Stayed here for one night with a friend. This was just the sort of place we were looking for! The site owners were very friendly. It was clear they had really put thought into the site and that not disturbing the natural beauty of the site was important to them. A small example of this was the fact that they'd gone to the trouble of making the composting toilet 'earth-sheltered' (a layer of earth with grass growing on the roof). As I was only there one night I didn't bother with a shower. The showers if I'm not mistaken rely on solar heating, I'd be hesitant to try this until the weather was a bit warmer.
We bought some fire wood for the evening which we set going after we'd come back from the pub (about 1. 5km from the site).
The owners also sold us some duck eggs which they'd procured from one of the nearby farms, we cooked these for breakfast on our portable stove, absolutely delicious! There were only about 10 tents in what was quite a large field (with a nice view of a lake) so there was a pleasant feeling of spaciousness.
This is camping as it should be, very basic and peaceful.
I would definitely come back.

A fantastic campsite offering the perfect blend of 'wild camping' and the benefits of composting toilets, fresh water and fires. Small site, very friendly owners with a relaxed approach made for a quiet relaxing stay. Great views, dog friendly and well behaved dogs allowed off the lead provided you are aware of their ducks and don't let your dog chase them! Good dog walks around. Highly recommended if you are not one of those who like concrete shower blocks, mirrors, hairdryers etc. We will certainly be back.

Well what can I say? Invited to attend family/friends bank holiday weekend camping get together, the downside being had to bring a tent and only facilities, composting toilet and solar shower?? Not on my bucket list. However, great guest list so didn't want to lose out and so accepted. What a revelation ! Fabulous site, views over Carsington water amazing. The 'dreaded ' composting loo was better than ANY portaloo I have ever used, no matter how clean and amazingly loo paper provided, and solar fairy lights! There is even a stainless steel sink outside with soap and water to wash your hands. Didn't use the solar shower but looked like would work ok if needed. No tap for water but provided in plastic containers to take away and then the camp fairies replenished! Plenty of space for all campers - we were a large party of 22. Camp fires allowed - wood to purchase if needed. Owner very pleasant and friendly. Would actually want to visit again and cant believe am saying this, as usually stay on sites in our luxury touring caravan!

We camped at Berry Wood Farm for three nights during the middle of July 2013. We followed the Sat Nav which took us to the wrong side of the hill, so tip 1 is, follow the owner's advice and make sure you get to it via Kniveton off the Ashbourne Road.
There is no sign displayed on the main road.
Once we eventually found the campsite, it was like stumbling across the perfect spot, a gently sloping hill overlooking Carsington Water, in the middle of nowhere, back to basics camping in a quiet corner of the Peak District. The owner caught up with us after we had pitched our tent and was extremely welcoming. We selected a spot at the top of the campsite with a view which was lovely, although quite windy. There are two fields to choose from, both equally pretty. We took our own firewood, but it can be purchased there. There is no water supply t the camp, however big water cans can be collected from the trailer where you enter.
We bought fresh duck eggs for each morning from the owner which were delicious and the salads they grow are incredible and well worth buying.
The compost toilet is the best I have come across and was kept clean by all the people who used it. There was always a good supply of water at the washing sink and the solar shower was bracing, as the day after we arrived the sun decided to not come out until the morning we left, typical! Our Labrador was made very welcome, however as the ducks seem to roam free dogs are expected to be very well behaved.
All in all an excellent campsite if you are looking for somewhere to stay, away from the madding crowd, where the owner really cares. We will be going back.

A lovely little campsite. Perfect if you just want somewhere basic but friendly to pitch. Has a compost loo which was clean and fine if you don't mind them. Solar showers but didn't use them as we only stayed one night. Very friendly owners and beautiful views. Nearby carsington water and hognaston which has a pub but didn't visit.
Highly recommend hidden gem.
It was easy to find and is excellent value.

I stayed for three nights, the place is wonderful! It has a breath taking view of Carsington reservoir and the owners are so lovely! They gave us fresh duck eggs for our breakfast on our last morning.
Its fairly basic with a compost loo and solar shower so possibly not for people who want luxury but it was perfect for us. There's a couple of lovely pubs near by and lots of scenic walks!
Would highly recommend! 5* experience
