Date of Visit: August 2006 Unit:  Tent

My husband and me camped the last week of August with our 7 year old daughter and 18month old golden retriever. We checked in at reception. They were friendly and helpful and had water outside for the dog. You drive though the site, past all the static caravans and up to the top field on your left to pitch your tent. The trailer tents and caravans are just below that on your left opposite the new toilet / shower block. They have a row of electrical hook ups on your right, and you can pitch anywhere you like.
It was flat with trees all the way round the edge and some trees in the middle. The ground was very hard and we had trouble getting the ten pegs in.
The shower blocks are very clean and new. 2 showers, 3 toilets and three sinks. Showers are free and hot with a changing area in front of the shower. Hairdryer was 20p and lasted about 30 seconds. The mens had 3 showers, 3 toilets and 3 sinks (so my husband told me). There is a freezer outside for ice packs and sink with hose pipe for caravans with toilets. The other end had 2 sinks for washing up, with hot and cold water. The cafe was open during the day, with lots of tables in the garden area, opposite the fishing lake (which cost extra).
The club house had basic entertainment at night for the kids and games room with fruit machines and air hockey. There was a conservatory which was non smoking attached to the bar area. The food was your usual pub grub, burgers, steak pie, lasagna. The swimming pool was small but quite nice, which lead to an outside pool which was very small. There's a play area for kids. The shop is a Co-op which is outside the site just down the road.

We found it an idea site for exploring the island and would definitely stay there again. They are doing a lot work at the back of the site, putting in new caravans. We paid £68 for the ferry from Southampton with Red Funnel that have an area on the top deck for dogs.

Date of Visit: August 2006 Unit:  Touring Caravan
Reviewer: Spederton 5 reviews from this member

Spent first ten days of August here in a touring caravan.  The site is central in the island meaning there is little distance to travel, when visiting anywhere.
Rookley had all the facilities we need: a reasonably sized indoor and outdoor pool (no extra charge), take-away, launderette and a co-op just across the road.
Only 19 touring pitches each with their own electricity, water and waste connection and on flat ground.  The toilet block was shared with the tenting field, holding around 40 tents.  Only two showers for the men, and two for the women, which sometimes caused queues at busy times.  also provided are two sinks for dish-washing and a freezer for ice-packs.
With regards to the showers some people also had problems with water pressure - when all the showers were in use there would not be enough pressure and the water flow would be reduced to a trickle - in the showers, hand basins and dish-washing sinks.  However I always had a shower at 7.30 am and never had a problem with queues or water pressure, so chose your time wisely.  This is a problem that staff know about but don't know how to solve, although other problems like blocked drains and toilets were instantly sorted.
The weekday cleaner was also excellent and even changed the shower curtains and shower mats, even though they weren't dirty (unlike other places I've been to).
Touring and tenting fields are on the top of a hill so can be a bit vulnerable to the wind, but this also means there are good views of the surroundings, and from the top end of the tent field we had a good view of a massive firework display at Cowes for the end of Cowes' Week.
The site also has bar and entertainment, a weekly firework display, many static caravans and a few lakes for fishing - we didn't use any of these facilities but I think the bar is also open to the locals and I also saw a huge fish being pulled out of the water.
Only other comments I would make are that no welcome pack was provided so we weren't informed of details such as time to vacate pitch (although they didn't seem to mind) opening/closing times of the pool/bar/takeaway/entertainment etc.
Electricity is charged extra on a meter, you have to buy a £1 card and insert into hook-up, so for 10 days this added an extra £5 to the cost of the holiday (although you never know when it will run-out!)
Overall though no problems and a nice site

Whilst on the island we also passed by some other sites we thought of going to:
Brighstone - dated and in the middle of nowhere
Whitecliff Bay - Very big and on two sides of a road.
Thorness Bay, Lower Hyde and Nodes Point - all Park Resorts, all massive and very commercial

Wouldn't have gone anywhere else, glad we chose Rookley!

Date of Visit: April 2006 Unit:  Static
Reviewer: Shelldean 15 reviews from this member

 Visited in April 2002
Stayed in a static.

Very quiet in the statics, no cars allowed past certain point, except on departure or arrival days, to load and unload. This makes it very safe for the kids.
Very friendly staff, always willing to have a chat.
Small club / pub and a small cafe/restaurant.
Food was ok, and we ate in the bar.

Nightly entertainment for the kids which kept mine amused (4,7,7 &10)

Didn't use the pool, but looked nice. Given a key to gain access.

Don't recall shop on site, but there is one right opposite the site entrance.

Would visit again, but as we can only visit in the school hols the ferry fares prevent a return trip
