What a beautiful picture perfect caravan site! This site has no hard standing so it might be worth checking with the warden before you visit.
The site itself is beautiful - as are the grounds of Elvaston Castle. Our dog, Angus McTavish, enjoyed the large open spaces were he could run free.
The warden was very friendly and helpful and he keeps the site and its facilities well ordered and fully working - the showers were clean and lovely and warm.
We'll be back soon - promise!

This site is set in the grounds of the castle.
All pitches are grass and are subject to weather conditions at the time of our stay a number of the pitches were out of use due to water logging.
The site itself is quiet and peaceful and squirrels roam around, the grounds of the castle are pleasant for walking and dogs are allowed to be exercised on a large grassy area just outside the site gate
Sadly the facilities on this site are not of the usual Caravan club standard, the toilet and showers whilst clean were aged and in dire need of refurbishment, the dishwashing and information room are combined and there are no laundry facilities.
The site is secured at night by a entrance gate to which you receive a key, notices on the site warn that this is for your safety and to keep the joyriders out, there are also signs warning of thefts from the site, including water pumps.
The site is in easy reach of Derby and a park and ride scheme operates,
Shops and supermarkets are a few Min's drive away

As always the not so brillant bits.
First of all we must comment on the pitchs. There all grass pitchs and on the friday we arrived at they were very very soaked, some were waterlogged and not a chance of getting a caravan on especially a big twin axle like ours. We managed to find one on a corner but had to go the wrong way round the one way centre road to get into it. The pitchs are not well drained pitchs but we found out why this is.
The facilities for disabled were as expected however the main facilities not so brillant. The mens showers are electric shower and not very powerful and they are not to big either. They were not in the most brillant of conditions which was a surprise for a caravan club site.
Their reception area had all the usual information leaflets within it. The site is secure after dark, you get a key for the main entrance padlock but we were warned by the lady in reception not to leave anything valuable within the awning as there had been some thefts.
This is not a site for the quiet retreat. The kids use the centre ring road as a race track for their bikes and on more than one occasion we saw close encounters with both cars and caravans and the wooden marker posts were knocked out by the kids on bikes.
This site is very shaded.
So whats good
The security for your outfit being towed away is good, there is one barrier to lift first and at night the outer gates are locked and padlocked.
The reception area with its books and leaflets is well maintained.
There are at least two on site elsan points and at least three areas for water and rubbish bins.
The site itself is located on the outer edges of the castle grounds and there are a number of walks up to the house and grounds.
Further away you have close decent road access to both Derby and Nottingham and the M1.
Overall though I was a little disappointed with the site however we understand that the castle and and grounds have been sold off to some enterprise that is going to create a leisure park, golf course, hotel etc and we have read on the leaflet that the campsite is earmarked for a play area but when it doesnt say when.
This would account for some of the lack of. Attention to detail. This remember is just our opinion. This is a very small campsite and is ok for a weekend at an event at the castle although somewhat pricy for non caravan club members.

This is a very clean & tidy site, it is part of Elvaston Castle grounds with plenty of walks & is ideal for dogs and exercise. The wardens are friendly and very helpful. The price is very competitive. Summer time the site is very busy and is often fully booked at weekends.
From the grounds access to the national cycle network is very easy and there is a very pleasant cycle ride from the site to Derby city centre away from the roads and all level on good surfaces.
On the down side you need to keep cycles etc locked up as there have been some thefts this year. Always somebody to spoil things.

A delightful little site which we have visited on more than one occasion and will go again. The site is clean and tidy as are the toilets and the showers. The site keeper was very friendly and extremely helpful. Although this site doesn't have a children's play area on the site, there is one at the side of it which my children thoroughly enjoyed. It is ideally situated for walking through the grounds of the castle and visiting the castle itself. There is a huge field next to the site which, unless there is a scheduled event, is free to use. We took the children on there to play and walked the dog there. Dogs are allowed on the site. I would highly recommend this site.

We stayed here for the bank holiday weekend as our first two choices of campsite were fully booked. What a pleasant surprise we got from our third choice! Campsite was smaller than the pictures show, but not too imposing. Toilets/showers were clean and well kept. The guy in the office was very friendly. The campsite is in a field next to acres of woodland that can take hours to explore. At the castle (10 mins walk) there's a cafe that sells hot and cold food during the day. There's also a large playing field too. The kids play area is next to the campsite (as is the ice-cream van!) and there really are loads of squirrels and interesting animals to keep you amused. The campsite was asleep by 9pm which was great for us with a young son to think about. There isn't a shop on site (it says that there is on the website) but the local village is only about a 20 minute walk away. If you want a peaceful, relaxing break with lots to explore, then this campsite is great. Will definitely return.

This site was the first time out in my caravan. Armed with 2 children & dog it was fantastic! The wardens were incredibly friendly & helpful. The site was very clean & well cared for too. Pitches were nice & easy to park in, also nice and level too (always a bonus!) There is so much space in the park next door that you can walk & run, ride your bike, walk your dog, fly your kite for hours & hours (can you tell I liked this site?) toilet & wash facilities were again clean & well kept. Well worth a trip :o)

Phoned to ask if there was space for a tent- was told that they do not accept tents unless accompanied by a caravan club member - so be careful if you are thinking of booking here as you will need to have a member with you or be a member of the caravan club.

March 2004 Stayed here for only one night, but would certainly return. The toilets were basic but warm and clean. The pitches were grass and a little muddy but this was made up for by the superb Castle grounds which were endless. You could spend several days here and find somewhere new to walk every time. I think in good weather this site would be a little gem. The dog loved it.
