 Stunning. Beautiful. A little piece of heaven. We stayed here for one night on our journey home from Cornwall, we only wished that we were able to stay for longer. The pitches are all on different levels, and surrounded by a variety of mature trees and plants. The jasmine in particular was wonderful. Rather than use this place as a base for exploring the local area, I would probably be more inclined to remain on site and soak up the beauty and tranquillity of the place. We had two teenagers with us who were happy to do just that. The lake with the free rowing boats was fun, they were content to play cards after that and were very reluctant to leave. Although I can imagine that it might not be to everyone's taste, we loved the toilet/shower/washing up area. It's more undercover than indoors, but it is very well thought out, and fits in beautifully with the campsite. We will definitely be regular visitors here. Just writing about the place has filled me with a lovely feeling of peace and tranquillity.

This is a campsite in an absolutely stunning and beautiful location. Lovely grass pitches, amazing wild life and birdsong and so peaceful at night. The toilet and shower facilities were kept very clean even though they are a little rustic. However they do fit well in the setting of the site. Chemical waste disposal, W/M & T/D together with a free to use freezer (for ice packs and ice cream etc) are all available. Plus 2 w/u sinks complete with hot water. Dog friendly with some lovely walks around the site. Fishing is also available as is boating on a small lake which is FOC for the children, together with a reasonable play area with some simple goal posts. We understand that caravans are now going to be discouraged from using the site due to both the tight access at the bottom of the very steep lane that descends into the Vale. Our only criticism was the cost we felt that £22 per night for tent 2 adults and a dog no EHU was a bit steep. The previous 2/3 nights we had paid the same amount for a 5* site in Cornwall with fully heated and superbly appointed facilities. However the owners employ 2 really great wardens to run the site and this must have an effect on the charges made. Despite that we will return to this gem of a campsite.

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Andy and Jude (Site wardens). Having been directed to our pitch we had to wait a short while till the rain passed. Thankfully we then had glorious sunshine while we set about pitching our tent.
The pitch we were given (number 19) was very spacious allowing for plenty of room for our medium sized tent, windbreak, chairs, table, BBQ, car etc.
The site itself is set down in a valley that is the most beautifully tranquil scenic place for a campsite.
Although it was just my partner and I that stayed there is enough for kids to do there with a decent sized playing field and loads of space to explore
There are very adequate toilet and washing facilities on site which are kept spotlessly clean by both wardens. The site I know has received negative feedback in the past due to the showers producing little more than a dribble and being lukewarm at best. Thankfully they have a new boiler system fitted now which produces more power and heat than you really need and was easily the best shower I have used on any site. Only on one day did we notice that the temperature in the showers had dropped, however we mentioned this to Andy and Jude who had this fixed later that afternoon.
There are 2 spacious sinks to use for washing up with both hot and cold water available.
They have a small chest freezer available to use (FoC) which is handy for storing ice blocks and the much needed ice lollies on the hot days we were there.
On the side of the washing/toilet facilities there was a washing machine for the campers use. Although we didn't use it we were told it was £3 to use.
There are a total of 4 lakes on site with the first one having 4 rowing boats that are free to use (life jackets available from wooden cabin). The fourth lake is available for fishing at just £5 per person per day. Apparently there are Carp and Tench to over 20lb, but we never saw anything over 4lb on the one day we fished. There are however literally thousands of very small Rudd though which are very keen on eating bread and sweetcorn that was being used as bait by us and others while we were there. We felt that the fishing lake would be more suited to parents teaching there kids the joys of fishing for the first time rather than more experienced anglers
The site we found to be centrally located to numerous places of interest including Longleat, Wookey Hole, Wells, Glastonbury, Clarks village in Street, Fleet Air arm Museum, Haynes Motor Museum. All of which were roughly a 30 minute drive away.
I'll finish by saying that if you are after a well run, peaceful, tranquil site set within the beautiful Somerset countryside you really need to check this place out.

Well, we booked on to this site at the last minute when planning a visit to the area. What a delightful site. The setting is just magical and the wardens are so helpful. The only tip I would make is dose yourself up if you are a hayfever sufferer and visiting in June/July. On the flip side of this, the plants that proliferate the site are lovely. My only slight criticism would be that the shower was cold on one morning (no charge for using the showers by the way). Can wholeheartedly recommend it and we will definitely be visiting again.

I won't repeat too much what others say about the beautiful location of this site, it is gorgeous, amazing views in a beautiful valley, very quiet. As we drove down into the valley our first words were 'wow'!
It was lovely to see the kids making friends, exploring and inventing their own games along the grassy paths and gardens and doing what kids should do.
Lake also popular with kids with free boats to use. It also does not have loads of pitches which is what we like. Non electric pitches on grassy crescent nestled amongst well established shrubs and trees. We had an electric pitch which was very roomy with amazing views, pure peaceful bliss.
There is a freezer for campers to use for ice blocks.
Wardens were very welcoming and helpful. They offered us use of walking maps etc. While we were there. In the evening we walked to the Three Horseshoes at Batcombe, lovely walk through the valley and meadows and great food at the pub.
As someone else mentioned, unfortunately the showers let the site down and desperately need looking at. I have no problem with the rustic-ness of the shower and toilet block and they were spotlessly clean. However the shower was merely a dribble and as they are quite 'open' there was a chilly breeze blowing through and when I was totally wet the water went off completely mid shower or went from warm dribble to ice cold dribble brrr! For a weekend you could possibly rough it but probably wouldn't be ideal for longer, especially if you have to get the kids under them!

We stayed at Batcombe Vale in May 2015 and apparently were the first visitors of the season and the site is also now under new ownership. Wardens Judy and Andy gave us a warm welcome and despite them being newcomers to the area had surprisingly excellent knowledge of Somerset. Batcombe certainly is in a Vale, the long descent drops you down to the pitches which are set in the most glorious of gardens, (not manicured) with lakes for boating/fishing, walkways through an abundance of plants, shrubs and trees. There's a tunnel through bamboo, a wooden bridge to take you onto an island in the fishing pool, it really is an oasis of calm and tranquillity. The toilet block is exceptionally clean and is housed in a rustic style building which blends naturally into its surroundings.
A 15/20 minute walk across meadows takes you into the delightful village of Batcombe with the Three Horse Shoes serving excellently kept cask ales and equally good food. Friendly locals too.
Finally, one point we really did appreciate which only a few campsites seem to offer is the facility to leave your 'van during the working week (assuming the site isn't full)Andy arranged a nominal payment of £1 per night, so the following weekend you just drive back to the site, 'van is already pitched and you've saved considerably on fuel costs, and the campsite owner has an extra weekends fee. Win win as they say.
In summary, we would highly recommend Batcombe Vale.

Just returned from another fantastic weekend at Batcombe Vale. This is our third visit here, and is one of our favourite locations. The campsite location is gorgeous, set in a beautiful hidden valley. Pretty much every pitch has lovely views through the well placed trees and bushes, down the valley and across the rolling Somerset countryside. The views on this site are pretty much the main selling point, but the site is also fantastic for kids - the small lake with the free rowing boats are always a hit - despite having no playground. Here the children can simply be left to entertain themselves, but there are enough hidden paths, trees and open space to play that they make their own games but I've never yet heard anyone complain about being bored - unlike on big sites with amusements and clubhouses!
There are 2 great pubs a walk through woods and meadows. The Bell at Evercreech was very friendly and accommodating. We wanted ploughmans which we've had before and knew where huge, but they weren't on the menu, but they were more than happy to make them for us. Full marks to them. The following day we walked to The Three Horseshoes in Batcombe - booking at the weekend is recommended. The food was again lovely and good value for the quality. They also serve a good choice of very nice local cider, and good service.
The new on site managers were great, very friendly and helpful.
The only issue with the campsite was the showers. We knew they were fairly 'rustic' and were certainly kept very clean, but the flow was not much more than a dribble, and if people are washing up at the same time had a tendency to cut off completely for 10seconds or so, before coming back on. Not great if you are trying to wash hair, or it's a bit chilly. Whilst not the most expensive site, for the money you would expect half decent showers. I hope the new owners invest a bit of money into this aspect.
Big thumbs up for the location. Thumbs down for the showers.

Spent 5 nights here. Campsite is down a steep, maintained track in a lovely valley. The warden directed to our pitch which was spacious and flat. The toilets/showers were kept clean and the showers were free. The hot water wasn't working for a few hours during the day but that was prioritised and repaired by the end of the afternoon. There is no playground for children but there is a small field in the middle of the campsite with goal posts. Also, there is a small boating lake which is good for starting boaters. The warden was very relaxed about payment and we didn't him until the day before we left.
Bruton is a nice town with a selection of shops and a couple of pubs. Gilcombe Farm shop is very close and good for meat and vegetables as well as reserves. Did walk into Batcombe which is a nice village but the pub was shut when we arrived. If you want a proper drinking pub look no further than the Seymour Arms in Witham Friary.

Stayed for 3 nights in August. Arrived in pouring rain but site was fine. Lovely spot in beautiful countryside. Went for a lovely walk, taking in beer and cheese sampling, as directed by the very helpful campsite folk.
Facilities are basic and I guess could do with some investment. They were, however, spotless and plentiful supply of hot water.
Site itself is quiet, relaxed and delightful.
Would suit pretty much anyone.
Not overcrowded, very friendly, not noisy but children very welcome and plenty of healthy outdoor fun for them.
Hope to return.

What a lovely place with lovely people. Visiting with two 6 year olds and a 2 year old, one always hopes a site will be welcoming, safe and appealing and Batcombe Vale really is all three. The boating lake was a great hit resulting in two very confident 6 year old oars people! Everything about the site is clean, functional and easy to access whilst being picturesque. The walk we headed out on ( thanks to Gary's advice, directions and map) was beautiful with a fantastic view of Glastonbury Tor in the distance, made even better by a warm welcome at the three Horseshoes. As locals, this was just a two night getaway but I would strongly recommend the site to people from further afield. Thank you Gary and Barbara.
