Wasn't sure if we were going to be able to fit in here, as called the day before and there wasn't any room. However, we arrived early and found a place no problem. Campsite was full again by 2pm, so arrive early if possible, as you can't book.

Showers clean and warm, but fairly basic. They also cost 20p. Shops in Arisaig and large co-op in Mallaig.

The best bit about the campsite is the view. Absolutely fantastic. Golden sands and beautiful sunsets. However, can suddenly get very windy as is located on an exposed bit of coast, so make sure you bring extra strong pegs!

Would recommend sea-kayaking with one of the various companies- we went with rockhopper. Half day trip around the islands nearby and saw lots of seals.

Would visit again

A site to remember. The owner, Mr McDonald was very friendly and helpful, the facilities were all we needed and the location superb. There were good cycle rides from the site, North along the coast to Mallaig and Southwards to Rhue via Arisaig.

The sunsets were amazing from the site and there were wonderful views of Rum and Eigg. We did a day trip to Rum from Mallaig while we were staying at Gorton Sands.

Would definitely return there.

What a pretty site. Fantastic views sea and beaches. Toilets and showers are basic but clean and there is a laundry. The owner is a farmer who was busy working in the fields but he stopped to chat to everyone and was very friendly and told us about the history of the area.
Everyone on the site chatted to each other and made each new arrival very welcome. Would recommend this site very highly and glad we chose it above others in the area. Do follow owners directions though as we missed turning and had to take a detour (there is a sign but it blew down)! The turn is by the bus stop!

We can endorse everything already said. This is a lovely site with great views and good facilities which are cleaned regularily. The owner was very nice and extremely helpful.

Keep your wits about you on the approach road though.

We will definitely be back.

This is the most glorious site I have visited to date. I took my daughter and her friend (and our dog) there and we were all blown away by the vista. As mentioned in an earlier review, if you crave peace and quiet, then this is definitely for you.

Upon arrival, the girls pitched our tent and I went to speak with the owner. He was absolutely charming. He told me about the area (ie. The beaches, wildlife etc). We had a bbq at the beach on our first evening and just watched the sunset. Sunsets are something we take for granted in Fiji, but being in Scotland for many years now, I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the sunset on that first evening. With a glass of wine in my hand, bbq flashing on the shore, and striding in the warm water of the Atlantic was just heaven!

At dusk, the peace is disturbed only by the sound of the seals - truly mind blowing.

The next day, the girls went for a swim (along with other people) to the sandbank (or was it an island?). The beach(es) are very safe. It was our first time at Gorten Sands, and we will most definitely be back. Our dog loved being here. Each day, he went down to the beach and wandered about until he was exhausted. So much so, that when we returned home, he was so tired that he slept for almost 48 hours!

The washing up/laundry area was very clean with lots of hot water. There are also showers in this area, and another block with more showers and toilets. Doing the dishes was a joy as you look out to the panoramic view of the isles.

The other campers were very friendly with some returning year after year. We indeed met people from our street and a family who live only a few streets from us. They've been coming to Gorten Sands for 7 years!

There are no shops except at Arisaig - so go prepared.

We were blown away by the majestic view, the friendliness of other campers and the tranquillity that Gorten Sands offer. We most definitely will be back and this time with more people so they too can enjoy this hidden paradise.

Second time on this special campsite! The views and scenery around you are fascinating. We had a pitch down beside the white beach and where able to watch the superb sunsets from our beds in the van (you can see the Cuillin Hills on Skye and the 'small Isles' Eigg and Rhum from the site).

The facilities are good and there is a lot of hot water, always found the facilities clean, though they are not very new.

Definitely recommend this site if you do not care for much luxury, but wonderful scenery and wildlife around you, friendly staff (thanks to Mr McDonald, the owner, who's always helpful) and getting to know other people from all over the world. One couple we met keep returning for 40years now. If it wouldn't be such a long way from Germany to the westcoast of Scotland we would be doing the same.

The site has a wonderful beach and it's own coastline and an island, which is acessible at tide and from which you can watch seals, etc. Have not found a better place to stay up to now!

Absolutely love this site. Visited once a year for the past 10 years. Two lovely sandy beaches, one is accessed only via the campsite and is overlooked by caravans on the front. Safe as everyone watches out for each other's children. Boats are left on the beach, but out of the way of children playing etc. Ideal for Canoeing, boating etc.

The second beach is open to the public. This is a quiter beach, and waters remain quite shallow until very high tide.

This area of coastline is rocky, so boaters should familiarise themselves with the area before they race off and cause damage!

There are two toilet blocks, one on the top field and one lower down towards the beach. Not the best toilets, but they are cleaned twice a day.

There is also a block adjacent to the lower toilet block which has showers, washing machine, tumble dryer, ironing board, dishwashing area and pay phone (the pay phone is in a bad location as when the machine are on you can't hear yourself think).

Showers cost 20p

There is no childrens playarea, but the beaches more than make up for it.

Nearest shop is in Arisaig, which is about 1.5 miles away. The local Spar is usually well stocked. You will also find a post office, restaurant, Arisaig Hotel which does pub food and a cafe. You can also get the ferry to the small isles from Arisaig.

More shops available at Malliag which is about 7 miles away.

Roads used to be all single track, but a bypass has recently been built, so now quicker to get to mallaig (but less scenic).

The campsite accommodates caravans, tents and motorhomes. There are a couple of fresh water taps on the site, but not the best design for filling motorhomes (you have to block the road up).

The campsite is a working farm, so the owner does the maintenance on the site, as well as deal with crops, and his cows who are usually out on an Island. Occasionally the cows will come across to the beach at low tide, but they are soon moved.

Lovely sunsets and scenery. A site designed for those who don't expect all mod cons. Top field doesn't have much views to the beach, but it is quieter up there.

Just to comment on the last review, they've got the showers and dishwashing facilities built or were you trying to put people off. Seriously this is a gem of a site in a wonderful area. Direct access to a sandy bay where boats can be launched.
There are some hardstandings around the bay but a free space here is like 'hens teeth'. There is a larger grass area up from the beach but with no great problem to access. Possibly somewhat quieter.
Showers were twenty pence for four minutes. It was great to be told how long the showers lasted for. No charge for dishwashing. There is a huge bay to the west, which empties at low tide, which provides a huge area for excercising dogs and children safely.
Walkers, boaters everyone but sun-worshippers will love this site. The warden was very friendly and helpful, four of us had booked and he made sure that we were all pitched together. You don't get that on the caravan club sites. Loved it. There is a pub with good meals, supermarket stocking everything in a small space and post office in the village of Arisaig three miles away. Mallaig has a range of shops seven miles away.

This is a great place for people who like to make their own entertainment.

This one of the best sites in the U.K. For friendlieness, location and basic needs. This weekend I saw a calf being born, met loads of lovely people from all over the continent and appreciated the country I live in. This site has no showers or dishwahing facilities nor easy access to shops but come prepared and see my pictures of the most wonderful sunsets. Don,t tell too many as we want to keep this gem to ourselves.
