This is an excellent site set within amazing surroundings. It's situated just at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass and some excellent hill walks, such as Fairfield, Hart Crag and Helvellyn are accessible directly from the site. Also nearby is the village of Hartsop and Brotherswater Lake, but apart from this the site is pretty isolated. However, the site provides good facilities, meaning you don't really have to venture away at all for essentials.
The site is very well run and and maintained. There are plenty of showers and toilets and they do the job, despite getting muddy easily. But let's face it, this is a camp site in an isolated spot in the Lakes! The Brotherswater Inn is a good pub on site and offers good food. I particularly liked the Barn End Bar, catering for campers and hikers - a great idea for if the weather turns bad. The shop on site sells many essentials, as well as camping equipment and hiking maps. If camping isn't your thing, there is a camping barn on site or B&B rooms at the inn.
One thing I've noticed in reviews of this site is complaints about the weather. What they expect the site managers to do about this, I don't know. However, they provide two bars and a drying room: short of working miracles on Lakeland weather patterns, I'm not sure what else they can be expected to do to make people's stay more comfortable!
A great site if you just want to enjoy Lake District surroundings and enjoy a few drinks and a meal in the evening.

On the whole this is a very good site very dog friendly, the facilities were clean though only cleaned once a day even at peak times like weekend The campsite was full and the facilities were not at there best the hot water does run out at busy times but most of the time there nice and hot.
The shop was well stocked recommend the local beacon and sausages the only problem with the shop was the opening hours didn't open until 8:30 and shut by 17:30 open longer on a Friday. The campsite bar never seemed to be open I think in 8 days there we only see it open once but the Brotherswater inn more then made up for it good food, good drink and friendly staff and they allow dogs inside.
The location of the site is ideal for walkers and mountain bikers the local Campingaz dealer is in Ambleside and its the hard wear shop opposit Blacks and Milletts. There are plenty of high areas to set up tent if its wet and the ground is hard on pegs.

Re: previous reviews! If you want children's facilities take them to Centre Parcs! Stop whining about lack of play areas! This site is situated in the most amazing areas with fields and mountains all around. There is a lake and a river a short walk away. There is plenty for children to do,it's just it may involve parents vacating their comfy chairs! This is one of only a few areas that I will happily allow the kids to disappear off and be left to their own devices with strict instructions on what time to return! The pub is fine , it's a walkers pub! For better cuisine go over to Troutbeck for Mortal Man or Queens Head. You are clearly told and there are signs about the badgers so if you get nocturnal visits, it's your own fault! The bathrooms are okay nothing special but this camping! If you want power showers try the Hilton! This is a fab site, Very family friendly, fantastic location! Go and enjoy!

Visited weekend of 7/8 July with friends. Date is important as it has been raining heavily for weeks. Our first visit to Sykeside but our friends have been a few times. First impressions were that it was very welcoming and friendly, we were told where was best to camp and where to avoid (due to waterlogging.) Our friends had arrived so we pitched next to them on a good dryish spot. Plenty of room for tents - we have a Monty 6 so not the smallest but no worries about space. Ate at the Barn End bar on Friday evening as by the time we had arrived and pitched the children were starving and it was raining heavily. Good food, good beer - first trip to a pub since July 1st - heaven, no smoke. Weather cleared up on Saturday so didn't use the bar/pub on site facilities again. It became busier on Saturday but still not packed in by any stretch. The run of poor weather obviously has put people off. Overall impression - stunning location, great local walking, very family friendly - we have 2 children who are 2 & 5 and it was great for them. Our friends children are the same age so with 4 young children it was an ideal place. Went to the Lake on Sat pm and spent a couple of hours there playing, went down to the stream and walked. Plenty of scope for good healthy outdoor activity with kids. Our 5 year olds rode their biked constantly without worry of accident so good for that. The only negative was showers and toilets. The gents was dirty, toilets, urinal and shower all in the same space made for damp, smelly facilities. Because of the weather they became muddy very quickly. Cleaned between 12 - 2pm daily but really this wasn't enough - could have provided mops and squeegy for people to mop out their shower after use. Didn't take my son in for a shower all weekend because of the facilities. I would go for a weekend again as it's a lovely site that is friendly and great for children. I wouldn't stay for any longer than 2 nights because of toilets/showers. Heard the Badgers one night but they didn't bother us - left food in the car as advised.

Fantastic site. Situated at the bottom of Helvellyn the scenery is dramatic and the same can be said of the weather at that time of year. Toilet/shower facilities very nice and heated which was essential. Think this time of year may have been a little to cold and rainy for my taste and probably also due to the fact that this is set quite high up and in a valley. Woke up freezing (literally) the first morning and the second night was just noisy strong wind blowing right down the valley. Two pubs (one on site and one just at top of campsite). Would visit again but probably at a warmer time of year!

August 2004 Lovely views, not much shelter and very boggy during wet weather. Great on site pub which gets very busy. Toilets and shower block get very busy during peak periods. Not very clean. Not very friendly at the shop, and don't play a radio even at lowest volume or you will get told off! Area for walking dogs, and nice walks along the lake. Very regimental site, would not reccommend in wet weather. Watch out for the farmer who threatens to shoot dogs!

July 2004 Quiet campsite with great views, however we found it regimental and ufriendly, pity. Large open field, a few private area pitches under the trees - but don't play a radio! Dog walk area and on site shop

Well. Arrived Friday aft: Site quiet, weather glorious, scenery spectacular. Ate at Brotherswater Inn on the Friday (Barn End Bar closed). Food not bad and maybe a tad overpriced for what it is. Saturday: Site getting busier, weather grey, scenery obscured by cloud By teatime site was heaving. Tents crammed in every where. Facilities (esp toilets) were struggling to cope. Tents were too close together and we were kept awake by the loudest snorer in the world and van drivers running diesel engines till nearly midnight Went out Sunday and when we came back at 2 o'clock the site was almost deserted again. It was bizarre. Stayed till Tuesday and had a great time (but for the weather which stayed grey!) Overall a very nice site. Great setting. Shop well stocked and staff more than helpful, Barn End Bar only open at weekends from what I could tell. Brotherwater Inn more restaurant than Inn but pleasant non-the less. Would definitely come back, just not on a Saturday night.ever! (Oh., no badgers encountered but did put the food in the car every night)

Just got back from a great nights camping for the first weekend in June Site: Very busy Noise: MMM last weekend of school hols so lots of children having great fun and all settled down by 11:30pm Pub: Great lunch at a good price, Beer a must for people who like good real ale. Showers: Once again hot but do get cold when lots of people are using them as the water is fresh from the fells. Toilets: The best campsite toilets I have used, even when they blocked on Saturday evening staff went straight in and did what needed to be done. Views: Awesome sunset and great views around the sites as long as you don't mind looking up the fells. This site is a must for all weather your a walker or a family looking for a base for the lakes.

In a nutshell;
Price: Steep (ish), but open in winter Pitch: Take a mallet to be sure Views: Woken up to better ones, but that often involves lugging gear up hills Ambience: Quiet, likely due to season Bogs: If you need a dump you won’t notice cubicle size or decor Pub: Expect ‘theme restaurant with beer’ and you’ll be ok Bar: Closed Food: Alright; generous portions for, price vs quality against Staff: Friendly Badgers: Must have been too cold for ‘em
