough considering the amount of people they cram on the site. The lady works hard cleaning the toilets then she was in yhe shop as well.
They don,t seem to bother about the noise levels after 11.00pm as we had a wanna be Eric Clapton next door with his guitar. A small group of people deciced to have a swim in the lake at 3.00am which was rather unthoughtful, but still there you go.
All in all the site could be very nice but too many people for my liking. Would I go again? Poss but it would have to be midweek

July 2005 I have just spent last weekend at Coniston Hall and would like to add my comments in the hope that the owners of the site will read this.
Put in context, last weekend was also the date for Coniston Country Fair next door to the site in the grounds of the Hall.
There were so many people allowed onto this site that tents were literally pitched for the most part within 5 feet of each other. For those who know this site and know how big it is, this is not an exageration.
This is just plain GREED on behalf of the owners who did not think of the comfort or safety of their guests, just how much extra money they could make.
The site should have been declared full early Friday evening, yet there were still people allowed in on Saturday. So many people crowded in just makes for a very uncomfortable weekend.
If anyone else was there last weekend I hope you will confirm what I am saying.

July 2005 This is the 3rd time we have been here and although very busy on this weekend we came, again we really enjoyed it. The weather was amazing (perhaps even a little too hot!) and and this time we discovered the lake at the bottom of the campsite that could plodge in! never knew that was there beforehand!
Was a bit noisy, suprisingly it was a big family making the noise until early hours, but everyone left on the sunday, and the campsite was practically ours! £5 a night with £5 desposit you get at the end of your visit, and takes plenty of 50ps!!!

June 2005 Went to this campsite last weekend with my family, the showers and toilets were spotless but it was very busy. There were large groups of families partying all night with children riding round on bikes well after 12. On the Saturday the owners did come out and shout at the revellers at about 1.30 am. Why go to a campsite with a no noise rule if you want to party???
