Just returned from a wonderful holiday. We can highly recommend this site, we originally booked for a few days, but ended up staying for 12 nights. We had our 14 yr old son with us. We found that all the facilities, entertainment and retaurant very good. We did lots of fishing and enjoyed fresh trout for our supper one evening. Our son made friends with the Dutch/French & English children, and was never bored. The owners are the friendliest I have ever experienced on a campsite, and there staff were all lovely. Congratulations on getting the balance at this beautiful site just right, beautiful setting, rustic feel. But just enough going on for the youngsters without spoiling its tranquillity. We will return! Thanks for making our holiday so wonderful.
The Small family.

We have stayed at Castel sites before and were looking forward to bit of luxury on our way 'down south' and had booked a luxury pitch. A luxury pitch is supposed to be 200m2 and had a fridge, bbq, table and 4 chairs(we are a family of 5), 1 sunlounger and lockable shed. On arrival we were shown a rather cramped small pitch and after complaining were given a larger ptich. Although I have no specific complaints about the site, we felt it lacked the slickness we've seen at other Castel sites. The restaurant was fine, kids club good, loo blocks regularly cleaned, but we paid a lot for our 3 night stopover. Most of the staff were Dutch which meant we spoke little French. There is a nice indoor pool, but we too felt there wasn't a huge amount to do nearby. The campsite shop is not great and the nearest supermarket is in Joinville, at least 15 mins away. My husband enjoyed fishing for trout on site and my tip for any campers would be to buy some metal pegs for very rocky ground, as pitches were very stoney.

This is a big site and whilst the surrounding countryside is beautiful, we didn't think there was much to do. The campsite is very well maintained and the several shower blocks are always being cleaned and always open. It is hilly, and there are terraces. The swimming pool is inside but there are sunbeds outside and it is fine. The bar does a happy hour, but it is not very happy. We thought that the staff were very young and inexperienced. It was not easy to get ice with your gin and tonic and they preferred to chat to each other rather than to the customers. The restaurant was fine, good food and good service, not too expensive. The bar and restaurant are by the river and it is a pleasant spot and a lot of people were fishing.
The pitches are large, flat and hedged mostly. There are mobile homes to rent but these were empty when we were there. It is quite a drive to get to the supermarkets. You can buy a password for the wifi. At the end of June, the site was quiet and without atmosphere. It may well be livelier later in the season.

We're a family of six, two adults and four kids, aged 2,6,12 & 13. This was our first ever camping site stay as a family and we chose this site as a first stop over on a three day trip down to a ten day holiday in Tuscanny. We all loved the site and the kids all asked if we could stop there again on the way back home, which we did with pleasure. So here's why we all loved it : We didn't book but just stopped on the assumption of getting a pitch as it was only late May for our first stop. Customer service was very friendly with the man on reception letting me try my poor French before asking if I would like to continue in English. Gave us a choice of pitches and said just to let him know if we settled on a different pitch to the one he'd originally suggested. We were close to a shower/toilet block and the lake and swings and slides. The facilities were immaculate and they'd even thought of a mini toilet for potty aged kids as well as mini shower. Our youngest two loved the swings and slides, bouncy castle and tricycles, whilst the eldest enjoyed the football pitch and volleyball area. The big attraction for all though was the heated indoor pool which remained open until 10pm ( superb when you're on a one night stop over and arrive late in the day ). Having read other reviews here - The chlorine didn't seem any worse than our local swimming pool and we all felt fine afterwards. We didn't try the restaurant or shop so can't comment on those. There's a kids club on site too, but again we didn't use it as we only had the two one night stop overs. I get the feeling the surrounding area is more suited to a quiet countryside holiday and perhaps not suited to young families?, and I wouldn't want to spend longer than a day or two confined to a campsite, no matter how good. So as a one or two night stop over for us this site was all we could have wished for. I think it's telling that the only criticism we have is that the ground is so rocky and hard that it was a struggle getting the tent pegs in and out and we bent lots of pegs, but that's just the way the geology is there and nothing the owners could do about that. Overall then. A massive thumbs up from us and we'd definitely stop here again as part of a trip further afield.

We stayed for two nights at the very end of June - so it was busy but not packed - and the staff let us choose our own pitch which worked well.
We have a tag axle MH (and I hadn't mentioned the narrow entrance to the 'other half') but it was just okay to get in. Quite pleased though that their one-way system meant that we didn't come out that way.
We've stayed on various Castels sites - all out of season - and have liked them all, but somehow this one is probably our least favourite to date. The indoor pool smelt of chemicals, the campsite as a whole seemed airless, the shop didn't open when it said it would and didn't stock much anyway. Perhaps we just don't suit high-season trips!

we are a family of 7 and have stayed at this campsite almost every year for the past 10 years. We love it and feel it has a wonderful atmosphere- but maybe that's because we now have a lot of good associations with it!
Having said that we only ever stay a night or two enroute further south or east and I wouldn't contemplate staying for my whole holiday here- not because of the site, because of the weather and the fact that there really isn't much to joinville and its a bit far off the beaten track.
we have always found the staff pleasant and helpful and the facilities clean and well maintained. Our kids love the pool and we love the fact that it stays open to 10 at night and is indoors. However weve had a few sore throats because they tend to use way too much chlorine at times.
I wouldn't write this site off and I've been quite surprised at some of the more negative comments but there again everyone is different and we don't all want the same things from our holidays!
A few other things to note- there is a supermarket about 5 miles away , good stopover on way to switzerland for example, we've never had any problem booking 7 onto a pitch.
We have a twin-axle and while the entrance is a little tight its fine if you slow down and swing wide-in other words be prepared for it!
Yes there can be a lot of wasps so again be prepared and if youre allergic maybe avoid.

Very pretty setting, lots of little playgrounds (unfortunately we weren't sited next to them), good pool ideal for wet weather, bit of a trek up to the (quite well done) loos and showers, expensive restaurant with friendly Dutch staff, funny animals (the goat standing around nonchalantly on the horse's back is the funniest sight ever!). This site is fine, but I wouldn't bother returning unless we were passing and looking for a stopover. We were going to stay 3 nights but left after 2. It has no soul and was a bit manicured for us. Also, the kid at reception tried to give us a pitch at the very furthest end of the site despite it being very quiet, what was that about? Then he allocated us a pitch near the lake instead, but it was a bit close to all the middle-aged Dutch couples so my husband kept shushing the kids the whole time (they were just playing, not being too annoying). If we'd been next to the football space it would have been more pleasant for everyone, but still lacking in character. Oh, it was very cheap in June though, and happy hour had a glass of wine for 1 euro! And the little shop was fine, although they could have done with telling you to order bread when you check in. Unpasteurised milk in the shop was weird but delicious.

We liked this site.
It is a fairly sprawling hillside site with plenty of room.
Most of the people using it were either British or Dutch.
It was slightly hard to reach some of the pitches as the roads (they have a one way system) have some sharp turns. But the pitches are large and mostly have hedges between them for privacy. Our first pitch was next to a shortcut footpath with lots of people walking past, so we asked to move and that was no problem. Every pair of pitches has its own water, electricity, rubbish bin and grey water disposal, which was excellent. Our pitch did have a lot of little insects flying around, so we had to be careful to keep the screen door closed.
The restaurant overlooks the little lake and the pony and goats (sweet) and had good food - excellent baked scallops! (Maybe the menu has changed since earlier reviews as it didn't seem excessively British to us.) The service was friendly but not always efficient.
The recycling is outside the exit (they don't want the noise of breaking glass near where people are camping), which was a long way from our pitch and my husband got lost trying to get back from disposing of our glass bottles one night. As I said, the site is quite sprawling.
It is a fairly short drive into Joinville which is a pleasant town and the Chateau du Grand Jardin is lovely. We thought the amphitheatre at Grand was very over-rated though.

Finally arrived at site, very tight access for larger units. Very friendly staff, restaurant very expensive not a great deal of choice. We had to change our pitch because of dog mess which isnt ideal, our second pitch was not a great improvement but hey we were only staying 1 night. Facilities were ok not that clean though. Take plenty of insect repellent as wasps were a problem.
After staying at other Castel sites this is not one of the best.

This was a great site for the children with plenty for them to do. Bring really good tent pegs as the ground is very hard. We didn't but they accomodated us elsewhere. The bar and restaurant can get really busy at night as its a drive to anywhere else. Try out the cyle rail for a nice family day out nearby. Everywhere was well looked after and maintained.
