You want meticulously mown pitches, hot showers, sparkling clean toilets and on-site entertainment, this isn't the site foryou! But if you're looking for somewhere basic (one old toilet and water for washing only - bring your own drinking water), don't mind sharing a field with the sheep and want spectacular views of Kinder Scout and the surrounding area, you couldn't ask for a better site.
We stopped here for two nights, as all the other sites in the area were full. It's on the same road as Upper Booth campsite on the Pennine Way and only identifiable from a cardboard sign on the gate stating 'Camping by permission only'.
The first night was idyllically quiet, with only one caravan and a small DofE group or similar sharing the site with us. Unfortunately on the second night, a large group had booked in to have a party - apparently she comes there every ten years, so you probably won't have to worry. The owners are helpful and friendly. The caravanners found themselves in the middle of the party on Saturday night, and obviously decided to pack up and go home. The farmer must have noticed them and rather than just let them get on with it, he hitched the caravan onto his Landrover and towed them to the quieter far end of the field.
We would definitely use the site again - I think it's ideal for a quiet weekend or couple of nights away from it all.

Just returned from a 2 day / 1 night stay here, and the scenery was gorgeous! It was a real experience, but it did bring a whole new meaning to the phrase "roughing it"! The farm house has "character" (!), the road leading up to the house up the middle of the camping field is only usable for tractors or very high 4x4s (I have a ford fiesta so I had to take a detour up the field), and every bit of grass is covered in sheep poop! You have to share the field with the sheep, but there were some gorgeous little lambs and we got to watch them being fed by the farmer. The facilities are non-existant - one old toilet and one outside cold tap, but the water is not for drinking so bring your own. If you, like us, enjoy going back to basics and just getting out to walk or appreciate the landscape, then you'll enjoy it, but if you want comforts and cleanliness, look elsewhere! A really fun weekend, very enjoyable!

Just returned from a fantastic overnight camping trip at Highfield Farm. I'm a 'newbie' to camping and my husband (of 16 weeks!) wanted to introduce me to the joys of camping with a short trip. I said I wanted a site with all the facilities for a first experience at camping but as we decided to go last minute on a sunny bank holiday weekend we didn't have much choice. We were very pleased to get a pitch at Highfield Farm, as all the other sites in the area were full, and decided that for an overnight trip we could manage with just a toilet and no water and at £2 per person and 50p for the car for one night it was a bargain! The site is in a fantastic position looking down into Edale and up to Mam Tor. Yes, it is basic with just a run-down toilet but it is in an amazing position. There were just two other tents pitched apart from us so it was so quiet. The handful of sheep in the field didn't bother us and the farm dogs were kept tied up or were out working. The sound of the curlews above was fantastic and so relaxing. From what we read on this site before we went we knew the nearest pub was a few miles away so we took our own beer and had great fun cooking on a single burner. All in all it was a fantastic position to be introduced into the world of camping with simply amazing views. Now if I've got the camping bug after staying on a basic site just think what one with facilities would be like.! :-)

August 2003 A very basic site indeed with one flush toilet and a water tap. £2 per adult per night and £0.50 per car. The nearest pub is about 2 miles by road.
