We came with a group of friends with their children. Found the info on this site and took into consideration the reviews of others.
Getting there down lots of very narrow lanes. God help if we met anything coming the other way.We had a little trailer, and when we reversed it would twist to the side. Not good. But that was our problem. To get to way out places with fab views. You expect it.
Loved the views, but the site seemed to attract the wind, which gusted under our awning and the boys were pretty cold. Toilets were basic, a little trek from the site (thankful for our porta potti) and could do with a few cheap modifications. Like a hook on the back of the door, hot running plumbed in water and cleaned occasionally. I didn't even try the shower. Looked pretty manky.
The field grass was cut nice and short, and there was a couple of fresh water taps. The owners were friendly, and the animals, especially the horses. Well, great characters. We had tiny lambs in the field beside us, which for the kids was also great. We love walking and good views, and the walks up the hill to the common land was fab, and the views breathtaking!
Found it rather expensive as it was price per person and there was no hook up, but the company was fab so made up for it!
Loved the fact we could all sit around the fire.Don't forget to take your own firewood. And the stars at night again.Great.
We bought meat from the owners, which was tasty but a little expensive. We didn't have their brecky as it was for a set time, a little too early for all of the group, so we did our own fry up and bacon sarni's at a time that suited us.
All in all a good weekend.

Lovely site, friendly owners Sue & John, simple and quiet, and off the beaten track. Wonderful stars on a clear night. Site is a simple field, most of it slopes to some degree in one direction or another so choose carefully! If you choose the hedge side for a little shelter from the wind, beware of furry night-time visitors. Shower and loos are basic but fine; two taps for water (spring fed) and a campfire circle complete the facilities.
Walking on the moorland (open access land) is excellent, and a short trek up (UP!) the lane by the site takes you there. On the other hand we found that, generally, footpaths on farmland in the area are not well signposted. The site is on OS Explorer sheet 188, close to the eastern edge (201 is the next one over). It would be hard to get by with a Landranger due to the lack of signposting.
Well worth a visit is the area called The Begwns, south of Painscastle. Again, open land and good to explore, with specatacular views from 'The Roundabout' on top.
Hay on Wye is easy to get to and probably the closest place for provisions (Co-Op supermarket; small general stores, butchers, baker in town). There is a pub (The Roast Ox) in Painscastle to the south of the site, walk across the open moor or via the (B) road in the village. It looks lovely and quite newly done out, but when we went (Saturday lunchtime)it was empty. Sadly the real ale wasn't up to much - past its best I think. We didn't try the food, although the menu looked quite extensive. We would recommend enjoying your own favourite bottled ales on the site - bring some from home, as we didn't find a good source of local ones.
By far the best place for food is the farmhouse itself! We loved breakfast, didn't try an evening meal but did enjoy some of the farm's own beef in a curry one evening. Delicious.
If you like a quiet, simple site with good walking on the doorstep, this one's for you.

I would agree with other reviewers.
A group of us visited one (snowy) weekend in April '08. The site is basic, quiet and peaceful, the night skies were dark and clear.
Sue and John gave us a very warm welcome, and the food (breakfast and evening meals) was excellent in terms of quality, quantity and value-for-money.
Local activities include walking, mountain biking, horse riding, and visits to towns eg Hay-on-Wye.

This is a really nice basic campsite, beautiful scenery and nice and cheap. The shower was dirty but free- if it had cost more to stay we would have been disappointed. We had a great stay here, making use of the communal campfire facilities and the farm produce (1/2 doz eggs for 70p).
No-one has mentioned the wind. Make sure you peg all your guyropes out as the wind tends to rush down the valley straight through the site. The wind did assist the fire however, which was handy. I think you have to bring your own wood. The site also catches the sun nicely.

Hi.
Well you have heard the saying, away from it all, This site is exactly that. It is halfway up the side of a beautifully Valley on the welsh borders.
The camping field is about 2 acres and is 60% sloping, on the field there is a picnic table and also a specific area you may have a campfire.
The wash rooms consist of two toilets and a shower Unisex. Basic but clean.
The farm is small and they breed highland cattle and keep sheep, you can purchase both from the farmer, ready for the pot I must add.
They will also freeze your Ice packs for you free of charge but you have to catch them home to retrieve them as both work out on the farm.
There is no EHU and they told me there never will be.
This site is central to some lovely border towns that are well worth a visit.
And for the bird watcher I saw Redkites and ravens every day.
I can recommend this site for people who really want to get away from it all.

Second visit for us - if you like getting away from it all, this is the site for you. Small camping field and basic washing facilities but great communal camp fire, walks in surrounding hills and Farmer v friendly - took kids to see the cattle and sheepdogs. Bought burgers and beef to take home and have sampled the packed lunch too - all very good. Handy for canoeing on the Wye and couple of good local pubs short drive away. Recommend taking a large bag of marshmallows for toasting and buy your burgers from John on the Friday night to defrost for Saturday night barby.

We can not recommend this site to enough people!
Had the best time staying on New House Farm.
Great location. Even though there was only one shower at the time it didn't matter because it was always very well kept and clean with hot water when we needed it.
We sampled some of the meat from the farmer which made us wish we had one more night left to sample more.
Friendly correspondence when we first booked and directions was clear and easy to follow.
Our kind of campsite, with an open fire and nothing but the sounds of nature at night. Centrally located for site seeing in the area and beautiful views to feast your eyes on by day.

A warm welcome. Lovely farm in the middle of nowhere. Shower and hot water. A small field a bit sloping but nothing too bad. About 8 tents when we were there. Kids could play in field safely. We would have used the campfire but for bad weather. Even with rain we thoroughly enjoyed being here. We will return

Stayed at New House Farm this Easter weekend. Really quiet and peaceful (almost isolated) with beautiful scenery. Horses, Highland Cattle, Ducks and of course sheep (it is in Wales!) are all around and we even saw a couple of Red Kites along with LOADs of Buzzards. This site allows you to have a fire within a small stone circle at one end of the field. We invited the other group of campers over and it was a very sociable night ! A new toilet / shower is needed and luckily one is on its way in the very near future. New House Farm is quite a way from any shops, so its worth getting all you need before arriving. Hay on Wye is definitely worth a wander around. We had a cooked farmhouse breakfast on Sunday morning and for £5 was fantastic. The evening meals also looked brilliant value although we didn't get chance to sample those this time. Thanks to John and Sue for a lovely weekend. All in all, a brilliant site.

WOW - We had a great time it was so peaceful and quiet. We had a great meal and Sue & John were really helpful with our fussy eater. The shower took a little getting used to as it was very basic but it was all clean so after a couple of times you got used to it. It is really handy for lots of visits the best one being going down the mines just outside Abbergavenny we couldn't believe it was free and the boys thought it was the best day ever! I would thoroughly reccommend this site to any one who wants to get away from it all and go to a small site - only 5 pitches. *****
