We had a fantastic week at this site during the disappointing summer of 2007 - in the midst of all the floods! However despite the rainfall the pitches were well drained and the site well kept - if a little characterless. The beauty of this site is its afinity with nature and the shower blocks are built to blend in with their surroundings, which would be great in the height of summer but they could do with some heating for when the weather's not so good - it would have been nice to have come back from a day walking in the rain to a nice shower in a warm room!
The beach is about 1 mile away and is a pleasant walk over the fields and a gorgeous coastal walk to the neighbouring village of Craster - a must if you like kippers!
The nearest pubs are in Embleton village, again about 1 mile away - reached either over the fields or via the road. Most of the pubs in this area are dog friendly and offer good food at value for money prices.
Staying at this site gives the option of seclusion when you want it, but also near enough the to the attractions of Beadnell Bay, Seahouses and Bamburgh etc.
I would stay here again purely for the location - but I have to be honest, shivering in the showers does put me off a bit!

Despite all pitches being taken, the site had a friendly, relaxed, peaceful feel. It is very dog friendly and has a great dog walk through the trees to the beach (30 mins). Popular with families and the younger children are well-catered for with a little playpark.
The wardens are well-organised and make you very welcome. We were shown to our pitch and even guided-in so that our unit was level and there was plenty of space; excellent service when you've travelled a long way. The toilets were amongst the cleanest we have seen and the whole site was spotless and well-kept. The site road could benefit from being tarmac rather than loose hardcore as it was noisy when cars passed by and did send stones flying.
The area itself is ideal for walkers and cyclists as there are so many pathways to interesting places. Unfortunately, we are unable to walk very far due to arthritis and this made our enjoyment of the area very limited. It would be ideal for families with young children but teenagers would soon become bored with sandcastles and the abundance of real castles. There are very few supermarkets and cafes in the close vacinity unless you go to Alnwick.
We stayed a week but did everything in about 3 days, including Lindisfarne (highly recommended).
Overall, the site is perfectly positioned for everywhere within the area from Lindisfarne to Amble, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it; we give it 8 out of 10.
Best kept secret. Beadnell Bay!

We first visited here in 2003 and loved it although the kids hated it as it was so rural. Now we only have one accompanying us and she's older we thought we'd take the opportunity tore-visit this beautiful area. We arrived the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend.
What a difference a year or two can make.
There are 6 very friendly wardens on site but somehow management of the site seems to have gone downhill. In the 20 years we've been caravanning we've never seen pitches in such poor condition. We were on the top part of the site and the grass was at least 6 inches long and wasn't mowed in the 8 days we spent there. This was interspersed with patches of completely bald earth where units have continually been sited. There didn't appear to be any attempt to try and manage the pitches -common sense surely?
Narrow hardstandings have also been added and these can only accommodate a 'van and awning with the car parked across the front.I assume that this means that pitch numbers have increased but makes everywhere appear very cramped and there seemed very little privacy.I would imagine they were full to capacity while we were there and the site looked like some sort of refugee camp. Saying that, the site settled down and was quiet by 11pm. There was about a 50/50 split with 'vans and tents.
There are 2 shower blocks, our nearest had 3 low pressure showers, half a dozen loos and a couple of wash cubicles - sometimes there were queues as you would expect at this time of year.
If you want to try quad biking I recommend Woolaw Farm nr Otterburn (dets at Alnwick tourist info). It's £20 for a good hour and the farmer takes you up over the moors showing you points of interest and history. This is a proper moorland farm, not some commercial enterprise. We found the cafe nearby at Brigantium (site of a roman fort) was great despite looking a bit dire from outside. You could combine this with a visit to the Nat Trust property at Cragside - very interesting for a long day out.
I would not have hesitated to recommend this site previously but not sure that I would now - pull your socks up Caravan and Camping Club - sadly this site isn't up to your normal standards at present.

This was our 2nd visit to Dunstan Hill, this time with my 2 stepdaughters. We have a large 8 person tent so sometimes you can feel like you are right on top of the next tent at some sites but not this one.
Dunstan Hill is a very well run, exceptionally clean site, which is a credit to the hard work of the wardens there. This site was our 1st visit to a CCC site and we were suitably impressed and have stayed members since 2007 because you know what you are going to get at their sites.
On check in we were greeted by a friendly man who checked us in quickly and efficiently and then kindly showed us to our pitch and gave us a few details of the site. We were pitched up near the road but I have to say this didn't keep us awake at night as it's not that busy at night.
The facilities were kept exceptionally clean and whilst I agree with some people, that there aren't enough showers for when they are fully booked, I tended to shower before going to bed instead and never had a problem. They run it very sensibly too in the fact that the 2 blocks are closed separately; so if one block is closed you can always walk to the other and still use the facilities.
There is a good laundry area although we didn't actually use this. We did use the washing up area which is a bit small but it was fine and very clean (as long as others clean up behind themselves). Personally, I like the fact that they also have a couple of cubicles with sinks & lockable doors so you can have a strip wash if necessary. Not all sites have this surprisingly!
There is a smallish play area, which I can understand that some people would find inadequate, however in my experience the kids tend to amuse themselves or ride their bikes once they get to a certain age, so we didn't see this as a problem personally.
The fantastic thing about this site is that it is within walking distance of a fantastic beach. The beaches in Northumberland are amazing and never seem to get very busy, most probably because the sea is cold (North Sea). Wetsuits are a must if you want to get near the water but the beaches are gloriously sandy so perfect for playing or building sandcastles. Or in the case of our girls, digging a huge hole! Much fun was had by both.
The local area is full of things to do. We love castles and are English Heritage & National Trust members so a great list of places to visit. Highlights for us would be Alnwick Castle & Gardens (privately owned). Don't leave without having lunch or dinner at the Treehouse.
The food is locally sourced and the atmosphere is fantastic. In the evening it is lit with loads of pretty fairy lights and candles. Don't miss Barter Books, Alnwick in the old railway station if you like reading - it's a haven for people like us. I love the fact that you can find books and then get a cuppa and sit in the old waiting room or on one of the many comfy seats to flick through the books to confirm what to buy.
The great thing about Dunstan Hill is that it is rural and pretty but you aren't very far from main roads to get to attractions. It is also only about 1 hour to get to Edinburgh which we did on a rainy day and went shopping instead. I would also highly recommend Tantallon Castle on the coast on the way to Scotland, if only for it's fabulous location overlooking Bass Rock.
All in all this is a fabulous site in our opinion. In fact we are going back at the end of August this year with the girls again who are now 9 & 11. They haven't stopped talking about our camping trip to Northumberland since 2007. I think that says it all considering they were only 6 and 8 at the time.
My only criticisms would be that the prices have gone up and it's quite expensive for the quality & amount of showers. However, we love the area so much that we think it's worth it.

We stayed here for 2 nights and what a lovely site. During the very high winds on the Friday night the warden was checking around and found all the wardens on duty very friendly and helpful. Lovely quiet site with a little park that my 5 and 3 year old loved to 'hang around' with new found friends. There was a lovely walk to the beach. Toilets and showers were immaculate throughout our stay. There was a little shop in the village but only for basic supplies, we tended to have to go to the main shops in Seahouses. Would definitely go back again.

First trip of the year, and we chose to come back to this site, which we first "discovered" in 2006 when Beadnell Bay C&CC site was full one weekend. This is one of my favourites . As with all C&CC sites, there is good space between the tents, the facilities are clean, the wardens are really friendly and it is nice and quiet. (They found us a spot away from the play area as we don't have children). There is a very small shop on site, but otherwise it is a drive to the nearest village. Reason we came back here? Embleton Bay. It is my favourite beach on the Northumbrian coast, and it is a pleasant 20 minute walk from the campsite to the beach through trees and fields.

Agree with all comments, campsite is very clean, staff very friendly and helpful, toilets and showers checked and cleaned regularly and hot water was plentiful. The only fault we would have with this camp site is that it isn't such a great place for the kids to play. The park is tiny and there were no ball games allowed so the children were very limited on what they could do. So although we did enjoy our stay we felt it was a little bit too strict (lights out and no noise after 10.30!) and the site could benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere. I do understand that when the site is full, a whole load of kids playing football wouldn't be a good idea. I do however feel that maybe if there were a few less pitches and a small playing field sectioned off then this site would score top marks.

Good, well maintained site, toilets and shower units are spotless, small shop for essentials, very friendly staff, only problem, no signal for mobile phones which could be a good thing! Dog walk is enclosed within a strip of trees which run along the campsite and is about a mile long, beach is a long walk over some fields but worth the effort. Would recommend and will use again.

I agree the site is beautiful and the wardens couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, but I think the site is way over priced for what there is: I am not a member and had to pay a surcharge which meant I was paying £23 a night, but even without that I don't know if it would be worth it. There are not enough showers for a site this size and, to be honest, I thought the showers were the most pathetic I have seen in a long while. The heads are fixed and the water trickles out so you have to squeeze under with your back up against the pipework! My two children were not impressed by the play area either, not even my 9 year old.
But I do agree the site is well ordered, and even though it was full this weekend everybody respected the no-noise-late-at-night rule, and the walk to the beach is very easy and enjoyable.
Maybe I'll go back in low season, or when I win the lottery.
