We stayed at this site for nine nights.
Plus : fantastic size pitches, flat, sheltered, and large. We have a vango diablo 900 xp with large canopy windbreak and car. Loo's and showers were fantastic and clean, you didn't press a button every few seconds for the shower, when it was on it was on for as long as you wanted. Site was always clean and quiet. Owners were extremely friendly and helpful, other campers were friendly.
Bad points : The damned peacock woke me up at 5.10 am four times. The games/tv room was lacking a little. The shop was open when we were asleep or out and could have been bigger. Annoying beep every 4 seconds from 10 pm until morning (seemed to be when the games/tv room was closed for the night). The water was so hot it was possible to scald. The play area was small and the putting area was very steep, no good for ball sports. It was also out of sight of the site and next to the drive in and the passing main road. The football area was tiny.
All in all we loved the site, one or two little things could have been better but nothing that stopped us staying for nine nights. A good all round site. Wasn't the best but far from the worst. I will recommend this site to friends who are looking for a quiet site but who spend most of the day out and about.

Stayed at this site at the end of July for 8 nights with my wife and two girls aged 10 and 3. As we hadn't been to the area before, we chose the campsite partly on the strength of reviews and Gillespie Leisure's website. Overall, we had a great holiday - we loved the site, there was plenty to do without travelling too far and the weather was kind to us.
We were looking for a campsite that was fairly small and quiet but with good facilities and Barlochan lived up to expectations. In particular, having a 3-year old, the site felt very secure. It is in a very quiet area, well back from the main road. The tents and tourers area is quite small, only 20 pitches, and adjacent to the amenity block, pool and games room and surrounded by trees which provide a bit of additional shelter. Nearly all the pitches are on level terraced areas and well-drained - withstood some substantial downpours during our visit. Toilets and showers are immaculate and free. The heated outdoor pool is small but just right for small children, the only downside being that all children have to be supervised by parents - not the fault of the wardens, who as mentioned elsewhere were very helpful. There are other sites bettered suited to those wanting lots of activities, but we appreciated the peacefulness of the place.
There is a decent pub 5 minutes walk away in Palnackie, most amenities can be found in Dalbeattie, should mention very friendly Church that meets in the town hall. Some nice walks in the area, along the coast at Kippford and Sandyhills, or climb up Screel hill off A711 1 mile south of the campsite.

This is a great site that caters for all ages. It is primarily a static caravan site that has a well set out camping area close to the facilities.
Although the pitches are very close together, they are not intrusive.
We found it to be an extremely children friendly site. We had 2 families with 4 children and the neighbours were very tolerant. (most campers usually are) It was noisy until 12 and then all was quiet. No noises through the night, although the family tent close to us were up early, but that’s camping in a family site.
The facilities are very clean and the lockable shower rooms are great. Shower with sink to clean up properly, rather that just a row of showers.
I cannot attest to the quality of the pool as I was fishing along at the loch while my wife and daughter went for a swim, but the devastation in my wee ones face when we finally dragged her away suggests that it was great fun. Although 27 degrees is optimistic.
The fishing loch, if that’s your thing (it is mine) is OK. Unless you are a combat fisherman there are not many places to throw a line in. It is a coarse fish loch, but if you are catching them on the fly go somewhere else. You will not be able to cast. There are 2 wooden pontoons, to the left and right (the right has more room) as you walk down to the loch. Be careful, it can be slippery. But none the less I enjoyed it; I believe there are some big ones in there.
There is a well run site shop that sells the basics, nothing fancy.
The owners are great and very friendly and accommodating and let the site run the way it should. Yet another great site in a beautiful part of the country and one we will be returning to.

We stayed one night at this great site.
The owners are very friendly, warm and helpful.
As we wanted to leave the next morning already we asked to sleep in the car instead of the tent (as it takes less time for us) which was not a problem at all.
There were families with children as well who seemed to have a great time.
The showers and toilets are clean and seemed new. They are free.
Well kept dish wash area and laundry units are available.
The site has a game room (with billiard, airhockey, TV etc. Open until 10pm) which is brilliant to relax after travels.
They have a very nice and clean, heated (27 degrees) swimming pool, which we were very happy to use after a surprisingly hot day.
I was especially happy with the site as I lost my armchain during our stay and when I called back the day after they had found it and offered to send it to me without any extra trouble or costs. Where can you find that nowadays? ;) MANY THANKS!
We can definitely recommend this site. We will come back, whenever we are in the area.

My son and I stayed here for two nights recently in a two man tent on a standard (unserviced) pitch. It is a well maintained site in a lovely rural location. The standard tent pitches are on level ground. There are four or five terraced levels rising from the toilet / shower / laundrette block. Touring pitches with electric hook up are also available on the site.
The site is a credit to its wardens, Anne and Steve, and if there was a trophy for friendliest site warden then Anne would be a front runner.
The facilities on the site are good. There is a well maintained heated swimming pool, a games room that is very reasonably priced, a children's play area with tyre swings and a chute, mini golf and a football goalposts and net next to the play area.
The site sits on a hillside which rises steeply from the main road (A 711). It is well landscaped and pleasing to the eye.
The village of Palnackie is within walking distance of the site and the towns of Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas are a short drive away.
The artist town of Kirkcudbright is a slightly longer distance but well worth the visit.
As a previous poster mentioned a visit to the Dalbeattie museum is time well spent. It's owned and run by a friendly informative couple and must rank among the best of its kind.
The standard pitches are close together with no separation between pitches. I only mention this as privacy may be a consideration for some.
In summary one of the nicest sites we have visited. Great Wardens, good facilities and a scenic rural location.

We arrived with our tent, two children 9 and 4 and our dog after a few days of heavy rain. Anne (campsite warden) offered us a choice of a few pitches with electric hook up and we chose one around 30 yards from the toilet block. Pitch was very level and relatively stone free. Toilet block was kept very clean as was the dish washing, laundry, and chemical waste areas. Great showers (two with disabled access). Toilets and showers are unisex at the moment as the men's area is being renovated, this did not appear to be a problem for anyone. Great games room for the kids, open from 9am-10pm, with pool table, air hockey, electronic games etc all priced at 50p. Outdoor pool is free to use, heated and also kept immaculate. Playground on site with putting, both children were never bored. Small shop on site opens 9am-11am and 3pm-5pm. Dalbeattie five mins in the car and Castle Douglas around 10 mins. Geat pub in Palnackie, serving good well priced food and all the locals were very friendly. We loved this site and cant praise Anne and her husband highly enough, both seem to work very hard maintaining every aspect of the site and were so friendly and helpful. We look forward to returning as the only downside was the continuous rain, but hey we are Scottish campers and had a great time anyway, we are used to rain! 10/10

After reading all the good reviews about this site I couldn't wait to get there, upon arrival I was not to be disappointed, Ann came out very friendly and showed us our pitches, we set up and went for a dip in the pool. The pitches are terraced and we were on the top terrace and fitted the Vango 900xp on without any problem, although I had to park the car away when the next pitch was occupied but if you have a large tent then you have to live with this. The toilets and showers were the best I have seen and they are currently updating the men's. The site is quiet and by 10.30pm ish only the wildlife could be heard. The playground is great for the kids and gets checked every night to make sure it is safe, there is some goal posts set up and a small golf course, games room with tv. There is a fishing loch about 10 minutes walk from the site down the main road. 6 miles down the road is Castle Douglas where there is a decent size Tesco for supplies and closer is Dalbeatie with Spar etc. Its worth popping into the museum there, its free and it really does take you back. All in all we will revisit, its a superb area and in my mind the best site we have been to. 5/5

We love this site - you get a really friendly welcome from Anne and Steve. The children love the outdoor pool, games room and playground. The pitches are on level terraces although the site is steep and well clothed with trees shrubberies etc. The ladies toilet block has been 'done up' and is fab, gents to be done next, although still acceptable. We have been 3 times and haven't yet needed to go to any tourist attractions as the glorious weather has kept us by the pool or on the sister site beach (10 mins drive). Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas not far for shopping etc. I would like to keep this gem a secret, but they are well deserving of a good review!

We stayed at Barlochen camp site for the first time at the beginning of August the weather was good. The showers where a slightly dated but were nice and warm, could do with being updated a bit. The outside pool was well maintained. The wardens Anne & Steve couldn't has been more helpful. The pitches are nice and level. If you want a meal you need to book at the only pub at Palnackie or you could go to the Kings Arm in Dalbeatie or the pubs in Kippford- they are all well priced and the food is great. The area has plenty to offer. We would definately go back.

We stayed at Barlochan Camp site just last weekend, the weather was fantastic and so werethe amenities. The wardens Anne & Steve couldn't have been more helpful. The outdoor heated swimming pool was superb, and this and the rest of the site was always kept clean. The site shop sells most items that you would require, and the small games room holds plenty of entertainment. Flies could be nuisance, so take some repellent spray.
