We booked in and paid in advance as we have 4 kids and the pool on site sounded great but on arrival we left and sought a refund.

- the concrete pitches were inches above the grass and would have caused problems with our van. These pitches just did not looked cared for

- we arrived at ~2pm and a couple of vans on the touring site were populated by large groups who had clearly been enjoying themselves for some time and the choice of loud language used was not for young ears.

- The staff just didn't want to hear our concerns and couldn't offer any solution or alternative.

I wouldn't recommend, certainly if you are using hard standing pitches or if you have kids. For the price there are much better sites out there.

I have to say that after reading reviews about this site, I was rather concerned. But it was a pleasant surprise. We checked in (please note that this in the shop by the clubhouse). Staff were helpful when asked questions and even got a guy to come and show us what pitches we could have. He was also helpful and said if we had any concerns then to just go back to him.
All the pitches were hard standing and yes some were cracked but certainly usable and better than some of the grass pitches that we have had at other sites. Our electric was also in good working order.
The site had a clubhouse which I imagine gets extremely busy and warm in the busier months. The entertainment staff were good considering and welcomed everybody to join in. I would imagine that many of the statics are owned and therefore, there was lots of groups about. But all of them made my family very welcome. The walks by the estuary would be stunning in the summer and the fishing lake seemed well maintained.
All in all we liked this site the only down side was the journey there. From Kent it seemed to take forever much to the dismay of our 8 and 10 years olds! Please also note that we only paid 33 pounds for 3 nights (bargain!)

The Staff on site were very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area.

The site is quite away from anything Steeple has no shops at all. We are talking 4 miles to the nearest takeaway. 5/7 miles to decent shops.

The site is well kept and tidy a good base for touring but a little too quiet for me.

The on site Club is very good with good live acts.

The site would definitely benefit from having a new set of facilities for the touring section as the shower block is really too small.

Staff are absolutely brilliant manager could not have been more helpful, we had been double booked on another site so arrived after reception closed, but manager could not have been more kind and accommodating. Letting us pitch up with electric hook-up overnight to sort out rest with reception at our leisure in the morning. (we then ended up paying and spending entire holiday there) Catering staff fantastic with our lactose allergies, really helpful, checking labels etc for us. Toilet block very clean, clubhouse very friendly, kids loved the play area, husband loved the fishing lake, outside swimming pool closed whilst we were there so could not try this out. Wish the shop stocked more practical items as the nearest shop off site is quite a drive away. We loved it and kids cant wait to go back. We will definitely be using this site for many more visits.

Date of Visit: August 2007 Unit:  Tent

I visited this site in a group of 3 adults and 5 children staying in two tents in mid August 2007.  Unfortunately we chose a day where there was a gale force wind literally blowing across the camping field.

We pitched up and stayed one night, having paid for two but the weather made swimming a non option for young children and sleeping a non option because of the noise of the wind against the tent - no matter how many bottle of wine we tried to use to ease sleeping!

To be fair the swimming pool, although a lot smaller in real life than it appears on the website was quite warm - especially for an outside pool.  They also had a very nice, if quite small, play area with outside picnic tables right next door to the pool which would probably be lovely in the sunshine.

The clubhouse however left an awful lot to be desired - the kidsclub was supposed to start at 11am but the clubhouse failed to open til 12pm - and when it finally did open the kids club was basically just an old guy giving out paper and colouring pencils for the kids to scribble away on - not even a competition or any form of direction to be seen.

The clubhouse itself was also in dire need of redecoration - we estimated that the nicotine stained drop ceiling tiles must have been up for at least 30 years and had probably never been washed or decorated since being erected.  The service in the bar and the cafe although friendly enough eventually was often non existent or you waited ages for somebody to turn up.  We ate in the cafe on the first night and had 3 children's meals with beans - and the beans were almost cold on all three plates!  Also, half the orders did not come out as described on the menu - ie chicken curry with rice and naan bread came out as curry with rice and chips - with no prior notice of change.

The worst thing about the site was the toilet/shower block.  We didnt use the showers as they were very dirty and there were only 3 of them - but of the 5 or so sinks there for washing your hands only two taps out of 10 worked and there was no soap or plugs to use with them.  There was also no sign of an electricity socket anywhere to be seen, so drying your hair etc was left to the hand dryer if at all!

I had emailed to enquire about their facilities before booking and been advised that the shower blocks had recently been refurbished - well if this were true then I think the contractors could qualify for one of those DIY disaster programmes on BBC1!

We hung out for as long as we could on the 2nd day of our visit in the hope that the wind would die down but it didnt and we nearly died of boredom sitting around in the clubhouse which resembled a ghost town in the meantime.

We finally packed everything back up and left at around 4pm on our 2nd day, just barely 24 hours after we arrived - an hour or so later than we might have done had there been any signpost to indicate the existence of the campsite from the main village road - from which you have to turn onto a sort of single track dirt track for a mile or so before you see the first sign for the site, just before you hit the main entrance!

The strange thing with the wind was that we were only 30 minutes drive from home and there had been no wind there at all and within 5 miles of leaving the campsite we hit Maldon and the trees were barely moving there too! Me thinks Steeple may have its own weather cyclone - beware!
