Only stayed one night as we were looking for an overnight stop between rowing regattas.
If you love your camping natural this place is fab. Small, quiet, clean and as every good camp site is, a work in progress. Loved the Loo, showers and changing room. Good views. Lovely owners. Delicious fresh eggs.
Nice communal fire pit.

Had a great stay here recently. 3 guys with a campervan, tent and our road bikes.
Facilities were as stated. Loved the changing room especially and outdoor shower which was nice and hot. Liked the compost loo too, very clean. Only thing was no hot water for washing up, but not an issue really.
The main thing which stood out was the helpfulness of couple who run it. We didn't have many plans and they succeeded in filling our days with good trips and local tips.
In terms of location, we found it great on the bikes. Can shoot down to Marazion and Penzance in no time. St Ives is only a few miles away, on the coastal route via the nearby iron-age settlement. It is surrounded by hilly ascents though, so not easy to pop down and back. The pub is a 3 minute walk away and is really good.
I thought the views were great and personally prefer turbines to power stations and climate change. No evidence of them causing weather 'havoc' during our stay :)

We absolutely loved Ash Farm Campsite!
This year we wanted to stay somewhere small and quiet (hard to find in Cornwall during the Summer) that also had decent facilities, was good value for money and in a superb location.
Ash Farm nailed it in its own way!
The site was only big enough for 6-8 pitches, which suited us fine as we prefer the quiet, and is situated in walking distance of Penzance. The campsite is located next to an old, and new, water reservoir. Aside from a chain link fence sectioning off the new reservoir (which has pretty fairy lights and a washing line attached) you would not know. Victoria and Graham have cleverly used features from the old reservoir to their advantage, adding a little historic charm to the site. For example, the old water shed is now a cool, spacious changing room!
The compost toilet is a brilliant eco-friendly idea, although it can be a little smelly (did not bother us mind!) and I would recommend taking a torch at night as the steps can be difficult to make out.
We loved the outdoor shower, which was lovely and hot, but the pebbles can hurt your feet a little and if it's windy, the light can blow out on the boiler! But we had many a laugh over this!
We were a little disappointed at first that we could not have our own fire, but we had so much fun talking, cooking, and socialising over the communal fire, that we didn't mind.
There is a brilliant little pub down the road called 'The White Hart'- food's great, reasonably priced, lovely atmosphere and in crawling distance!
The location of the campsite is great for exploring the Penwith and Lizard peninsula. We visited Penzance, Marazion and St. Michael's Mount, Land's End, Lizard Point, St. Ives and Kynance Cove. And did a manner of things including hiking, driving a self-hire boat, horse riding on the beach and eating at The Tolcarne Inn (great seafood!) We stayed up to watch the Perseid meteor shower the first night. WOW! On a clear night you can see so many stars and even satellites! Something we will never forget as long we live.
The owner and the boys were all so welcoming and friendly that the campsite needs a mention just for their hospitality alone! We wish them all the very best and look forward to our return in the future.

Struggling to find the right words for this campsite, given the reviews above.
It’s not very family-orientated and we won’t be going back. In fact I would say this site is definitely not for families, which is why I’m writing this review.
I don’t want to be negative or put anyone off and the owner seemed very nice so perhaps it just wasn’t a good choice for us. The changing room is really lovely, though, and the shower was good and hot. The loo was a challenge.
However, I felt the term ‘wild’ had been used to describe ‘neglect', not natural wilderness (there’s a difference).
It may have been the indifferent weather, but overall it was not the wholesome experience I had looked forward to and felt relieved and not disappointed to have to leave after 3 days, (which we did for unrelated reasons).
There seem to be wind turbines everywhere in this part of Cornwall on the horizon which spoilt the view as they're rarely still and they play havoc with the weather as well as being ugly, creating their own pocket micro-climates everywhere. They're difficult to get used to. We've been coming to Cornwall every year for donkeys years but the beauty of the county seems seriously compromised, in this area at least and this site did little to dispel that impression. Might try elsewhere in future.
In the field, which was quite lumpy, there are some fairly level patches of grass by a wire fence which was ugly but helpfully strung with a washing line and fairy lights. Behind this, is the new current water reservoir. There is a ‘damp feel’ to the site compared to other windy sites we’ve been on - maybe an advantage when very hot?
The old reservoir section had paths, flowers and trees and a welcome pile of firewood (£3 per bag).
We were asked to leave the gate open to the short drive to the road during the day so the younger children had to be watched constantly (we closed the gate anyway in the end). The old reservoir still has a few feet of water in it and the door to it had an inadequate lock which was instantly broken by one of the children, posing a safety risk. It was difficult to relax after that for the adults, at least - the children enjoyed it.
The fire pit was a wonderful feature and we had a convivial few hours sitting round it before the rain came and drove us away. The owners live off site.
The children loved the horses but were not allowed into the enclosure to see the chickens - too dangerous - and no pigs in evidence. I think to call it a ‘farm’ is stretching a point somewhat.
The beaches are a minimum 3 miles away and we were camping with friends who didn’t have a car so had to get a bus. From the website, we had thought the beaches were closer – within walking distance (with children) e. G. 1 mile or so. But our mistake - should have checked more carefully.
It is a cheap tariff and perhaps you ‘get what you pay for’ in campsites as in everything – the overall lack of concern for safety for young children was the thing that made the holiday uncomfortable for us. We camp because its ‘free-range freedom’ for our city-bred children and yet found this site more nerve-wracking than at home – which is not like other experiences on other sites (have been camping with children for years).
However, it’s probably very enjoyable without children or extremely well-behaved/older ones that don’t want to explore, and with a car to get to the beach, especially if you’re not too bothered about natural beauty and wilderness. Fine for an overnight stop.
Trying to be fair - maybe we were just not well-equipped enough and expectations were too high? It felt like such hard work keeping the children safe and with 3. 5 miles to the nearest beach, it wasn’t a good choice for us. I felt nervous with the wire fence and atmosphere and very happy to leave but others have clearly had a far more positive experience.

Management response: I feel gutted that this family group of two mums and seven children felt the need to write such a review about our campsite and Cornwall. In response I would say we found their group particularly challenging on our small site and would agree that we were clearly not the right campsite for them, or indeed the right hosts. I had realised they were not happy and wanted me to know it, because they had written in our visitor's book. We value all comments, so I had tried to look at their comments in our visitor's book in a balanced fashion and draw out some positives and act on some of their frustrations about our site.
I do not feel we have earned such a caustic attack. Our site does not have manicured lawns, it is a paddock. We do not have a bar, or a games room, or an amusement arcade. The wooded glade was an overgrown wilderness when we acquired it, some of which we have now tamed and the old reservoir has a padlocked door across its entrance, but we had not intended it to be used as a climbing frame.
Our compost toilet is clean and far superior to Glastonbury (no offence to Glastonbury), but nevertheless a compost loo, just as it is portrayed in our site description and blog.
We are a "work in progress" in some respect, which is reflected in our tariff. We do not consider ourselves a 'cheap option', rather we consider the price fair, for our clean, but basic amenities. Other children who have camped with us have, enjoyed the tyre swing and played cricket, football, frisby etc on our site, but we are not really a place for children to wildly run amock.
As for the single wind turbine across the valley at Cucurrian and the two, in the distance at Rosevidney, I consider them graceful and elegant and hugely superior to the dirty concrete towers associated with other power stations, creating a clean energy for a clean county.
I am sorry this family group did not enjoy their stay with us but hope users of ukcampsite.Co.Uk will read the 'reviews and comments' page on our blog, to see what our many "happy" campers have to say about us, by way of balancing this very negative review. |

Ash Farm is a truly lovely campsite. It is in a superb location with far reaching views from the gate and the wooded picnic area, situated on top of the old water reservoir, towards St Michaels Mount, Marazion beach and Penzance.
It has a really good composting toilet, Family changing room, and a hot outdoor shower. It's a lovely experience to have a nice warm shower whilst looking up at clear blue skies and a leafy green canopy - quite the best shower experience I have ever had! The old water reservoir in the wooded glade is a real feature and is planted with an abundance of wild bluebells, pink campions and other stunning wild flowers. The owners have created a picnic area on top of this lovely reservoir, where you can enjoy the sun and views across Cornwall as far as Camborne and the coast.
Very friendly horses in the paddock next to the campsite belonging to the owners - nice to have a chat to them in the evening sun and feed them the occasional carrot!
Great pub in the village, an easy access to the beaches. Ideally situated.
Would definitely recommend.

My friend and I stayed at this campsite towards the end of September.
It was a lovely place. The location is excellent - there is a fantastic view of St Michael's Mount from just outside the front gate, but equally we managed to walk quite comfortably to St Ives in the day.
The shower is nice and hot, there is a compost toilet and a nice pub in the town for coffee.
The owners were really kind, coming to pick my friend and I up from the station as we were arriving on the last train from London. They even went to the trouble to come out and help us make a fire as we were struggling!
Thanks for your kindness and hospitality, an excellent campsite with a lovely view and definitely recommended.

Met up with a group of friends for an August Bank Holiday long weekend.
The site is very good, easy to find and very well equipped.
There is water, a charming chemical toilet with a good view, a HOT outdoor shower, fire wood and a stone circle to burn it in, recycling facilities and pigs (3), chickens (3) and horses (3) all within 30 yards. They were charming, sit and watch the pigs running and squeeling for their food. You can feed them fruit and they love a scratch behind their ears.
The owners are charming and make sure you are comfortable.
My only worry is that this campsite gets too busy.

My girlfriend and I made a trip to Ash Farm at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. The owners were very hospitable hosts and couldn't have done more.
Really good composting toilet, fire pit and the first outdoor gas shower I have ever seen. The pigs weren't too noisy either! Really good spot to access both the north and south coasts, pub just down the road.
We will be heading back to Ash Farm soon.
