Quite a mixed verdict of this campsite. We've stayed with Park Resorts before but found this to be very outdated on the whole. Don't know if this is to do with it being in the IOW, but feel there was room for improvements. The reception staff were lovely and helpful, very flexible letting you pitch where you wanted. They did inform us that one of the shower blocks had NO hot water, to go to the other.

The toilets/showers/washing area was not good. Showers were very temperamental and we had to walk a way to use the laundry facilities.

We were able to use the facilities on the next campsite as it was another Park resort which helped.

If it wasn't for the beautiful swimming pools and the sun was shining it helped our holiday at Landguard. The entertainment at night was hit n miss. We didn't go to the children's facilities scheduled during the day so we cannot comment on them.

The IOW is a beautiful place, with lots to do close by to wherever you stay. I was a little disappointed with Landguard.

Picked this site for it's location on the Island, which was an ideal base for visiting many of the attractions available.

We have a twin axle tourer and called in advance to check the site was suitable, and booked a hardstanding electric pitch. Access to this site is via a single track road, with one passing place, our holiday started meeting a car which wouldn't reverse! Although with arrival and departure times not adhered to because of ferry crossings I can image this can be quite hectic.

When we made it to reception, there was no stopping places, so we stopped, blocking the road, to find out which pitch to go to, we were told to choose a pitch and report back. We chose pitch 147, the only hardstanding available and backed the caravan on, it was tight and the roads are very narrow. Our caravan covered the hardstanding completely, so if your tourer is over 23ft don't pay the extra for a hardstand.

We found the park to be generally run-down, and unkept. The rubbish bins were overflowing and all the units seemed very close together, within a few steps of our awning was a windbreaker marking off the motorhome pitch next door, we felt we had no space.

The shower blocks were extremely old and not reasonably clean, the floor was muddy. Staff on site tried to keep them up together but they are worn out, with no entrance doors and tiles missing. The water was hot, and pressure good although you had to keep pushing the button.

After two nights staying, we moved to an alternative site, units pitch at this park at all hours of the night and listening to an awning being put up at 2:30am was not for us. They really need a late night arrival area.

Overall great location, but site needs better access, pitching, and toilet/shower block.

Will return to the Island next year but not this site. Recommend Robin Hill, and the electric woods are fantastic, our children loved Seaview Wildlife encounter.

We stayed at Landguard again as the site is within easy reach of the beach.

The site is quite basic and is one of Park Resorts smaller locations, which means it doesn't get any money spent of it (same faults year after year).

Cleaning of units is rushed and more attention is needed, but first thing we usually do is wash everything we are likely to use and put it to one side!

The car park is not big enough for the number of units on site, and you can not park by your van, which is nice as its quieter and safer for children to play.

The entertainment is ok, Bingo rules most of the time, and the schedule is non-existant, would be better if they published times for things asi don't want to be sat in the clubhouse at 9:30 waiting for the children's games to finish before the adult acts begin.

Children love the sites mascots and the staff know how to get the kids involved.

Great location to explore the Isle of Wight from!

We have requested certain plots before and these have always bee honoured, have always paid at least 50% less than advertised and will continue returning until its too expensive! Looking at sites in France, and many are less per week in August than uk locations (not just Park Resorts locations)

We camped in our touring caravan at Landguard for the first fortnight of the summer hols (they also have an extensive site of statics and lodges). We paid mostly using Tesco reward vouchers, making it very affordable for a 2 week, high season family holiday. Bearing in mind this is a Park Resorts location, you have to recognise that it is marketed in a certain way & run to a formula. If that formula doesn't happen to suit you then maybe you should be looking elsewhere. Having said that, Landguard was a private site up until a few years ago so also has a 'pre-park-resorts' legacy which marginally takes the edge off the naff-ness of some of that!

All in all, we really enjoyed our week, felt it was good value, and are likely to go back. We have had friends who stayed in the lodges / log cabins - also had a fantastic time and couldn't fault it.

Positives - for camping the pitches were well spaced (more space than other Park resorts sites we have used) and with sufficient hedging, trees etc to give shade, some privacy & a pleasant atmosphere, and the site was well maintained (tidy, grass cut, bins emptied etc)

The touring wardens were very helpful & hardworking (constantly seeing them litter picking) and responded to reports of showers not working etc

The camping field felt very safe for the kids that week, and they made loads of friends and learnt to ride their bikes on their own on the tarmacked roadways

It was about a 20min walk to the beach and a 10 min walk to Lidl's (which was actually excellent), 15 mins to a large Co-op. You could probably walk to the Morrisson's as well - about 5 mins by car.

The entertainment on site isn't much of a draw for us, but you could use the larger Entertainment complex at the neighbouring site at Lower Hyde if you like that sort of thing.

The site had a nice indoor pool which was bath-water hot, and an outside pool in need of some TLC

Negatives - for touring - the shower/ toilet blocks need a major refurb - they were a bit grim, also needed more regular and thorough cleaning

For touring - the roadway down to the site is narrow & you wouldn't be able to pass 2 caravans by each other (I guess hence rule about departures by 10am and arrivals after 2pm)

Also trees on the touring field were close to the roadways making manouvering caravans when pitches were full a bit more awkward.

The entertainment is fairly naff (but not our sort of thing, anyway) and bar prices are shocking (£4. 50 for pint of Magners).

Food at the cafe/ restaurant is edible and cheap but not nice - seek out a decent pub & enjoy a view at the same time!

The pool was a bit murky, the changing rooms were tiny and I wasn't that impressed with the lifeguards - didn't seem too interested in stopping physical horseplay between adults & big kids happening in the shallow / baby end.

- Summary - we have been to the I of W about 6 times now and WILL go again. If our budget means that we have to book using Tesco clubcard vouchers again, then we will return to camp at Landguard. Otherwise I have to say that we have grown out of Park resorts and will probably look for a privately run site with no 'entertainment programme' and spend the week enjoying what the ISLAND actually has to offer, rather than what Park Resorts seem to think people are into.

We have just arrived back from a fantastic 7 nights on the Isle of Wight. We stayed at Landguard Park. We have a larger tent so called the site about a month ago to tell them we had a big tent to be told that it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived at about 10. 00 am as we caught an early ferry and thought we would check in and wait for 12. 00 until we could pitch. We were told that the people on the pitch we had been allocated hadn't even woken up yet but there were lots of other pitches available. We could pick one we liked the look of and stay there. We picked pitch 125. At the top of a slight slope and next to the cut through to Lower Hyde park, under the shade of a bank of trees sounded good to us. We were also told that they never sent anyone to 126 as the slope was to great to pitch a tent or caravan so we had space out the front for the kids to play.

I was slightly apprehensive about the toilet facilities after reading some reviews but found them to be clean and adequate for my needs - but then again all we really want is a loo and handbasin and a shower that is warm. Could do with a lick of paint or some new tiles but perfectly serviceable as long as you don't expect 5* luxury.

We oitched the tent and went to explore the site. The kids 4 & 9 loved the playground and the arcade. The two swimming pools also went down a treat. The indoor one was heated to 30 degrees which is good for me as I hate cold swimming pools. My son braved the outdoor pool but only for about 30 seconds. The small on site shop stocked basic essentials at very reasonable prices. Pint of Milk 49p which is great for those times when you drink too much tea and forget to buy milk!.

We found the surrounding area of Shanklin a quaint seaside town but beware the one way system that will have you driving a round in circles. Take a sat nav or a map! We visited the club house at Landguard n two occasions and both were very very warm. The team stars were obviously doing their best with a limited space. I think this club actually suffers from being associated with Lower Hyde which has a massive club house complex as it means that all the resources are directed at LH and not Landguard but it was only a short walk so we decided to investigate. The Kids had a fabulous time dancing and that meant the adults had a good time too.

All too soon it came time to pack up and go home. We would definitely visit Landguard again as it offered a good base for us to explore the island.

We have just arrived home from two weeks at this site with mixed feelings of it.

Firstly I must echo the previous comments regarding the toilet/shower facilities, seems not much has changed as they are very poor.

Having requested a large pitch when booking it was disappointing to be given one of the smallest (although they are all supposed to be the same size) and after experimenting with the pitching of our caravan we eventually asked for another pitch.

The wardens were very helpful and we were offered a choice of several alternatives, one of which we eventually spent two pleasant weeks on.

The children enjoyed the indoor and outdoor pools as the weather has been very kind however I cant really comment on the club as I only spent one evening with the chap next door having a pint or two!

Again as previously mentioned it can be very difficult getting to your pitch and will test your driving/manoeuvring skills if your towing a caravan.

This could be a very nice site but a lack of investment leaves it looking dated and tired.

We visited Languard in May 2011, for five nights. We got a bargain with the ferry crossing, as we booked this directly with the park and they have concessionary fees when the accomodation & ferry are booked together.

Upon arriving, the small reception area in the touring park was empty. There was a sign in the window stating they'd be back in 5 minutes, but after waiting about 15 mins we phoned the main office no and someone came down! We were allocated a pitch, but on checking it out, we were disappointed to find it was covered in pinecones from a nearby tree. We figured it wouldn't be too comfy, or practical, setting up on top of those, so we went back to reception and were basically told we could choose where we liked from a number of pitches.

We chose a pitch which was backed by hedges. The pitch itself was grassy, level and spacious (We've got a Montana 6, so a large tent). We had no problems with the EHU - all worked okay - and there was a water tap/drain and rubbish bin nearby.

There were two toilet/shower blocks, both an equal distance from our tent; and also a small kiddies play area.

Toilets did tend to get grubby by the evenings, but that was more other campers littering and not picking up after themselves, than the campsites fault! Showers were adequate with hot water, although I would recommend taking flip-flops to wear in the shower as the floors did tend to be a bit grubby occasionally.

The reception also had freezer facilities for ice-blocks, but I did have to phone the main office many times to ask someone to come down so that I could access the freezer, as the reception was unoccupied and locked up! I think this was probably due to being out of season though.

The facilities (clubhouse, bigger playarea, shop, swimming pool) were a short walk from the touring field - across a lane and through a pathway. Probably 5 mins walk, although it would be difficult for wheelchair/pushchair users due to being a gravel path, in which case you could walk the road way but it would take longer.

The clubhouse was small, but with good entertainment. Drinks were expensive though - approx £3. 80 for a Bulmers pear cider!

The swimming pool was nice, with good changing facilities. Although again it was small compared to the size of the site and I can imagine in high season it would be very overcrowded.

Thankfully we had a day of beautiful weather and managed to use the outside pool. Which was lovely! It was like being in Spain!

Overall, we would visit again. Although I do wonder if the facilities would cope in high season?

There was also a Lidl nearby, but most things were driving distance, rather than walking.

It was a fantastic base for an Isle of Wight holiday though and we had lots of nice days out to Robin Hill, Blckgang Chine etc.

This was our third visit to this site, I like the touring section and as said before it is quite narrow in places to go and find your pitch.

I think it works out very expensive for what your getting because the toilet block isnt that great and the other Park Resorts sites have far better blocks and really I wouldn't pay that much if I hadnt have used Tesco vouchers for most of it. The pitch we had this year was quite dry and dusty but the wet weather we had soon grassed it up a bit by the time we left. It was so wet the that an 8ft hole had appeared in the Lower Hyde site around the corner.

We had many phone calls before we went to try and get wightlink and Park resorts to have the same ferry times and it seemed a long time before they got it right.

The location is good and when the weather is better we walk to the beach. We usually have a meal at the pub on the front 'the Steamer Inn' not bad there.

The toilet block was grubby and had broken tiles the toilets were often blocked.

Th Mix club for teenagers is non existent. My children went but were told there weren't enough Kids. We asked for a Mix programme as it said to do in the brochure but were told there isn't one this year so no wonder kids didn't turn up!

We tried to book for the sea jets but were told they weren't working I questioned how many they had and were they all out of order I was told yes they were, seemed strange to me.

The remote controlled hovercrafts sounded fun until you realise there was only 1 for all the kids at both parks to have a go with. No archery. No battle of the bands. Then they decided to resurface the outdoor sports area so that was out of bounds for 2 days! This was the only place for the older kids to go as nothing else was on offer.

The camp was noisy at night I booked this one as it said it was the quieter of the 2 camps but the camping area is the main route through to Lower Hyde so you have loud drunks walking past at all hours, then service golf buggies going past early the next morning. We also had 3 nights of people having parties on the site.

We visited Languard in June 2008 in a mobile home and having seen what appeared to be a charming campsite, decided to return with the tent in 2009 for 6 days. The pitches are large and pleasant, although we had the aforementioned swing tied to a tree on our pitch and all the kids hung around it all evening. My wife wouldn't let me cut it down, said I was a grumpy old git! The indoor pool as a godsend, as the weather wasn't great and they used it every day. The outdoor pool was freezing, but the indoor one was fine. Entertainment was poor, but the bar area was OK when wanting to get out of the rain. I can only echo the other reviews about the facilities. Very old toilet and shower blocks, with mess everywhere, loo roll everywhere, excrement on the walls, etc. Only cleaned once a day by a lad. One of the toilet blocks was closed for all but one of the days we were there due to toilets being stuffed full of loo roll and overflowing, and it took 4 days to fix. The other problem was the noise at night. Despite a no groups policy there were several groups of drunk teenagers. Radios and TVs were on until 2am or 3am some nights. We had to fetch security from the main site on more than one occasion (no dedicated campsite security), and they did come over, but as soon as they went the noise started up again. Shanklin and the Isle of Wight are beautiful, so don't let it put you off visiting the island.
