I recommend this site. I enjoyed my stay and the few small niggles I had were easily outweighed by the quality of the site.

I booked a pitch through the caravan club and I was allocated a reasonably sized pitch which had two mature chestnut trees on it. It was awkward siting the caravan and the electric connection was miles away. I had to borrow an extension lead from the reception. Still the pitch gave excellent shade in 35 degree sunshine! If you book direct with the site you can request a large pitch if you need one but not if you go via the caravan club. I noticed that the water taps and grey waste outlets were quite close to some units and it took ages to fill an aquaroll.

Thats about the only gripe I had. The showers and toilets were plentiful and clean whatever the time of day.

The swimming pool complex was excellent. It was a bit crowded but we were in main season so that's to be expected. Theres a good indoor pool, the crazy river ride (tyres needed),a decent size outdoor pool, another outdoor pool with waterslide and two small children's pools.

The receptionists were very helpful and talked English better than wot I can.

Allow me to recommend some places to visit/things to do.

1. Vist Rocamadour. Its a fair journey from St Avit but worth it.

2. Visit Domme, a medieval fortified town on a hill with a market on some days. Very good views from the top.

3. Take a canoe trip down the Dordogne. Its relaxing and gives you views of Beynac and other riverside towns you don't get from a car. The water is warm and I went for a swim in the Dordogne afterwards.

4. Just take a drive and follow the map anywhere via minor roads and visit some of the many small towns and villages in the area.

A word of warning. Prices in the dordogne region were quite high. It cost 2.50euros for a 25cl beer at any bar and 2.50 for a decent ice cream. This together with the poor exchange rate makes France rather expensive at the moment.

St. Avit Loisirs is situated about 6kms north west of Le Bugue. It is easy to find. From Perigueux take the D710, then approximately 1 – 2 kms before Le Bugue turn right on the C201 (it is signposted St. Avit Loisirs). Follow this road to the campsite (approx. 4kms). This road is a bit bendy and very uneven, but it is the best road to get to St. Avit especially if towing.

St. Avit Loisirs is more than just a campsite: it is a complete holiday complex. Accommodation on site is divided between two areas. One area comprises the campsite (approx 200 pitches split half for touring and half for Eurocamp / Keycamp accommodation) – more about this later. The other area contains St. Avits own accommodation (chalets, apartments, and mobile homes). We stayed on the campsite so I will say no more about the static area other than to say that all their accommodation seemed well maintained and they were well spaced.

When you first arrive at St. Avit Loisirs you will go to reception. Here they will give you a map showing the position of your pitch, a recycling bin, plus documentation to help you enjoy your stay. You will also be given a unique pass code to enable you to open the barriers.

The touring pitches are mainly in a wooded area, and at first sight it looks like people have driven onto the site and dumped their equipment wherever they like. In actual fact each pitch is clearly marked out by trees or bushes, and is reasonably large. The pitches vary in shape considerably depending on the position of the nearby trees. Each pitch is accessed from a small roadway which itself can be quite tricky to turn into, especially with a van on the back of a car. We had more trouble getting our unit around the road system than we did placing it on the pitch. Most pitches will have some shade for at least part of the day. EC/KC tents are situated among the tourers, EC/KC mobile homes are placed together at the back of the touring site.

Hook-up points are dotted around the site. Each point has 6 electricity sockets, 1 push tap, 3 or 4 dedicated taps (for aquaroll connection) and 4 waste water outlets. One thing to be aware of if you book a Super Pitch (electricity / water / drainage) is that you will have to share the utility point with up to 5 other pitches, so it may not actually be on or adjacent to your pitch – probably not a problem for electricity, but could be an issue if you want to connect to water or drainage. We had to change our pitch twice before we found one that was suitable for water connection. Also if you do opt for a Super pitch make sure that reception gives you a key for the tap – we had to go back for that as well.

There are three toilet blocks in the touring area, 2 large ones that serve most pitches and 1 smaller one for a few pitches towards the edge of the site. Each large block is a huge octagon shape with two entrances facing each other. The toilets and shower/basin cubicles are arranged around the inside edge of the outside wall and are unisex. The toilets have dual flush to save water, but sadly nothing to show which button does what. The showers have variable temperature, but are push button so you cannot control the flow rate. In the centre of each block there are separate areas for washing machines, clothes washing, and dish washing. The roof consists largely of opaque glass. This plus the 32 fluorescent tubes that are always on gives these blocks a very light airy feel. The blocks were always very clean inside, but for some reason they did not always smell as fresh as they could (possibly misuse of the flushing buttons). There is one chemical disposal point on the outside wall of each block. If you are camping with a young family then I would suggest you try and get a pitch near Block B as this block has a baby bath facility and the toilets are hung much closer to the floor than Block A. Block A’s toilets are actually a bit high even for adults. Block C (the smaller block) is a more conventional square shaped building.

The entertainment facilities on site are plentiful. These include a fantastic swimming pool complex (including water flume, crazy river (own ring required) and indoor pool), crazy golf, 5 aside football / basket ball pitch, tennis court, table tennis tables, boules pitches, play area and climbing frame. All the facilities seem to be well maintained. In the same area of the site you will find the restaurant, bar (as much free iced water as you want), takeaway, ice cream stall, crepe stall and supermarket. The food on site seemed quite expensive but the supermarket was reasonably priced. In another area on the far side of the site, a very long way from the pitches and main facilities, there is the golf range, quad bikes, a full size football pitch, and archery. It is also here that the site and Eurocamp / Keycamp run their children’s clubs. This area has no shade whatsoever so hats and sun cream will be required.

In peak season the site arranges sporting activities (table tennis, football, basket ball etc.) twice a day, 6 times a week. Evening entertainment is also arranged 6 times a week. This includes parties, discos, bands, karaoke, quizzes – that kind of thing. Evening entertainment usually ends around 11:00 and you can expect to hear some noise on your pitch up to this time. There really is something for everyone regardless of age. Three times a week there is also a late night adults disco. These are held in a sound proofed room so as not to disturb the rest of the site and usually end around 1:30 in the morning. The site has security patrols at night to ensure everyone gets back to their pitch without causing a nuisance.

The closest supermarket is at St. Alvere. Turn right out of the site and follow the signs. It isn’t that large, though. The closest hypermarket is at Le Bugue approximately 6kms away. In peak season the main road into Le Bugue can turn into one very large traffic jam, caused by a small roundabout in the centre of town. The Intermarche hypermarket, unfortunately, is beyond this roundabout. I did, however, discover a different route into Le Bugue that bypasses most of the jam. When going to Le Bugue you will pass through St. Avit Vialard. The main road here goes round to the left (sign posted Le Bugue). At this point turn right and follow this minor road to a junction. Turn left and then almost immediately turn right on the C3 towards Paunat. At the end of this road turn left into the D703. This takes you into Le Bugue and you will join the traffic jam at a road junction just before the offending roundabout. Turn right to get to the roundabout. Take the first exit over the river and the Intermarche is down this road on the right. It’s not as complicated as it sounds, and even though the initial roads are minor we rarely met any other cars.

There are 1000’s of things to do in the area. We love walking and it is a great area for this with outstanding views everywhere. You can also take a canoe trip either down the Dordogne or the Vezere rivers. The campsite can arrange this, but there are cheaper alternatives if you book direct. Le Bugue has at least two major attractions (the aquarium and Le Bournat village) plus plenty of caves, castles, troglodyte villages, gardens etc. Nearby. There really is no need to travel far if you don’t want to. The major towns of Perigueux, Sarlat and Bergerac are also reasonably close by.

St. Avit Loisirs is not a cheap site. In fact it is probably the most expensive site we have ever stayed on. Is it worth it? Oh yes. No doubt about it. The site oozes quality and has something to please all ages. Any family regardless of the age split should have a fantastic time here. I know we did.

Granny, Grampa, Mum, Dad and our three year old all loved our two weeks in St Avit. It's a beautiful, well kept site in a beautiful location. We were lucky to have a pitch right on the edge overlooking typically French farmland. The spacing between the vans was just right which meant our little one could play and make friends but without our neighbours encroaching on our holiday in any way. We were about a 10 minute walk to the main facilities.

The pools are fantastic and well maintained but it did get busy on a couple of days and we didn't always find somewhere to sit. On the flipside we often had the indoor pool to ourselves. We all enjoyed the crazy river and the slide. The shop was well stocked and the staff very friendly. There was a good selection of shops in Le Bugue about a five minute drive away.

We were there during the world cup and the games were shown on a big screen in the recreation hall which was very well soundproofed. We did play crazy golf one evening but I think we were probably the first players of the season and the course needed a bit of a tidy up. Our little one enjoyed the children's play area and we noticed tennis courts were also available for hire. We didn't try the onsite restaurant but did have a couple of reasonable takeways. We also didn't use the showers but they looked clean when we popped our heads in.

The immediate area is fantastic for day trips but French friends tell us the roads become a giant car park during the school holidays - we didn't experience any problems in June though.

If you get the chance do visit the wild boar farm just up the road (heading away from Le Bugue) - the farmer is charming and the walk through the woods is a lovely way to spend an hour out of the sun. We also enjoyed trips to Les Ezyies (prehistoric caves - again fabulous for escaping the midday sun) and to Beynac-et-Cazenac where there is a long, steep walk up to a fantastic chateau which appeared in the film Joan of Arc.

We can't recommend St Avit enough - we loved it and hope to return.

We've stayed on this site two years running in a static and now this year we've bought a motorhome we're thinking of going back again for a few day this year, the site is that nice. When we stayed in Sept the weather was superb which helps I know. We are a couple as our kids have outgrown us and now we're too old and boring but the kids on the site seemed to be having a whale of a time in the good sized clean pool complex.
The site generally has a very relaxed feel to it late in the season. Although the site was winding down towards the end of the season the shop was still well stocked and had fresh bread, pastries etc everyday. Staff were helpful and friendly and when we tried to speak French they always replied in English (yes my French is that bad). The surrounding area and towns are worth exploring and Le Bugues supermarket has a wine festival in Sept.

The sites restaurant is excellent and is used by locals so you may need to book. Didn't use the loo blocks so cant comment but the one at the pool was clean and tidy.

The site itself is nicely laid out in trees with plenty of shade and your not overlooked by your neighbours. We took bikes but you wouldn't neccessarily need them but they were handy.

Overall this is a lovely well kept friendly family site and wouldn't have any hesitation recommending it to anyone.

Our second visit to St Avit Loisirs and the site was still very nice. Unlike the weather. However they can't do much about that.
St Alvere the nearest village is lovely, and the market (once a week) is well worth it. Le Bugue is the nearest big town and has everything needed including a hyper with cheaper fuel and a "pompiste" if you don't like the credit card machines. Plenty of touristy things to do, but absolute must do's:
Limeuill - visit it it's well worth it
Domme a lovely trip along the Dordogne valley to a picture perfect town
The Vezere valley.
The camp site is popular with Dutch, Italians and IrIsh, although as it's linked to the Caravan Club, there's plenty of English too. The take away food is pizza'a and other fast food, which we find the French do badly everywhere. There's a bar of course, and shop, and the shop is not over-priced and well stocked. The near-by hyper means you can get pretty much anything.
Several pools, all well- kept and us early-birds saw the daily rigorous cleaning and fly removal!
The camp site staff were again very helpful, and helped us solve our mobile phone problem with good advice (on where to go for parts).
Pitches are spacious, all having water very close, and you may be able to hook a hose from the sink waste to the disposal points - but not guaranteed.
Toilets and shower blocks very good indeed. Plenty and well-kept.  Of course, the campers might not always be so prisitine.
The site is family orientated so expect some regimented games and nonsense; And noise most nights. The disco is open nightly and as usual the homeward bound aren't always mindful of those who bed early.
We have spent two visits now, and we have no complaints. We probably won't return as we will go elsewhere, but not through dissatisfaction
Great site for families, and for visiting the area. Access roads are a little hairy for about three miles, but this year they are widening them.

This Summer we are heading to this site for the 3rd time ( a first for us as we like to see different places). However our 3 children describe it as the best site ever. It is ideal for families with younger children and also families with teenagers. There is plenty for all ages to do, but we have never been disturbed after quiet time. A wonderful site in a beautiful area.
