Stayed here for one night on the way back from the Dordogne. Our last stay here was in 2006 and I had good memories of the site which I am pleased to say were reconfirmed. On arrival, the reception staff were very friendly and helpful and explained the layout of the site, opening times (closed at lunch and in the early afternoon and then open until 9pm), arrangements for using the swimming pool next to the site etc. We were able to pitch where we wanted and had a nice view over the river. Although pitches aren’t demarcated by hedges they are a good size. It looked like the main facilities block had been modernised since our last visit and this was a good size and spotlessly clean with plenty hot water. There were still 2 other blocks which we didn’t use.
As last time, campers can use the outdoor municipal swimming pool next door for free (ask reception for a ticket). This was welcome after a long hot drive. The pool is a good size with lawns all around for sunbathing.
A baker comes to the site every morning at around 8. 30 but it is also an easy walk into the very pretty town if you miss her. Although this is a big site there is plenty space and it has a very tranquil feel to it; I was sorry only to have one night there this time as although it is good for a stopover it is also an ideal base for exploring this part of the Loire.
One last point- if you like wine, be sure to try the Touraine Azay rose and whites as they are gorgeous!

We have just returned from a lovely 14 day stay there with another couple also in a 'van, and the site was exactly as described by most people, and was exactly what we were looking for. One bloc sanitaire was closed for refurb, but there were two others available (no need for tokens as another reviewer states - that's for non-campers). Our nearest shower block had a problem with the showers, but this was resolved within a couple of days.
The grass was a bit overgrown and unkempt - we thought this was down to the higher rainfall that they have experienced this year, but we later found out that the man on the mower had got a little too close to the Indre and fallen in - together with the mower! He was back on it after a few days.
You can choose your own pitch, either fully shaded, part shaded (as we did) or there are some open pitches.
As has been stated, the town is only a 5 min walk, and contains eating establishments to suit every pocket.
All-in-all, a lovely site, with a lovely small town (with chateau) within walking distance and plenty to do/see. Not the cheapest of municipal sites in France (€16. 70 June - 18. 10 July)but well worth it in the area. We were lucky with the weather with rain only on the last friday and saturday, so a lovely holiday.

Stayed here for one night only. Bureau closes at 16. 30 so site yourself and pay before 11. 00. Main toilet block close for renovation. Other small one ran out of hot water by 20. 00 and no hot water in the morning. Whole site got a feeling of neglect.
We were not aware that the other toilet block by main entrance was in use but you had to buy tokens for this!WIFI available but you need the code, which you can only get during the limited hours of the bureau being open!
Complained, my wife speaks excellent French, on playing our bill, 16. 60 Euro! We were given a complaints form which strangely enough were in a pile at the front of the desk!
Not recommended, the worst and most expensive municipal site we stayed on during our 5 week tour.

For our first time to France, this campsite has persuaded us to return next year. Although there was no way to book online, it was very easy to turn up as there were plenty of spaces. A mixture of those on site were there for longer breaks as well as those overnighting.
The price was about 11 euros a night, the pitches good sized for our 6 man tent and well shaded by trees.
Facilities:
The washing facilities were cleaned twice daily. The showers were sometimes cold, unfortunately.
A drive on Bakery arrives for an hour in the morning, but it only a 5 minute walk into the little town. There is a Carrefour supermarket very close by as well. You have free access to the municpal swimming pool right next door to the camp site. Although male bathers beware. The French only allow you to wear *unfeasibly small speedos* - no shorts allowed! There is river through the campsite where you can fish - our French neighbour cooked us some fish he caught 2 or 3 times during the trip - delicious!
A fabulous spot for touring around the region either by bike or car. We'd highly recommend it. Loved it.

Great location, shade from trees, riverside, chateau across river.
Free access to municipal swimming pool next door (pick up ticket from campsite reception).
Facilities cleaned regularly; got a bit 'muddy footprinty' after rain but were cleaned soon after. Bread van arrives each morning, good restaurants within 5 mins walk.
Quiet each night by about 10:30pm (can hear music from show in chateau grounds 6:30-10:00 or so, but not intrusive).
Obviously loads of lovely chateaux nearby, but also walks, cycling, canoeing etc.

The wife and I were looking to book a campsite for a 4 night stay on our way down to the Pyrenees. This ticked all the boxes – approx a 5 hours drive from Le Havre, easy access from the motorway etc. There was no need to book, we just turned up, pitched and paid on departure. Nice flat pitches (but not the perfect bowling green type) with plenty of shade or sun. Toilet facilities were clean and the showers hot. Lovely riverside location with a relaxed atmosphere. The town is only a short walk around the corner and had a nice selection of shops, bars and restaurants. There was a market in the central car park during our stay. The chateau is also in the town and had an evening show running during our visit – a weird mix of comedy, circus and theatre – which was surprisingly entertaining. Getting around the local area was easy as the roads were quiet. Driving along the Loire River a highlight for me. Easy access to the motorways on departure made it a good start to the day’s drive south. I would definitely use this campsite again and very reasonably priced.

This is a medium sized site on the edge of the pretty town of Azay Le Rideau, about ten miles south east of Tours.
Brilliant campsite. In chosing a couple of sites in the Loire area for our holiday it was obvious that there were lots of good options, but we're so pleased we opted for Le Sabot.
Its a municipal site in a perfect location for touring/visiting the sites of the loire valley. Talk about how a site should feel. The site runs directly along side the Indre river in a natural looking environment with large pitches and you are given the choice on arrival of where you want to camp. It felt just right from the off. Reception staff were very helpful.
There are three separate toilet/shower facilities which were in a decent/good condition throughout our stay. There is piped music too! You need your own lool roll. Additional dish washing facilities are distributed around the site which is handy.
I was a bit worried in case the site was used as a stopover as I find the constant turnover a bit off putting. However the large majority of campers were settled in here for a longer period, and whilst there was some use as a stopover this was fairly minimal. This makes absolute sense. You cant go wrong with a site offering such value, exceptional location and a relaxing environment. There arent a big range of facilities on site so that may not suit all, but you get access to the swimming pool directly adjacent to the site which seemed popular with families.
The handsome town with its chateau is a five minute walk away and happily isnt too touristy. There are several restaurants, bars and cafes.
Without question we'll be coming back here again.

We were disappointed in this site after reading the previous reviews.
We couldn't work out where anything was (yes, we do speak French) and only found the rubbish bins by asking others.
The mains hookup posts were very rickety and suspect - of the 3 by our pitch, 1 was reverse polarity, 1 had no earth connected, and the 3rd was OK.
There were are a lot of overhanging tree branches on the paths through the site which made it very difficult to negotiate with a caravan and bikes on the roof of the car.
The whole site had a feeling of not being looked after, and at €25 for a night, was expensive for a municipal.

I was going to write a report on this site, but Longcol has said it all - his review is absolutely spot on and correct.
It's the sort of spacious and efficient Municipal site that has just never existed in Britain - which makes touring in France so much more of a pleasure than holidays at home, where some sites are fully booked months and months in advance.
Yes, we like Azay le Rideau too.

Our first visit to this site in 18 years (first was on our honeymoon in 1987) and it still delighted us.
This site is ideal for visiting the chateaux west of Tours - Azay itself, Saumur, Chinon, Villandry, Usse, Langais - and now with the motorway extensions the east - Chenonceau, Amboise, Blois, Chaumont etc.
It tends towards short stay - site hoppers or breaking a journey south - 3 days or so - but plenty round and about to keep people occupied for longer.
Like most municipals it doesn't have many on-site facilities - rather you are encouraged to use the local ones. A bread van comes each morning and one of the pizza places down the road delivers.
It is located on the banks of the Indre river next door to the chateau at Azay which many reckon to be the most beautiful in France (chateau screened by trees so can't be seen from the site). It is a gentle stroll to the centre of the village with its numerous restaurants - most well within the budget of a normal family.
A large Carrefour supermarket is easily accessible by car in two minutes - straight across the mini roundabout on the road out of the site, up the hill and right onto the by-pass.
The municipal open air swimming pool is next door and free to use for campers.
Plentiful well shaded sites - what were bushes when we first visited are now big trees - about 2/3 full when we visited in the height of the season - you can choose your own pitch. Pitches decent sized tending to large - EHU is 2 pin so you need an adapter. Good clean toilet blocks / showers / washing facilities (segregated M/F).
Really mixed clientel - everything from backpackers with pop ups through to the largest camper van I've ever seen (more like a mobile village) and a mix of nationalities from all over Europe - and all ages from back packing students through to families with kids of various ages through to pensioners.
Excellent value - it really is about location, location, location - and a certain ambiance.
Oh - and don't forget to get a 5ltr box or two of the local Azay wine - the rose especially is excellent with a lunchtime salad or anything else for that matter (we decanted ours into empty water bottles to put in the fridge - it needs to be served chilled).
