As a glance through my previous reviews will show, I prefer small basic campsites to large holiday parks. Michelcombe certainly falls within the first category - it is small and very basic.

As an aside, the site has two wooden Shepherd's Huts - they are rather like enlarged camping pods and are available to hire (so are ready-pitched bell tents).

Michelcombe Farm is situated on two levels in a secluded steep-sided valley on the edge of Dartmoor a few miles west of Ashburton. It is owned by the family who farm the land and is run by their friendly and helpful daughter. The family live in the nearby farmhouse.

The site advertises 15 pitches each with room for a family tent and a vehicle. You can park one car beside your tent and there is a parking area for extra cars. The pitch boundaries are not marked out but each pitch is numbered. Campfires are allowed in the designated stone or metal pits and firewood can be bought from the farm.

The tariff is £7 per person per night plus £3 for under-12 children (infants are free) and £2 for dogs. I think this is reasonable, even given the rather limited and basic facilities.

During my visit, as well as a dozen or so tents there were a couple of campervans on site. However, I doubt if access would be easy for larger motorhomes or towed caravans. I didn't see any EHU points on any of the pitches.

The valley is heavily wooded and thus sheltered from the wind; however, that also means some pitches remain in shade for much of the day. The steep valley and the trees impart an enclosed intimacy which most people will like. However, somewhat to my surprise, I found the hemmed-in feeling unsettling and claustrophobic.

Although my visit was for only one night and spur-of-the-moment, I phoned first and was assured of a pitch. Pre-booking by phone is simple and you can also book online or by post. I wasn't given a pitch number and on arrival it was not very obvious where to camp. However, I texted the owner and her reply was to pitch my tent wherever there was space.

The smaller upper field was nearly full so I found a spot on the larger lower field. The ground is slightly undulating on the lower field but flat places can be found on most pitches.

The soil is soft (and very damp despite a prolonged period of dry warm weather) but it is also full of stones so rock pegs and a decent hammer are needed. I doubt if the lower field drains well in wet weather (it straddles the streambed) and this could cause problems for vehicles, especially as it is a steep pull up from lower field. There were muddy wheel-tracks in the field despite the weather.

Both fields have their own drinking water tap. The facilities - showers, toilets, dish-wash sinks, utility room with fridge and freezer - are housed in a shed just beyond the upper field. During my stay the facilities were kept clean and supplies were replenished. There is one toilet and one shower each for men and women - this initially struck me as not enough capacity but, in fairness, I did not have to queue even though the site was fairly full. The water in the dish-washing area was hot but the shower wasn't very warm first thing in the morning.

This is not the sort of campsite to attract rowdy groups and the owners live on site so, as you might expect, it is very quiet at night. On the night I stayed, the only disturbances were some puppies at the farm which barked in the night and the soaring sonorities of the dawn chorus the next morning - but there are far worse sounds than birdsong to wake up to.

For Dartmoor-bound walkers, Michelcombe Farm Campsite is very well situated. It is barely ten minutes up a bridleway to open moorland; from there, an hour's brisk walk leads to Ryder's Hill which is the highest point on the south moor.

In summary, this is a nice little campsite with a traditional feel in a superb location. Although the facilities are a bit sparse for the potential number of campers, it will appeal to anyone who enjoys old-fashioned camping and getting away from it all.

My Wife me and our dog went to the site. Spent 4 nights. Good basic site. If you go there make sure you take rock pegs (ground is quite rocky). Every pitch has a fire pit to use. There is 1 shower and toilet for male and 1 female. We enjoyed good weather and the site was just as we like, no street light, no traffic, nice little stream to keep wine/beer cool or food. We will go there again. The owner was friendly and the local pubs good, we liked the Tradesman's arms about 2mile away, good food and large portions. Like I said we will use it again maybe next year.

Perfect site for those who like 'au naturel' camping. Sheltered valley at end of lane, so really away from it all. Great walks and not one, but two really good pubs approx 15 mins walk away. Helpful, charming owner. Only two loos (one M, one F) so likely to be queues when busy, but all tidy and clean. Shower fine and useful utility room with freezer and fridge, though again, likely to be first come first served for space in there when busy.

The owner has mini honesty shop, including her own lamb burgers, but we didn't notice this until we left - pushy selling is definitely not the style here!

Lovely part of Dartmoor, with both high moor and the softer edges of Dartmoor nearby.

Holne (10 mins walk uphill from site) has excellent community shop and tea room which isn't advertised at the site, but is v useful. Need to know opening hours though as staffed by volunteers

If you want all the modern conveniences then don't visit this site. If you want wild camping with the benefit of a loo and hot shower this is perfection! Washing up facilities now added with single loo and shower for ladies and gents. Absolute serenity, beautiful location and walks atraight on the the moor. Owner very helpful. Site level but access is on gravel and you have to cross a stream to get to the lower level of the site, tricky on my motorcycle!

Small campsite hidden away down country lanes - brilliant.

Good directions to the site were passed by email, this also gave you your confirmation and which pitch you were on.

Each pitch had its own fire pit - you can also obtain firewood from the site.

Owners were friendly and helpful - popped round in the evening to pick up any campfees from new arrivals.

Toilets were kept clean - only one toilet/shower per sex but didn't have to queue even though it was fairly busy. Addition to the 2011 review there is now washing up facilities and a fridge/freezer available to use.

Pub is down the road (a good 10 minute walk).

Village shops in area - probably nearest supermarket in Ashburton and probably Newton Abbot for more choice.

Moors are on the doorstep.

I will be returning at a later date

We were 5 men aged 15 - 67 and had a great stay. Well hidden campsite - which is what we wanted - directions received on email a couple of days prior were enough.

We were told to pitch where we liked so put our 2 tents on pitch 5 and parked the cars about 75 yards away. Small campsite, 5 pitches in our area and then a football field size area across the stream.

Only 2 showers and toilets - 1 for each sex. We stayed over BH and we didn't have to queue. Facilities were clean, hot and free.

We paid £60 for 2 tents and 3 nights - bargain in my eyes.

Pub a good 10 minute walk away, but worth it.

Location is right on the Moors.

We had a good stay, probably won't go again - on a tour of all National Parks so won't get around to it, and Pub just too far away for us.

If you are looking for visits as well as hiking, be sure to give Dartmoor Prison Museum a miss, waste of 5 minutes.

We stayed for 4 nights and thought it was great! Lovely secluded location, ample fire wood supplied, drinking water and a short walk away from 2 villages/pubs.

There are some great local walks. It is also a very friendly camp site.

The only negative is there is only one toilet and one shower, though these were clean and worked well, if the camp site becomes more popular they will need at least another toilet.

The hot water tap on the sink did not work. No washing up facilities. Would stay again.
