We arrived midweek & the site was blissfully quiet (probably due to the continual wet weather). We like sites that don't have marked out pitches and let you choose where to pitch, so we were happy. The whole place had a very relaxed atmosphere. Camping by the river was lovely.
Yes, the site does get pretty muddy in places despite sterling efforts by the owners. It's not Glasto, but don't expect to pad round in your sneakers!
The site is very well maintained yet retains a 'natural' look. The toilet block was the best kept one we have encountered. There are basins and mirrors, a shelf for your washbag & hooks for your clothes plus plenty of loo roll and soap in each cubicle! As there is no electric there's no freezer for icepacks, but the block is lit at night by solar powered fairy lights.
It's good to be able to take rowboats or canoes out at weekends. There are nice walks nearby too; the local church is well worth a visit if you're interested. It's a good site for dogs too - oh & how many other sites provide dog bags as well as dog bins?
The people running the site are very friendly & helpful but never intrusive. They work very hard to make this a nice place to stay.

I stayed at this campsite as the camping & caravan site I initially was going to stay at was partially closed because of flooding. Instead of cancelling my Dedham vale trip I decided upon this one after reading the reviews.
The setting is great. Right next to the river stour & right in the vale. There are country walks directly from the site, which I did use. The site is 2 miles from nayland, so unless you want to drive for groceries you have to bear that in mind.
The facilities are OK. Showers are portacabins & the hot water worked OK.
The toilet block does not have mains electricity. So no hot water there or mains lighting. Washing up facility is cold water only. At night fairy lights come on. Inside the toilet block lighting just about adequate. Though washing up at night found that difficult to see what I was doing.
I saw 2 sides of how busy the site was. The first 2 nights (mid-week) I had the entire site to myself it was like a private garden! Then at weekend families started arriving & started to get busy. The site was about 1/3 full. I would not like to be on this when it's totally rammed. I could see the facilities struggling.
Personally, I do like to get away from it all type thing. It can be a site to get away from it, but you would certainly have to choose your times of the year.
For kids there is a play area & the river is big draw for families & for canoe people.
It’s the only site I know which allows camp fires. You hire the fire holding pot (cut oil drum can) from the warden. Though I didn’t utilise this facility.
Cost wise for a solo camper non electric it’s on the upper regions costwise what I normally pay. Then again you are getting a great setting.
I would recommend. This site offers for what your circumstances & travel motives are. However, you would have to time your trip accordingly for your own purposes for either getting away from it or a family holiday!

We arrived on a Monday and it was one of the most idyllic riverside campsites we've ever stayed at.
Truly wonderfully peaceful with the river right next to you and swans swimming by. The river was perfect for the kids to play in and for us to canoe on.
Toilet blocks not that great but were adequate and the showers are the portaloo types ones so like showering in a plastic phone booth but better than none at all.
However, come Friday afternoon it filled up, with little or no space being left. We had people pitching between us and the campers next to us and they were so close to us that the edge of their tent was actually underneath the bed part on our folding camper!
They said they wanted to be next to the river as well so would pitch where they wanted!
Previously during the week we'd spoken to a few other guests who had said they had been going for years but no longer went at the weekends due to noise and drunkenness of large numbers of people.
We thought they were exaggerating but it was awful - worst campsite we'd ever stayed at. Like camping at Glastonbury, no space and drunken noise and music until the early hours with the on site warden doing absolutely nothing at all about it.
It was so bad even though we had booked and paid for the week until Monday we actually left on the Saturday.
We would go back. But only Monday to Thursday, never again at a weekend.
Toilets completely inadequate for the number of campers they allow, especially the ladies where the wash basins are actually in with the toilet which means if someone is brushing their teeth etc one toilet cannot be used.
Spoke to both the owners son who now manages it and the site 'warden' about what the maximum number of pitches were (separate conversations) and was told by both that they just open an extra field when one is full.

Set in beautiful surrounds, Rusbanks Farm is a fairly basic site with no electric, a clean toilet block (worth bringing your torch with you if you need a wee after dark) and new this year are showers. There was a washing up area, which we didn't use. You can purchase farm eggs at the warden caravan, but that's all.
You arrive and find your own spot, with wardens coming round during the evening to welcome you and collect your money. Fire pits and fire wood are available and cost £4 for the fire pit hire and bags of logs with kindling & firelighters costing £12. Marshmallows were also available. The wardens were friendly and helpful. If you are lucky, you can camp near the river. There are 2 other smallish fields with unmarked pitches.
We stayed over the late bank holiday and it was fairly busy. They had provided extra porta-loos but sadly these were closed by mid Sunday due to being full. Not sure if these porta-loos were a permanet feature. The main toilet block was kept clean and stocked with toilet roll, soap and paper towels. The new showers are in plastic porta-loo style cubicles and the water was hot. Also new this year are some swings for children.
Would we return? Yes, but not on a bank holiday.

This site is set right next to the river Stour, in a pretty location next to some woods. If you have a boat or canoe there is a jetty on site to launch from. There is boat hire on site, but it was fully booked the weekend we were there, so we could not get out on the river. There are a few pitches right next to the river and two further fields with hedges separating them. You can pitch where you want and, while the warden told me the site wasn't busy that weekend, it did all feel a little bit squished up to me.
The facilities comprised of a toilet block with washing up area at the end (cold water only) and some portable shower units. At the other end of the site was a row of portable toilets, so you don't have to walk across the whole site for a wee. They were well used though, and by Sunday most were full up and locked. The main block was always clean and well stocked though, but there is not much lighting, so you need a torch at night.
We arrived in torrential rain and it soon became clear that the site does not drain well. Parts of the site stayed waterlogged and boggy the whole weekend, and it was a good job we all had wellies to splosh and squelch our way to the toilets.
The ground was further churned up by the cars. The site design means that all the cars from our field and the next one along had to drive down the middle of our field to enter and exit. It's not pleasant having cars driving right next to your tent at the best of times, and worse when they turn the grass outside your tent to mud.
This is a lively site, with lots of families and groups with kids. It is also very noisy. The rules are 'no noise after 11pm', but on the first night there were kids running around the woods, shouting and screaming until well after midnight. Our neighbours were early risers, so we didn't get much sleep the first night. The second night was better, but it was still pretty loud until quite late. This is not a site to go to for peace and quiet!
One of the reasons we chose this site was because it allowed fires in fire pits. It is £4 per stay to hire the fire pit, which is made from the end of an oil drum, and a rather steep £12 for a bag of logs - I'd advise bringing your own. The fire pits work well and you can get a large blaze going to keep the cold at bay.
The camp site is in a pretty part of the country. We went to Flatford Mill to see the location for Constable's Hay Wain, and looked around the RSPB sanctuary next to it. We also visited Walton on the Naze, which has a lovely beach and a long pier to walk along.

This is the second time we've stayed here this year. A lovely grass site on the Stour river, with camping either right on the riverbank, or in a parallel strip behind a large hedge with plenty of gaps so you can easily get to the river. Water taps are along the hedge, as is car parking for those people camping on the riverbank.
There's a small toilet block near the entrance to the site (no showers, but basins and mirrors in each cubicle) and a couple of portaloos at the other. Always plenty of loo roll and soap, usually clean despite the site being very busy. There are two sinks for washing up but only cold water. There's no electric so the block is lit at night by fairy lights - very pretty!
Open fires are allowed as long as they are off the ground. You can hire a fire bucket and buy wood from the wardens, or bring your own.
There is a no noise after 11pm rule, which does seem to be observed. The wardens are nice guys and remind people of it when they come round to collect the fees in the early evening.
In the spirit of true camping, pitches aren't marked out, you can just camp where you like. Whether this is entirely a good thing or not depends on your neighbours' sense of personal space.
There is a footpath through the woods and across fields for about 2 miles to Nayland, where there is a grocers and a pub.
All in all, a very good site.

We have just come home from spending a weekend at this campsite, we were in a campervan with awning and were lucky enough to get a pitch right next to the river. This is a fantastic site for families or just adults, my son had a brilliant time on the rope swings and in the river with everyone being really friendly.
The toilets were kept very clean and so is the site it's self, lots of people had their own canoes so you don't just have to rent them. The site wardens are also very helpful and friendly.
We will definitely be returning to this site

I camped here with my two girls and we had a lovely time. Everyone was very friendly and the toilet facilities were clean. The girls loved splashing about in the river. There are lots of great walks nearby so we got plenty of exercise and consequently slept very well. The site although busy the first few nights was quiet by about 10 each evening. A big plus for the girls was an ice cream van that drove around the site at the end of the day. This site is only £15 a night so much cheaper than most sites probably due to the lack of showers. But that ment we could all have ice creams and still only be paying what we would normally pay per night. Fantastic we have already booked to go back at the end of the holidays.

We visited Rushbanks to try out our new 5m Bell Tent, having been here before we knew what we were in for!
The toilet block is always clean and stocked with loo roll and soap etc. There are no showers here, if you are only staying for the weekend then this isn't a problem. I did see some campers with solar showers and utility tents so there is always a way round it.
There are two washing up sinks that don't offer hot water, although they are never busy (even with a busy site)
There isn't a 'playground' but this site really doesn't need one.
Now that the negative points have been covered.
This site is amazing, a ten minute drive out of town and you could be anywhere! a pitch by the river is best, there are three jetty's and two rope swings that are well used during the day. The kids and adults love having a play and swim in the river, the time we went it was perfect for cooling off in the water. It is safe to swim in, if you don't mind the occasional water weed in your hair.
Open fires are allowed off the ground and can be hired for £3 off the site. We took our own but many visitors hired them. The campsite staff are very polite.
We took our two dogs and found that there is plenty of space for them to run around at the top field of the camp site. There are even doggy bags available and bin liners at the toilet block.
Since we were last there, they have started to hire canoes and row boats, we opted for the canoe and had a great time paddling down river; as soon as you go round the bend from the campsite it becomes very peaceful and tranquil.
This place does what it says on the tin, it doesn't have to have any more facilities to make an enjoyable weekend. We absolutely loved the weekend and are planning to go back there many more times in the future.

We stayed here for one night with our friends in their campervan, using it for a stopover as we are in the process of walking The Essex Way.
The site is absolutely beautiful, what a fabulous location on the banks of the River Stour and we would have liked to have launched our canoes from there had we not been there for a different purpose.
No showers, but not a problem as we knew that, the toilets were clean and tidy and we loved the relaxed pitching. Very reasonable too at £15 a night.
Our only gripe, and this is down to the people who were also pitched there at the weekend rather than the campsite, is that children were still running around screaming at the tops of their voices at after 11pm, having been given a rules sheet when we paid saying quiet after 10pm we found this unacceptable. We have no problems with people chatting after 'quiet time' but to have kids running around with head torches on is not on. Thankfully we had brought ear plugs, mind you the children woke us up about 6. 30am again as we could hear them through the ear plugs!
