Chantry farm is a really lovely small campsite!

The location is great as it is easy to get to by road (although the actual track to the campsite is pretty narrow and rough) or bus from Brighton. But once you are there you feel as is you are in the middle of nowhere with stunning downland views in all directions. In the field where our tent was we were treated to lovely sunrises over the hills each morning. The other field (where the rather cute shepherd's hut is) has the most stunning view of the sunsets over the weald and downland. It is rare to be able to witness such wonderful views and not worry that you have hurry back to your tent before darkness falls.

The land backs on to the the national trust area of the South Downs and there are many nice walks (and pubs) in the surrounding area. We found it a good location for rambling over the local area and there are routes of various difficulties to choose from. On this point Beki (the owner) was very helpful in suggesting nice places to aim for and generally giving us some local knowledge.

The facilities are rustic (one compost toilet and a gas burner to heat up water for washing with a small wash area in the barn) but they suited us and allowed us to feel 'back to nature' whilst still having modern conveniences. The water comes from a private bore hole and tasted lovely and fresh! The compost toilet was very pleasant, clean and easy to use. The site allows campfires and has fire pits on each of the tent pitches, and sells good boxes of wood with kindling and larger logs to keep you going. There were only three pitches in our field and they were nicely spaced out so you felt you had plenty of room. The pitches themselves are kept neat and mown but the rest of the meadow was full of wild flowers and butterflies which was beautiful.

Because it is so small, you really feel like you are getting away from things and the owners managed to balance being helpful and welcoming with leaving us alone to do our own thing.

The only (minor) down sides were:-

The A23 can be heard from the campsite, but it is is a gentle constant that you quickly get used to.

If you are not happy with rustic campsite this one might not be for you (although if you give it a go it might be the one to convert you)

There isn't a shop very close by so make sure you have your supplies with you.

It is a little bit more expensive than more standard campsites where they pack you in.

Having said that these are the same points which attracted us to the site in the first place. If I was heading back to this area I would definitely come back to this lovely campsite, and have recommended it to my friends who live closer.

We stayed here in July and had an amazing weekend. The Shepherds Hut was cosy, clean, and comfortable.

The whole site is beautiful and we were made to feel very welcome. The green loo was immaculately clean the whole time, and the bathroom yurt was the best way to wash!

First heat up a big pot of water on the stove, strip off, splash around, pop your head out the top of the yurt and watch the sheep grazing nearby. Its simple and rustic. Its lovely.

We will definitely be going back.

We stayed here at the beginning of July. The shephards hut was absolutely amazing. The weather wasn't great, but being in the hut was perfect and cosy. It has everything you need in it. The bed, pillows and duvet were so comfortable! It was very clean, as was the green loo on the site.

It is positioned perfectly for lovely walks on the south downs, and the views were stunning!

Beki, the owner, was so accommodating she made us feel so welcome and made sure we had everything we needed!

Amazing place to stay. It's got to be experienced.

There is certainly a special energy about the space and wonderful to see what is being made of it.

The views are fantastic and the nearby walks are truly breathtaking! We came from Brighton, just about a 15 minutes drive, but it felt like we were a million miles away ~

Really cosy Shepherds hut with a lovely little wood burner inside - saw an owl swoop by the window, just after a gorgeous sunset.

The owner was very friendly, helpful and makes some great tea's and incense from the local nature.

It was a great weekend away!
