We stayed here in September - Atlantic Ocean incredible - enjoyed watching the surfing! The beach has stones as the top and sand at the waters edge - but unsafe for swimming due to large waves and under-currents. Try the celtic seaweed bath - an experience not to be missed. Site staff very helpful - able to recommend good Restaurants. Site kept clean and tidy. Surrounding area has a lot of history - visit Lisadell, Mulloughmore, WB Yeats Grave.

For me there is nothing in the world to beat waking up to the glorious Atlantic stretching out in front of you, the majestic Knocknarea mountain rising directly behind you, and the incredibly dramatic profile of Benbulin catching your eye to the North-west. Our second visit to this campsite, this time our first outing with our new (second-hand) trailer tent. Previously we'd camped with our trusty vango tent.
The campsite has a seperate area for tents, and you can hide your tent away in the dunes for your own bit of peace and quiet. For caravans and motorhomes there are electricity points (is that the technical term?) and hard standing. The beach is literally at the edge of the campsite...and its bliss to tiptoe through the dunes in your PJs to give the dogs a good run at 5am in the morning, and enjoy the solitude of having the whole beach to yourself.
The showers and toilets were meticulously clean all through our visit, as indeed they were the first time we stayed there. We don't make use of such things but I believe there is a campers kitchen and washing machines available for use too. There's a TV and Games room, a freezer for those using ice blocks, and the office/reception is open from 9am to 10pm.
Literally right next door to the site (less than 5 mins walk from the farthest point of the campsite) are a choice of bars and restaurants, including a sublime chinese restaurant (Jade Garden) and the new addition of a pizza takeaway. The bars are lively, and offer live music most nights through the summer, both traditional music as well as contempory...but be totally assured, if you're not looking for lively evenings the noise from the bars doesn't seem to travel to the campsite, so a quiet night in is just as possible. There are two shops within walking distance of the site, one on the sea front and one back up the hill (gentle slope), both of which stock almost everything you may need during your stay...and if you find they don't have what you want then Sligo town itself is less than 10 mins drive away. Also in Sligo town is the award-winning camping shop 'Call Of The Wild' for those little tent mishaps that can happen to the best of us, they also stock hiking and walking equipment in case waking up at the foot of Knocknarea every morning is giving you a yearning to investigate Queen Maeve's cairn at the summit. Not sure if the website is up and runnng yet, but have a look at www.callofthewild.ie
The small resort of Strandhill is a mecca for surfers from all around the world, but the *average* beach lover is every bit as welcome. However, there are signs saying that swimming is prohibited and that there is no life guard on duty. Plenty of people were seen swimming when its calm, at their own risk I guess, and when its too rough to swim then you can enjoy watching the surfers.

Grest site 8K from Sligo- town of Strandhill on the airport road- don't worry It's a tiny airport not Heathrow so didn't disturb us at all. Tent pitches were in grass covered dunes yards from the beach(not suitable for bathing)but popular with the surfers. A bit expensive at 17 euro a night but the tiolet/showers were very clean, we didn't make use of any of the other facilities. There are two great pubs 100 yards maximum from the site, one of which has a two restaurants, one specialising in chinese/malaysian the other steak and fish as well as good old pub grub. There is also a take out Pizza shop beside the pubs and a spar a few minutes walk.
