We spent 5 nights here and loved it. The site is very easy to find and we were shown personally to our pitch which was large and by the river just as we had requested. The whole site is very well maintained with beautiful flowers/ plants. We spent hours relaxing on our pitch over a glass of wine gazing at the river. Our daughter loved the pool and slides which were some of the best we've ever seen and it was open til midnight and all lit up at night. The sanitary facilities were well maintained and clean too. The shop stocked all the basics but an Intermarche supermarket is only a 2 min drive away in Couhe or for a better choice there is a large Super you at Vivonne only 15 mins away. We spent most of our stay on site but did visit the Vallee des Singes which we loved and would highly recommend. Reception have discounts available for the local attractions which saved us 8 euros on our entry fee.
The only thing we didn't enjoy was the meal we had on our last night, my pizza was burnt and the icecream desserts were all melted, perhaps due to the temperatures being in the high 30's throughout our stay.
Another minor irritant was the road noise from the nearby N10 which to be fair we only noticed at night and affects the pitches nearer reception more. Overall we loved the place and are booking for next year.

What an excellent site. Beautiful setting with river running through and old abbey at end of campsite. Pool complex fantastic and really great fun (especially at 22:00 hrs!) Toilets and shower really clean and lots to use. Small children's playgrounds in a couple of places on the site. Lots of children riding on bikes around site with danger at times!
So good we are returning this summer and the owners who speak great English and are very accommodating have given us the same pitch which are very large and spacious.
Think that the owners attempt to locate Brits together in areas and Dutch in others, but really an excellent site! :-)

This is the third year we have spent our main summer holiday at Les Peupliers. The pool is excellent and is the main attraction. There are 4 waterslides, two jacuzzis and a 'beach'. You generally don't have to wait too long to get a sun lounger, though there is a bit of a problem with people parking towels on them. About 70% of the visitors seem to be Dutch, with the rest mainly French and a few Brits.
Activities are fairly low-key, things like the Karaoke evening are squarely aimed at a Dutch audience. The pool is open to midnight and there are organised games of water polo some evenings.
The loos are old but clean and good. There is plenty of hot water for showers and washing up. Two toilet blocks have been modernised this year.
The elderly pedalos have been withdrawn from the river that runs through the middle of the site. A lot of people now bring inflatable boats and row up and down. It is very pretty at the top end of the site where you get lovely views of Valence Abbey. A few people fish in the river, and there are crayfish in there too. There's a fishing pool with a few carp in, good fun but don't expect it to be championship standard.
The site has plenty of wildlife, we did see the coypu this year but they weren't in as much evidence as previous years. There are a few hoopoes flying around in the trees. This year we saw a squirrel too.
I think the road noise from the N10 is a bit worse this year. Someone should really build noise deflectors to protect this site as I'm sure its a major player in the local economy.
There isn't really much to do in the immediate vicinity. Couhé is possibly the least interesting of the local villages, and the only decent place to eat is the Café de la Poste. Vivonne, a few miles away, is much more lively, with a Saturday market and a variety of shops. Lusignan is very pretty too. Local supermarkets are good, there's an Intermarché in Couhé and a SuperU in Vivonne. In Poitiers there's a huge Leclerc and a brand new Auchan. The Auchan has a filling station that takes UK credit and debit cards.

We had rather mixed weather for our 9 nights in Poitou, ranging from wall to wall blue skies to some of the worst rain I’ve had the pleasure of sitting in in a tent in France! The good thing was that the ground drained reasonably quickly when the rain stopped, however, it couldn’t drain or dry under our groundsheet, which covered a cold damp muddy lake for much of the duration. It was one of those occasions where having a wonderfully shaded pitch was not so much of a blessing, but I was grateful for the washing machine and tumble drier facility!
Nonetheless, Les Peupliers is a lovely site and I think the reviews in the section here do it justice. It’s small enough to feel safe and friendly and would be a perfect place for a chill-out family holiday. I didn’t notice a massive amount to do in the vicinity, especially not if the weather’s poor. There’s the Vallee des Singes 13km away and of course Futuroscope. For two adult history buffs there were enough mediaeval churches to keep us happy and of course the 1356 battlefield and plenty of bread-basket countryside. However, if the weather had been solidly good we’d have easily occupied ourselves relaxing on and around the site.
The river through the site is gentle enough to bob about in dinghies on, people were always fishing in that and the little lake. I wouldn’t say that it was dangerous, but it is unfenced and I would perhaps be wary of going there if your kids can’t swim. The swimming pool complex was one of the best I’ve seen on a small site and the slides (especially the long twisty one) were great - if I was 10 or 12 years old again I think I’d want to return just for that. The unisex toilet and shower facilities were really clean and with plentiful hot water. I think there was a baby bath too.
The only downside for us was the proximity to the N10 dual carriageway (800 metres from the campsite entrance). We live in a rural area at home and traffic is unfamiliar enough to keep me awake, so when the wind was in the wrong direction I did have to resort to earplugs to get a decent night’s sleep. But then I am rather sensitive to such things!

Les Peupliers (The Poplars)
This site attracts a loyal customer base who go back year after year. My family loved it
and want to go back next year too. - French-owned (the Boucher family) - Most holidaymakers were Dutch, with a sprinkling of French and British. - 150 pitches, most reasonably shady for at least part of the day, most directly overlooking the river or the lake or not far away. - No tour operators. - The site rents chalets.
The pool (with slides) is the main attraction and is open until midnight. It is clean and well provided with sunloungers, though people do tend to put their towels on them and disappear. There is an attendant but no lifeguard. We had wondered what the pool would be like in the evenings, but it wasn't rowdy at all. I think his midnight swim was the high point of the holiday for my 13 y/o. There were a couple of groups of (mostly) Dutch teenagers around the pool in the evening, but they were quiet and well-behaved.
Campers can fish in the fishing lake and the river. We saw a bit of competitive fishing, but it seemed to be mostly for people who like to potter.
The river is lovely, very slow-flowing and shaded by trees. There is a weir and a bridge near the front of the site. There are two pedalos on the river, but these had clearly seen better days and I didn't see anyone use them. Almost every evening just as it got too dark to read a Coypu would go swimming . It was amazing to see it swim up the river. Magic! We also saw baby frogs and a couple of stag beetles. The riverbank and the lake are not fenced, which might be a consideration if you had toddlers.
The bar has pool tables, pinball and a variey of games. The restaurant is adequate but nothing special, though they had some wonderful steak while we were there. They had a variety of pizzas but not a plain Margarita (cheese/tomato), which we thought was a pity.
There was a dish of the day (usually moules!) but none of those communal meal evenings that some sites do. There is a room off the restaurant which doubled as mini-club, tv room, eating area at different times.
The shop is well stocked, sells bottles of frozen water, but not ice cubes, rents out EHU's (well, extension cables on a roller). Reception has a letterbox and a good selection of tourist leaflets. There is a decent Intermarche in the village. The nearest big supermarkets are in Poitiers. There is a payphone just outside the main gate.
There are three "sanitaires". The two on our side of the river were old but good (all loos "English style"). There is a more modern block on the other side. There was plenty of hot water for showers and washing-up and everything was clean. We didn't have to queue either.
The evening entertainment was minimal. There was a disco night once a week but it was mostly mums and little kids. The Karaoke attracted a wider range of people. The site also organised little sports events and local evening coach trips with the tourist office.
The website mentions English newspapers, but when we tried to order one we were told the distributor could only get Dutch papers. The newsagent on the square in the village has a selection of British papers though. (And Havana cigars!)
There are low-key activities nearby, canoeing etc and the delightful Valleé des Singes http://www.la-vallee-des-singes.fr/UK/index.html where the monkeys roam free. There's an excellent tiny museum at Rom http://www.musee-rauranum.com/musee_rom/FramePrincipale.html , where the Roman village was apparently bigger than the present day village. A must if you're a Time Team person. The coast near the Ile de Ré is about an hour and a half away, well within range for day trips. Poitiers, 20 minutes away, has a full range of cathedral, shops, supermarkets and the other services you'd expect in a city. Futuroscope http://uk.futuroscope.com/ is just the other side of Poitiers and is pretty expensive but worth it.
This is a lovely site for a traditional family holiday, but it could do with a bit of modernisation - not too much! Just poolside toilets and another shower block nearer the far end of the site. The pedalos need renewing. They could raise their game on the evening entertainment without losing the gentle family feel of the site. I think I'd grass over the under-used mini-golf and have the evening entertainment there instead. The restaurant and reception could do with a bit of a makeover. There are a lot of photos on the website and they show Les Peupliers (The Poplars) pretty much exactly as it is, though I think they overstate the entertainment.

Busy site just off the N10. Family owned and is much improved since our first stay. Situated in very pleasant surroundings on the banks of a river. We stayed only for two nights in 2006, but have previously spent a few holidays here the first time in 1998 as overnight stop liked so much we came back the following year for a long stay. We have been back several times since. The site has excellent facilities which are kept immaculately clean. There is a vast array of flumes and slides just near the entrance and three pools and a jacuzzi, all heated. Pitches have hook ups and some have water and drainage. There are some statics but not many. They also have log cabins for rent which are open all year. The site gets very busy in July and August and booking is advised if you plan to stay more than 5 nights. There is a small basic shop selling bread, croissants and some staple foods. There is a supermarket just up the road from the site which has a much better selection, There are also 2 or 3 restaurants in Couhe. The site has a bar/restaurant which is open from Mid June to the beginning of September. Good value for money and the food is good too. There is entertainment for children during the peak holiday season, and also special nights with Karoake and the like. Boules competitions and ping pong, crazy golf.
