This site makes for a lovely a stop over as there are no facilities on the site. The pitches are pleasantly sited in amongst the trees which gives you the feel you are in the middle of nowhere until you hear the sound of the jet fighters from the nearby American Air Base.
Great for plane enthusiasts, our little boy thought it was great. Pleasant walks nearby as well as a lovely pub at the Barton roundabout serving good food. Wardens were very helpful even though it was their first day.

This is a real gem of a site. Although no toilets/showers there are plenty of water/waste points so you do not have to carry waste far. The overall atmosphere set amongst the trees is very relaxing and enjoyable even on a busy weekend.
There are superb walks direct from the site and a pub within walking distance which was both children and dog friendly. Meals were general pub food but very good value for money.
There is a general store within a few minutes walk of the site and shopping in Mildenhall is just a short drive and could not have been easier as the parking was FREE.
Re aircraft noise we only had three aircraft the whole weekend.

A real gem of a site set in a forest. There are no toilet / shower block but only £7 a night with electric hook up. Run by volunteer wardens who where very friendly and helpful. Television reception is poor and the site has no dedicated play area for children but with a whole forest to play in did not find this a problem. The local town has everything you could require including a good Caravan Dealership (M&M). We use it as quiet weekend get away.
The Half Moon pub is part of the Hungry Horse chain so food is cheap and plentiful

To find site:- At roundabout on A11 at Brandon Mills take A1101 towards Mildenhall. As you approach the town watch out for mini roundabout by the Half Moon public house and turn right into Brandon Road. Site is on right in about three quarters of a mile. Access to the site can also be made from the A1065 northbound into Brandon Road and the site is on the left in a couple of hundred yards.
Round Plantation is one of the Caravan Club's minimum facility sites without toilets or showers. It is also run by volunteer wardens as the site does not generate sufficient revenue to warrant paid staff. So in the future it could be a case of use it or lose it! Non Members accepted but no tents. The site often has space so unless you require a pitch with electrics, limited in number, I suspect booking in advance is rarely necessary. As the name suggests the 95 pitches are set out amongst tall pine trees and the site has a forest feel about it. In a past life I wonder if this site was once part of a military facility as there are some pitches on large concrete bases, ideal for big motorhomes! Whilst most pitches are on grass there are a few with a pea shingle base. During heavy rain some areas of the site take time for the surface water to soak away. Television reception is pretty poor with the normal caravan aerial and likewise satellite reception is difficult because there are few parts of the site where you have a clear view of the sky because of the tall trees. Water and waste points are dotted around the site. Because of the way the site is run by volunteers the only thing available from reception is Calor Gas (although during our visit not Calor Lite) Seasonal pitches are available on this site. Our latest visit to Round Plantation was in mid August 2008 and the site is part of what the Club call their super seven group of sites which means that site fees are just £7 per night all in. So really good value and less than many CL's. In my view it would still be good value if it was a couple of pounds a night more and the extra money invested in making small improvements to the site like better site roads, more electric points and a TV booster system.
Whilst the site is generally very peaceful it should be pointed out that it is under the flight path into Mildenhall RAF base which is home to the American transport planes. Lakenheath is also a few miles away. It can be fascinating watching the giant transport planes coming into land, there is even a viewing area not far from the site. However if sudden noise is likely to upset you then it may be a site to avoid, particularly as some of the planes arrive in the middle of the night. There is a newsagents and general store next to the Half Moon Pub (which includes a Hungry Horse Restaurant) and more shops including a Sainsburys Supermarket in the centre of Mildenhall. Motorhomes might have difficulty parking near the supermarket because of height barriers. Also near the centre is a caravan dealer with a good accessory shop, they also sell BP Gaslight. Have been to this site a few times over the last few years as it is close to our home and at only £7.00 per night makes a nice cheap getaway.
Have just spent another enjoyable 10 days at Round Plantation and found the volunteer wardens very helpful and friendly.
This site doesn't have any toilet/shower/dishwashing area facilities and doesn't have a childrens play area. Having said that my son enjoys playing in the woods and building 'dens' and there has always been other children for him to play with.
This is a nice site but could be improved by the simple addition of a cold water washing up sink and a childrens play area (made in wood to go with the overall surroundings)
The ground at the site is very sandy so spent a lot of time sweeping out the awning, the ground is also quite uneven which in a downpour will gather puddles, unfortunately during a very heavy downpour the puddle outside our caravan started to flow into our awning resulting in an in door lake feature which needless to say we could have done without, however the downpour was very heavy and prolonged. After this downpour the wardens cycled round the site to ensure everyone/everything was ok (which was a nice touch)
One thing I have noticed over the last few years of visiting this site is the large increase in air craft noise, when we first visited the site it seemed to be one day a week and some on a Saturday morning, it now seems to be every day, all day which is a bit of a shame as it doesn't go with the rest of the overall peaceful feel of the site.
Having said that we will definitely visit this site again as its cheap and near to home.

This site is a real gem looking out in to the trees of the forest in which it is situated. The wardens of this voluntarily run site were very helpful and at £7 per night you couldnt ask for more . Highly recommended
We need more caravan club sites at this price so please contribute to this one.

Small C.C. Volunteer run site. The pitches are set amongst the trees this makes them quite reasonably private, you can sit out without having lots of traffic pass by you. No shower or toilet block, plenty of bins and water points.
The site was an army base in WW2 so there are concrete bases as well as grass. Motorhomes use these a lot.
You can walk into the woods from the site without crossing a road if you want to, ideal for dogs.
Shop just up the road from site sell's most things papers ect., also pub at top of the road that does meals (not tried them).
The site does have airplane noise but we did not find this a problem as they dont usually fly at night and the tankers fly out in the morning and return late afternoon, the fast jets are at Lakenheath which is just up the road.
If you like planes either bike or walk through the woods oposite the site down to the end of the runway. You can walk in the woods down to the river as well.
Mildenhall itself is a small town with 2 supermarket's and many small shops and a small market, free parking as well. Also has swiming pool.
Bury St Edmunds is just down the road this has most of the high street chain stores and a good market on Saturdays. Also in summer the abbey gardens are worth a visit.
Mildenhall has a good caravan dealer with a good size shop selling most things you would need for camping ect also gas, as does the site.
Speedway is on Sunday if anyone is into that.
We use this many times a year and have never had any problems with it.

August 2005 Wow - a real gem in Thetford Forest. This site at £5 a night is fantastic. We arrived late - 7.30 p.M. In the rain and the wardens came out of their own van to help us. Very quiet (apart from the odd plane from the RAF bases), peaceful and if its total relaxation you want then this is the site to go.

May 2003 This is a small wooded CC site and perfect if you like little hideaway hook up pitches amongst the trees. No shower block though. Hungry Horse pub with small garden within walking distance, with a varied and inexpensive menu suitable for families. Ideal for the Mildenhall airshows or just to sit and watch the occasional US plane flying overhead.
