The camping at Heathfield has recently had a face lift and it is a very nice and flat pitch with capacity for about 30 tents. Prices are reasonable and the washing/toilet facilities are very good. There is a large presence of static caravans but the camping is on its own in a separate field. There is a shop on site which sells the basics at reasonable prices. There's no play area but there is a recreational hall.
Incidentally further up the road is Westfield and Topfield where there is more camping, but the facilities aren't as good. The pitches aren't as flat but it is much quieter. There's also a section where you can camp along the river and have an open fire.
The surrounding area has tons to do and we managed to pack in loads.
There are walks all around the area to suit all fitness levels. I particularly like the short walk to the Bridge Inn that's about 1/4 mile away. The 1. 5 mile walk into Pateley Bridge along the Beck then along the River Nidd is lovely and mostly off road. If you manage to find the Sportmans Arms (another pub) it's well worth a 3/4 mile walk to.
Although Pateley Bridge is a small town there are 2 very good butchers, along with 2 small supermarkets, 2 Indian restaurants, 2 fish and chip shops, 2 Grocers, a very good bakers, hardware store, pet store and a deli. There's also a music shop, 2 banks, estate agents, charity shop, and excellent wine merchants where he'll try to match you to a good bottle of wine in your price range, which he has done for us several times. They're all friendly and sell quality produce. There's even a Japanese/Chinese restaurant but I haven't been in and it receives mixed reviews.
There are several places to eat, but I can recommend the Granary cafe. Excellent (proper) cappuccinos and home cooked food. I would particularly recommend the Cheese scone, Wensleydale cheese and onion chutney.
The oldest sweetshop in Britain can also be found here where they sell just about any sweet you can imagine or that has ever been made!
There's an excellent council run swimming pool between the campsite and Pateley Bridge.
In Pateley Bridge there is a great little kids play area right next to the bowling green where you can enjoy a rather excellent ice cream (if not a tad expensive) sold from a van next to the play area.
Further afield is How Stean Gorge where you can explore caves and a gorge! There's Brimham Rocks where you are free to explore some unusual rock formations. Parking is a touch expensive but free for National Trust members. Darley Mill at Dacre Bank is worth a visit. The restaurant is very good and it sells home furnishing, cookware, gifts, sweats chocolate etc over 3 floors of a disused mill which still has a working water wheel. There's a Smokery and Ice Cream parlour on the way to Fewston & Swinsty reservoirs but it's quite pricey although does provide quality produce.
You are able to walk round most of the reservoirs in the region which makes for some beautiful scenery. Also try Coldstone Cut. A working quarry viewing area with a bizarre art installations, that's essentially a small street at the top of a hill!
Can't wait to go back as there's still loads to do: Stump Cross Caverns, walk along river Wharfe at Grassington, take the kids Trout fishing at at Kilnsey Wood Park. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Deer Park.
