We found the toilet facilities to be disappointing. They are clearly quite new but have not been maintained as already some shower and toilet cubicles are out of order and the locks are broken on others. Cleanliness left something to be desired, but the cleaning was being done by children on at least one occasion. There are lots of signs asking users to mop the showers out after use, but they don't provide a mop to do so. Toilet roll supplies were erratic and unreliable so go prepared. My husband didn't manage to get a hot shower for our entire stay, I had better luck in the ladies but still not very reliable.
On a more positive note the site is extremely well located, right on the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal with lots of walks and cycling options on your doorstep. The onsite bar is useful and cheap - they were doing a good trade on food although we didn't eat there. There are a couple of nice pubs in the village, which is an easy walk along the tow path. The weather was fab too.

This Easter weekend at Gilestone we have had some serious problems, and I am just writing in to pre-empt the possible comments that may be posted by people that are unhappy.
We had a major problem with our water supply (we are bore-hole fed), which we found out about on the Thursday morning. After a few hours of frantic phone calls, we were told the soonest someone could come out to us was Tuesday morning-obviously very bad news for us!
I then had the job of ringing around several dozen people to cancel their weekend.
It is the last thing we wanted to do, but it was totally necessary.
This is just a quick note to say that this has never happened before, and if any unhappy people do put comments on here, this is the truth.
Yes it was unfair to ring people the day before a bank holiday, but in the circumstances it was all we could do.

What a great weekend the weather was superb. Great site kept spotlessly clean and superb toilet & shower facilities.
Some great walks from site, not having to use the car for 3 days was another bonus.
Big marque serving very reasonable drinks £2 a pint! Also the food looked great and again very well priced although we did not try as we had the dog with us. There is also free entertainment on weekends, some previously have noted the noise although it was not noticeable from our pitch.
Will definitely be going back.

This was my second stop for an End to End of the UK. Got a bit lost, due to popping the incorrect postcode in my GPS, but phoned the site and got excellent directions. Was given a superb pitch in a sparsely populated field (entrance was a little churned up and muddy, but managed to get through it). Nice little shop on site, and the recently developed shower block was probably the best in my entire trip. They also had a bbq laid on for campers in the evening. Not far away from a canal side walk, and there are also other nice walks in the area - Talybont reservoir is about 2 miles and a quiet walk. Only problem I had was in the morning I was hoping to leave at 0630hrs, but the barrier was down until 0800. Went for a walk around the area, and when I returned was told that the exit was open and at the other side of the site, so I could have left earlier - but it's entirely my fault for not reading the (as I discovered afterwards) prominent and multiple signs indicating the exit! Lovely location, well worth a visit.

Stayed there bank holiday weekend.
Good location for exploring Beacons, 6 miles from Brecon. The site seems orientated towards caravans, tents are second class customers. We were in a field with over 80 tents and about dozen caravans, this was an addition to the rest of the site. In the portacabin were 3 gents and 2 ladies toilets, no showers. Washing up facilities and chemical toilet point were in the field opposite, no hot water. The new toilet block was about 5 minutes walk for us and longer for those on the other side of the field.
It was necessary to go through a large mud patch to go through another muddy field and then another mud patch to get on the exit road. Cars were towed off with a tractor, which was also towing caravans in.
The food in the tent was good value, and a takeaway was cooked while we waited having got soaked putting up the tent. It seemed a lethal mixture of rainwater caught in containers from the tent roof and electric sockets underneath.
A plus point was that dogs are free and there good exercise facilities.
It seems reading the other reviews little progress has been made to organise this site, children were being used to control traffic entering and leaving the site.
We read the reviews before we booked and were not too surprised at what we found. If the weather was fine we might go back again but only as a second choice. Of the 5 sites we have used in Wales this would be at the bottom of the list.

Much as the other August review said. This is a beautiful campsite, outstanding location, and a very large camping field in which we could camp where we liked! I believe barbeques are allowed in the camping field as well.
The caravan field seemed to be full of a 'rally' of campervans/caravan, but the facilities stood up well to this despite being full (tent field was no where near full, as its so large).
It was muddy in the spots where lots of traffic passed, but the site did the best they could, cordoning off some routes, and with bark chip down in places.
An excellent campsite that I would go to again.
There is a HOWEVER - the noise from the 'entertainment' went on until 11:30, and, I guess because of the wind direction was very clear from the tent field at times. Also the 'fairground' rides piped out music which was very loud as well, even in the afternoons. I suspect this was because it was Bank Holiday weekend, but I would just check next time that there wasnt such late entertainment, as that is not what I am looking for.

We have just spent 2 nights here. The children loved it, there was a small funfair on site. We were placed in a large field which was flat. There were basic toilets there. However there was a large shower/toilet/laundry and dishwashing facility by the little shop which was spotless and had piping hot water. There is also a marquee with bar/food facilities. All beer/lager/cider was £2 per pint and there was entertainment laid on as well. I love the pubs in Talybont (10 min walkaway), but I found they couldn't compete with the prices and entertainment laid on by the site. We liked it so much we are going back in 2 weeks.

Just back from four nights at Gilestone - we had a great time.
The good stuff -
Lovely locations, great scenery
Proximity to Talybont - nice pubs, little shop
Plenty to do in Brecon / Abergavenny etc
Camping fields well kept, clean
'Quiet after 10:30' policy well signposted and policed
Small on-site shop and food/beer tent
Reasonably priced
The bad stuff -
Poor toilet block (on upper camping field, at least) - frequently out of loo roll, dirty, door locks broken
Ugly car parking - I realise that they're trying to build new facilities, but I gather it's taking too long, and is in marked contrast to the rest of the pretty site
We'd (there were a few of us) all be happy to go again - it's a very nice site.
They do need to get the new showers / toilets finished, and tidy up the ones in the camping field, though.

We've stayed at Gilestone approximately 5 times this year and enjoyed every time. Chris & Geraint, the owners, are a fab couple who work really hard and have big plans for the site. There is another field which at present is little used and they are planning to utilise that for camping and install a big lake at the bottom of it.
The shower & toilet facilities could be better and they have submitted plans to improve them but are being blocked by a campaign to shut them down by other sites in the area. They seem to have limited staff who multi task therefore the cleaning of the loos is not regular. In the afternoon/evening they could be rather dirty especially if it had rained. The showers by the top field are in a portacabin. Privacy is not very good, the entrance door to the shower changing area is by the side of the main entry door so you were on view to anyone entering the portacabin if the door was opened by a woman coming in or leaving. The showers themselves were erratic in temperature and only had 1 shower curtain for privacy but the last time we stayed there they had put another shower curtain in front of the shower cubicle so at least you could undress/dress in private.
We have stayed in the top field and had EHU everytime. It is a bit of a pain because no cars are allowed to park there but this is for safety reasons. Geraint explained if there was a fire the exit was not big enough for vehicles to leave in a rush. There was a sink in the field to wash dishes but it only had cold water so we used to boil the kettle and wash by the tent. There were a few wooden tables & benches in the field which were quite handy to sit at if there were a few families camping together.
The first few times we stayed there Gilestone did not have a license to sell alcohol so everyone would take their own to the marquee but the last time we stayed they had been granted their license. Cost for a can of lager was £1.50 which I thought was pricey! The food was lovely but get there early, they were extremely busy and one time we waited 50 mins for our meals. They also tend to run out of food & will replace whatever you ordered with the something else. I requested a half chicken and received a chicken breast in a bun and a big smile from Chris. They sell an excellent BBQ pack which is very reasonable and very tasty. The shop is adequate for basics but Brecon was only a short car journey away.
All in all it is a gem of a site despite its little problems. The views were stunning from the top field, to sit by the side of the canal and chat to people on the barges as they were passing was really relaxing and a few minutes walk away was the little town with a few pubs, again with staff who were very welcoming. We will definitely be visiting again.

We visited this campsite for the first time from the 22-27 August 2007. We picked this site as the reviews were mostly positive, and it is ideally located for the hill walking we did. There were 5 of us staying in three tents (no electricity hookup required) What we liked about the site: 1) It is really well locate, with easy access to a lot of walks and trails withing 20 drive, or from the site itself. 2) Talybont town centre is only a few minutes walk and had a few pubs, a post office, and such. 3) The field we stayed in was large, grassy and flat and made pitching the tents easy. 4) A small shop on site provided us with the ability to purchase fresh produces such as milk and bacon. 5) The staff/owners were very friendly. 6) The cost of camping in tents was reasonable. What we did not like: 1) Initially when we arrived, there were only a few tents, and thus the facilities were adequate. As the weekend arrived, the whole of the campsite became too busy for the facilities. 2) the facilities were inadequate for the number of guest allowed to stay at the site. The main toilet block had only three gents cubicle and three urinals, which meant that using the facilities in the morning (from 8.00) was practically impossible, and the state of the cubicles left a lot to be desired. The main gents shower block had only 6 showers and again large queues were seen, and the hot water ran out a few times. There are no dedicated changing facilities, and thus made it difficult to get undressed, dressed in the shower block. The ladies facilities were slightly better, with a mother/baby room, hairdryers and hair straighteners. 3) The evening were noisy, and there did not seem to be a no noise policy, and if there was one, it was not enforced. 4) No dedicated hot water washing up facilities. Overall impression: This campsite has the potential to be a nice site. They either need to improve the facilities significantly, or reduce the numbers of guest they allow in. Scoring: 6/10 (started as a 7/10)
