The site can be found 10 minutes from the port. Your can't book a pitch so just turn up and pay.
Pitching is varied depending on your unit and preference to location. We pitched right on the edge of the dunes but you can pitch in a more sheltered location (if available). The view from your tent is spectacular. The sandy beech stretches for miles and is flanked by hills and mountains. Cloud permitting you will get a fantastic sun set at night across the bay. The pitches are all grass which can be long in some areas so be prepared to pitch with flexibility, a good walk round the site before pitching is a good idea to find those secret and ideal locations!
The toilets and showers (only used the gents) need a re-vamp. They are clean and hot water is always available but only have one shower. A lick of paint is all that's needed. Washing machine, tumble dryer, telephone charging all available payable locally. Two sinks for washing up in the same block as facilities. Two fridges if required.
As per previous comments on rules, there are a lot but personally found them entertaining to read whilst washing the dishes. The site seems to be run a little old school but we can understand why the rules are there, staff are very friendly and helpful.
There are only two camping sites on Islay, here and Port Charlotte. We did visit the site at Port Charlotte when driving by. It seems to have better and modern facilities with a children's play area and restaurant but lacks the WOW factor, vista and charcter of Kintra Farm.
Our weather for the week was very sunny except our last day where we had to take down the tent due to heavy winds. Be prepared for heavy winds and rain. Whilst we have a good quality Sunncamp Oasis 700 tent, we and other campers were taken by surprise the the force of the wind. The elements are a risk here but for us it was well worth it and this shouldn't put you off visiting as long as you are prepared.
No need to tell you about what the islands offers, scenery, whiskey and walking are everywhere!

A revisit after a good stay in 2008. Nothing much has changed - the site is still idyllic, and the waves drown out any sounds from other campers.
There are now two fridge freezers so plenty of room for everyone. The site was busy, in the sense that there were plenty of comings and goings the nine nights we were there.
The site was used by quite a few motorhomes, varying from campervan size to the bigger Transit long wheelbase variety. I'm not an expert on motorhomes but I'd guess that the firm pitches around the site suit the heavier motorhomes.
The decor in the gents could do with a refresh, but there is still loads of hot water in the shower and again, I never had to sit and wait to use it.
Still very good value for money, and the basic facilities are more than adequate if you want a good grown up campsite. If you bring children, there's a wonderful beach to play on - but if you want more, you're in the wrong place.

This is a tremendous site. It's ten mins drive from Port Ellen, and is easy to find. Port Ellen is possibly just a little too far to walk to, and doesn't have much in the way of attractions - one small general shop, a pub, and an Indian was all I could see.
The site is a field next to the beach itself, and the pitches are at many different levels in the nooks and crannies of the field. Hard to describe but you can find a pitch that both gives great views and also gives you some seclusion from the other campers. I ended up literally with my tent opening onto the beach, the sea being 20 yards away, and nothing to obstruct my view of Indaal.
You can drive all the way to most of the pitches with no worries, although there are a couple of pitches that might be trickier if the grass is wet and you have a heavy load.
There are three standpipes on the field itself. As mentioned, they cannot guarantee the sterility of the water as it's straight off the hill - you can tell by the lovely brown tint. I drank it all week with no ill effects, and it suits Islay malts very nicely.
The facilities themselves are quite adequate. The toilets and showers are 2 minutes from anywhere on the site; they are clean and there's plenty of hot water. There are 2 sinks for potwashing which were again spotless.
There is also a fridge with a small freezer; sadly it's not big enough really, and this was compounded by overuse by certain parties. That is to say, the freezer section was crammed with coolpacks that obviously belonged to just one person, likewise the fridge was full of food that looked like it belonged to the same family / party, and I didn't quite see the need to chill your broccoli florets! So perhaps a larger fridge or a separate freezer would be a good move.
There is also a token operated washing machine and drier. Not overpriced IMHO, and very handy if you're a family with kids staying a week.
Finally there's a small library of paperbacks - a bit Mills and Boon flavoured but handy I suppose!
The owners were friendly and helpful, and I had no concerns at all with their expectations of me as their guest.
The setting is great - the sea breeze keeps midges away, and the beach itself is clean with acres of room for everyone to enjoy it in their own way.
One hidden gem - leave the site by the track to the south on foot on to what they call the Hill Land. As soon as you reach a ford, cross the burn and turn right to carefully follow the burn towards the sea. In about 2 minutes you'll hear the 20 foot waterfall just before you see it. Be careful on the steep grass slopes, but it's well worth a squint, and you can't see it as well from the north side of the burn.
Other stuff - you'll see buzzards and hares on the road to and from the site, and you will see gannets divebomb fishing off the beach. All major WOW factors for me.
All in all - a totally excellent site, and I hope to return next year for my second crack at the Ardbeg halfmarathon!

What a great site! The water for the whole of Kintra is from a natural source (Hence the need for the owners to say 'Boil it'). We filled our water tank through a filter made from muslin cloth & drank it all week with no ill effect! Put a drop into the islay malts & it releases the flavour! Great sandy beach for swimming & surfing. Hot showers & clean facilities.(Time your shower well as there is only one in each block). Poet Ellen is a couple of miles away is you run out of Malt & oatcakes. Too many attractions nearby to list. Margaret & Hamish very welcoming and the rules are there for your own safety as their farm is a working one with Cows Sheep & mousing cats. I recommend the pitch up by the Hill gate for a bit of seclusion.

There are rather a lot of rules at this site, but it's worth it for a good, quiet site with easy access to a long, sandy beach. A bit out of the way (make sure you take your first night's food with you, the nearest shop/restaurant is back in Port Ellen and the choice isn't great) and you need to boil the water.

We stayed at this campsite before our wedding on Islay in August 2006. We were allowed to camp where we wanted after hearing about all the boundries, rules and regulations that took quite a while to run through! The campsite itself (the only campsite on Islay) was stunning, really basic and right on the beach. However, the prices are (we found) quite expensive and we payed around 14 pounds a night for a 2 man tent. Now comes the negative bit. The owners of this campsite are really not friendly. The first night we were there, the farmers wife came into the toilets where I just had a shower and had (I thought) cleaned up to a good standard and demanded that I clean the shower again, before getting angry and doing it herself. I have been on many camping holidays, always left the facilities as I have found them and I have NEVER been spoken to in such a way by a campsite owner. For this reason, we will not be returning to this campsite, although it is a shame because the views are spectacular.

September 2005 What a view! Camped for three nights on the sanddunes and watched the flat surf roll in. Private, calm and tranquil. Quite a trek to get there, and the driveway badly needed resurfacing. Watch your suspension! There are LOTS of do's and don'ts (increasing daily!), all listed in the washing area. Mud brown drinking water was provided by a standpipe, but was told to boil it before use. Tokens for the laundry facilities were impossible to get hold of, and after 3 days we gave up. Islay is very isolated, and Kintra Farm is ideal to get away from it all, but take water and handwashing washing powder!

July 2005 Recently returned from this beautifully situated camp site on Isla. To my knowledge, it is the only campsite on the island. We were allowed to pitch our tent anywhere we wanted in the grassy dunes, within certain outer boundaries. The facilities in the converted farm buildings were clean and well maintained, but when we were staying, the men's shower (only one each in the male and female sections) was in the process of refurbishment so men were requested to use either the women's shower if it wasn't in use (!) or ring a doorbell and use the one in the farm house. A bit disconcerting to go to the loo in the women's section and discover a man about to use the shower cubicle, which was also VERY small. Also there were LOTS of rules/requests about what to do and not do as regards the showers/washing up/washing/pitches/booking in and out, etc. ,and to access the facilities meant opening and closing a heavy large metal farm gate - but then it is a working farm.
On the whole though it was a very pleasant site, if a bit remote from Bowmore the nearest and only decent sized little town. Lots of distilleries to visit on Islay if you like whisky but apart from lots of walking and cycling there's not much else to do except to explore the island by car or relax on the site.

July 2005 Beautiful location and fairly remote. Facilities not up to much (ladies shower usually not working and toilets without loo roll! No where nearby to get provisions)
