Having always loved camping, the hubby and I returned to it (slightly rusty) after a four year break. With two 'junior campers'! We booked very late and were pleased to find a campsite with space to accommodate us over the jubilee weekend (albeit without electric hookup - they were all booked).
Very first impressions were not helped by the grey weather and initially I was unimpressed by the 'car park' at the top of the site - it was next to a large barn with farm vehicles in various states of disrepair. However this was very soon forgotten as I saw rest of the site and the welcome that we received from the owner. We explained that our 16 month and four year old children had never been camping before and we were concerned that they may disturb others at night, but he was very helpful and suggested the best places for us to pitch. As it turned out, the little cherubs were fine!
Everyone else on the site were situated on the hookup pitches and we had the whole 'meadow' to ourselves. We chose to camp at the bottom of the field (a beautiful spot and relatively flat - a large part of the meadow is sloping but several flat areas can be found). The fishing ponds were an interesting and attractive feature, even though we don't fish. The owner made sure he warned us about the dangers (and depth) of the ponds.
The toilet/shower block was on the opposite side of the field, but as this is a relatively small site, it is quickly accessible from everywhere. The block was clean, well maintained and fully functional. The 'family size' private cubicles were useful. The waste disposal, rubbish and recycling points were also situated there. Drinking water points were found throughout the site.
The road was quiet, surrounding area was beautiful and the site within easy reach of Abergavenny, Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye. The Walnut Tree Inn (restaurant) is nearby.
We thoroughly enjoyed our three days, despite pouring rain and it was a great start to our future family camping. We are surprised that this site is not busier and would definitely make a return visit.

We stayed here for two nights in mid September. We arrived on a rainy evening and were greeted warmly - we were able to pitch pretty much anywhere we wanted as there was only one caravan there (we chose a pitch near to the toilet block).
Pitches were level and the location is lovely, a great setting, we were able to sit and watch the sunset in the trees and complete peace and quiet.
The road nearby is not very busy so doesn't disturb you. The toilet block and shower rooms were clean, with free hot showers and plenty of space.
The location was great for Abergavenny food festival (about 15 mins drive) and also for exploring the castles nerby at Skenfrith and Grosmont - the pub at Grosmont is well worth a look in as well, nice pub grub and friendly atmosphere.
We had a lovely time and will be back in spring.

Have just spent the weekend at the Newlands Caravan Camping & Fishery Site in Cross Ash. We chose the site because it looked secluded and relaxed - we weren't disappointed! The site is set in beautiful rolling countryside with very little traffic heard from the main road.
It's a great spot to locate yourself if thinking of walking or visiting the 3 castles of Skenfrith, White & Grosmont which we hadn't planned and only realised through reading the excellent local information posted on the wall in the utility room (2 sinks, lots of hot water, clean and tidy with maps of local information for you to take)
Brian, the campsite owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful with directions and general chit chat about places to visit, which pubs were best and more.
The wet room facilities at the site were really good and I can honestly say the best shower I've had on a campsite for as long as I can remember - plenty of hot water with the rooms including a toilet and easily big enough for a parent with a child or 2 if need be.
Drinking water was easily accessible and there was also a recycling point which put a tick firmly in my box of must haves.
We had a really great time and would definitely return to the Newlands again, lovely spot, lovely owner in great surroundings - thanks for everything! Susannah & Andy (the newly wed's in the battered blue V W)

Booked 3 nights here to try out our new caravan, we got lost on the way to the site, we rang the owner and he gave us directions.
We arrived in the pouring down rain to be greeted by Brian the owner he had stood at the gate for some time making sure we found the site ok.
He showed us to the pitches and let us take our pick, still pouring with rain we unhooked caravan and the motor mover failed Brian was there to help us site the caravan.
Wet rooms were great with toilet and sink and loads of space and very clean. A great place for a chill out, great people and a great location would recommend this site to anyone who wants a quiet few days away.

My-self and my other half have just returned home from a 4 night stay camping at newlands and at first when we arrived it didn't look appealing but when we were personally shown around by the owner it started to look a lot better, the value for money is excellent a lot cheaper then other sites.
The shower rooms are amazing, clean and tidy and I loved the fact the toilet and sink are in the same room lots of space, well looked after and the great thing is they're free!
The field is massive to camp on and we had the choice of where to camp, so we choose right down the bottom by the trees which was just what we wanted, peaceful and quiet.
The other half loved the fact he could get up in the morning then walk straight to the fishing pool, which is well stocked with various fish from goldfish to 11lb+ carp which he caught (photos to prove it!). Overall we were very pleased with the site and the owner was very friendly, we would go back again.
If your looking for a nice quiet area where you can relax then this is the place. The nearest town is approx 15 minutes away by car and there's lots to do in the surrounding area from walks to castles also big pit is amazing we were both blown away by that place.

I came across the Newlands whilst I was working in the area and thought how quiet and piece full it looked, well we weren't disappointed.
When my wife and I arrived along with our 10 year old daughter we were greeted with a smile from Brian who showed us the site and asked where we'd like to pitch up. Fortunately we had a good choice, so got a nice sheltered spot under the trees. The shower rooms are great as they're large with toilet and basin so you have plenty of privacy, no queuing for the toilet then having to queue for a shower, the toilets to are separate rooms not Chipboard cubicles ! !
If your not up for the fishing you could try 'The Big Pit' at Blaenafon near Abergavenny it's well worth the visit or Caerleon's Roman fortress plus they're FREE !
If you fancy a nice home cooked meal out we found The Skirrid Mountain Inn that's situated in Llanvihangel Crucorney; a small village just off the A465; approximately 5 miles north from the centre of Abergavenny or 6/7 miles over the hill from Newlands lovely food and cheap enough too and steeped in history.
I would highly recommend The Newlands to anyone, so Happy camping.
Thank you Brian and Carol, oh and of coarse Jake the Pup for a great stay, hopefully we'll see you soon !

We stayed here for 6 nights over the May day bank holiday week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The site is peaceful (apart from the sheep!) - we heard owls at night and saw buzzards hovering during the day.
There are wet rooms with a toilet, sink and shower (free & nice and hot), separate toilets, plus a washing up room with 2 large sinks. There is also an information area with details of local attractions and a nice walk laid out for you if you don’t want to venture too far.
The fishing was good – carp, tench and goldfish seem to be the main things my other half caught.
The owner was very friendly and helpful – even brought us cake one day :0)
Will definitely be going back!

Just come back from a long bank holiday weekend at Newlands. Upon arrival we were greeted by the site owner and told to take our pick of the pitches, there were only two other tents on the field so we pitched right at the bottom of the field, bank holiday weekend with as good as a field to ourselves, couldn't be any better, kids had loads of free space to explore.
I honestly couldn't believe our luck what a gem of a campsite, the facilities are all new and very functional, the shower rooms as stated before were large enough for me to take the three nippers with me to shower.
My husband & kids a go on the fishing lake and caught plenty of fish, ( punched bread, tench & carp mostly ). Although you have to pay extra for this it was well worth it, the kids love fishing.
The site is excellently placed for exploring Monmouth and Abergavenny, ( about the same distance to both ).
We'll definitely be going back, but I bet as soon as the word spreads, there's no chance we'll as good as have the field to ourselves again.

Just arrived home from a very relaxing week end spent at this little treasure of a site. On arrival we were greeted by the owner who made up feel very welcome to his site, helped us to choose the best pitch for our stay. The site has the most amazing views of the valley. All pitchs are with hard standing electric and water tap and well spaced. There was 2 toilets both very clean, and also 2/3 wet rooms again very clean and very large so good for familys. As a well travelled fisherman I found the 2 coarse lakes well stocked with all breds of fish, I caught around 40 fish all sizes and at £6.00 a day well worth the money. We would recommend this site to other fisherman and wifes that like sitting and relaxing, or shopping as my wife spent a day in Monmouth and a morning looking around Ross on Wye Labels outlet. Hope to return soon to this fab site.
