This was the first time we had used Camping Cheques and were a little apprehensive as to whether our Silver Card would work. We need not have worried, all worked OK. The site was delightful. Manicured would be an understatement. The hedges near our pitch were roses and smelt wonderful.
A lovely quiet site with very friendly and helpful staff. All the facilities were always spotlessly clean and in full working order. Our pitch was quite large, but we felt some larger outfits may have trouble backing onto some of the pitches - no problem for us as we have a mover fitted.
The free wi-fi near the reception office was very useful.
There was little to do in the equally manicured village but that didn't bother us. Plenty of shopping available in nearby Rue.
Lots to see and do locally. The gardens at the Abbe de Valloires are superb (12km away) and anyone with any interest in wildlife has to visit the Marquenterre Reserve about 10 Km (if you are a member of the RSPB our other wildlife organisation take you membership card for a 10% discount on admission fees) away.
The bay of the Somme is very pretty although we weren't over impressed with Crotoy. The steam train looked fun but we didn't go on it. St Valery had a superb promenade. Don't miss the Cliffs at Etretat and the area around Treport.
The only fly in the ointment was beyond the sites control. A local farmer had a bird scarer working most of the time but thankfully it always went quiet early evening.
This is a site we have earmarked for a revisit. It's very convenient for ferries arriving in Calais and Dunkerque during the afternoon.

We used this site in June this year as we bought a caravan and didn't want to go too far south on our first journey. We stayed on the overflow part of the site which we found with children was fantastic as they could play with no fear of vehicles. The reception on site will provide baguettes but we found the ones from a local supermarket stayed fresher for longer. Lidl is only a 5 min drive away and the beaches about 10. All in all excellent site and we are going there again next year same time as we had great weather and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't bank on the free wifi as if there is a storm in the area it can be down for a day or two. Just over the road there is a farm where the children can ride the donkeys for 8 euros for about an hour. All in all enjoyable 2 weeks

After a break from camping for many years, and with a couple of smaller additions to the family, we approached our first camping break abroad with a little trepidation. With a new tent and various mysterious and scary looking accessories (dual hob cooker) we decided to have a few days away just across the Channel as a trial run for longer holidays later on.
We needn't have worried. La Val D'Authie is a very nice campsite and situated perfectly for those wanting a taste of French camping without travelling too far from the Channel ports. It's an easy drive from Calais or Boulogne, in pleasant countryside and a few minutes from sandy beaches. Being close to the motorway and a little over an hour from Calais (I don't drive fast!) it would also be an excellent stopover for people heading further south.
As with a previous review below, the pitch we had was slightly stony but flat, surrounded by hedge and with its own water supply. The toilet / shower block was spotless whenever we visited it and generally everything about the site seemed clean and tidy.
The family enjoyed the pool; on sunny days the roof was retracted so that half the pool was open air but it would also have been fine inside on colder or rainy days with the roof closed. There is a small play area for the children in the centre of the site with slides etc and a sandy area, most of which ended up inside our tent after the first day.
There are many other activities elsewhere on the site which would be great for families planning to stay longer. One night when the wind must have been coming from the east there was a bit of noise from the motorway away over the fields, but nothing that would disturb you.
Bread and croissants etc can be ordered for the following morning and collected from reception; the staff were friendly and relaxed even when one of us (ahem) turned up on the first morning having forgotten to bring any money. They were fine about it and just told us to pay them later on whenever we were passing.
Away from the site the small town of Rue has a Carrefour supermarket and a number of eating places, and a few minutes further on is the seaside resort of Fort Mahon Plage with endless sandy beach and dunes. Only slightly further afield, the quiet villages and little ports on the Somme Estuary provide a different seaside experience. One which my stomach could appreciate after a huge lunch of moules marinere in St Valery.
On the way back to Calais we spent the best part of an afternoon exploring nearby Montreuil-sur-Mer - there's no Mer any more, but a town with real charm, a lot of history and well worth a visit.
For our tent and family of two adults and two children we paid €25 a night, which wasn't unreasonable especially if you plan to make full use of the facilities on offer.
Overall an excellent experience and we would have no hesitation in returning to this site.

The campsite is lovely with hedges in between the pitches, flowers and trees everywhere. The toilets and showers are kept very clean. There are not that many pitches for tourers so there was never a queue.
The field at the back is wonderful with an enormous assault course, skating part, enough room to play football, although there is a seperate area for that.
Our pitch had its own water tap on it and we had electric hook up, we used camping cheques as it was low season. We played table tennis, petange and tennis.
The girls used the pool which was heated. There was no evening entertainment, which did not bother us, we went for a walk in the evening and the girls fed the horses up the road grass. It is a great campsite and well worth visiting.

Visited Easter 2009 for 4 nights with our tent which is a Montana 6. Very nice camp site.
Pitches
The pitches are large enough for our estate car, tent, front extension and gazebo and a lot of pitches have a power supply. Be careful though as our the electricity seems to be reverse polarity so take an adapter if you want power.
All (or certainly most) of the pitches are laid to grass with (shoulder high) hedges around for privacy. The pitch we had was a bit stony, but a quick walk over to remove the worst offenders and the use of our groundsheet seemed to prevent any damage to the SIG.
Prices
We paid €28/night which seems a bit expensive at first until you look at the facilities on offer. No extra charge for gazebo or for front extension. They accept camping cheques which can dramatically reduce the cost of the booking. All prices are laid out on the site's website.
Facilities
The site has a very small shop which sells food and milk. Bread (baguettes and croissants) can be ordered for the following day.
Main swimming pool is covered and there is a small outdoor babies pool. We didn't try either as it's still early in the year and was a bit cold at times.
There is a smallish bar/take-away/restaurant on site which offers a fairly good looking menu. Only tried it for take-away pizza one night as we did most of our own cooking.
The toilet/shower blocks (there are 2) were both spotless all of the time. By the time we left (Easter Monday), the site was 1/2 to 2/3 full. Most of the campers stay in caravans or mobile homes, so don't need the toilet blocks which might explain it.
There is a good outdoor walk at the back of the site and some assault course style obstacles such as balance beams, walk over see-saws, hanging bars etc. There is also a bmx circuit if you want to take your bike and a small roller-blade / scooter circuit laid in tarmac.
There is a children's' play area with climbing frames, slides etc. Our only gripe with this is that although the area is surrounded by sand, some of it is raised on a concrete plinth covered by soft-fall covering, but the corners of the concrete are exposed above the sand providing opportunities for children to hurt themselves
Local Area
Locally, there is the Baie-du-Somme which has some nice seaside towns and a steam railway which runs round its edge. There was also what looked like a small theme park nearby, but we didn't have time to visit that.
There are numerous seaside towns within a relatively short drive, all with lovely beaches. Le Touquet is just one that you should visit to see the sand sculptures.
About an hour away is Amiens which is where the 1st World War graves are. If you fancy a bit more of a drive or getting the train for a day out, Paris is 2 hours drive away, or there is a train from Rue which is only just down the road.
Other<
Customer service was as you might expect in France. By that, I mean that they were (are) very efficient, but if you try to leave (as we did) between 12:00 and 14:00, you will find nobody about. The French have a 2 hour lunch break and you will have to wait until they have finished before the reception opens again.
There were 3 British campers there including us. The rest were French or Belgian. Obviously, this might not be typical. Not too many children about, but enough so that if you have youngsters you won't be too bothered about any noise they might make.
There were a few dogs on the site. Not sure if there was a rule about leads, but most of them seemed to be controlled well.

This was our first campsite experience under canvas, and we chose well - the staff were really helpful and friendly. Quite close to Calais, so very convenient for those coming from the UK. A short drive to the beaches - nearby Quend Plage and Berck plage are gorgeous and not at all crowded - further up the coast a bit is Le Touquet Plage, which can get a bit chocka - I remember a French colleague telling me once that that's where lots of Parisiens go for summer hols. En route to Le Touquet there's a massive play park called Bagatelle which looked great - didn't stop as we were researching the coast for the 'perfect' beach - Stella Plage was the best we found - quite charming. From the campsite, we were able to cycle into Rue, the closest large town, where there's a couple of supermarkets and lots of shops - it's just a few minutes in a car, but about 30 minutes on bikes with kids. The petrol station at the Atac supermarket was unmanned, so I'd imagine you can fill up any time.
Toilets/showers all cleaned regularly. Takeaway service for chips to go with whatever you're grilling or full meals plus drinks to take away, plus a restaurant - we only ate there on our last night - the pizzas were very good - a proper thin-crust pizza base. Chips were just fine - we cooked the rest of our food.
Our two boys aged 5 and 10 weren't especially interested in the Mini Club - without enough French, it was difficult for my eldest to follow directions for any games played, but they did put a lot on - huge inflatables / bouncy castles appeared over the course of the week. There was a children's disco towards the end of the week with the camp mascot - some sort of mutant plush Barney / dragon figure, who gives away little booklets and poses for pictures.
Children's playground good - ours enjoyed it, anyway. We didn't buy much from the little shop, but it appeared to have a good, basic range of things available. Fresh bread in the mornings, which we did indulge in, and we paid 2 Euros to freeze our ice blocks down each time we needed to. You can also buy frozen bottles of water if needed (if you forget to refreeze your own, duh).
Midge-like things invaded the tent a few days into the stay and were quite bothersome - bêtes d'orage, they're called, apparently - one woman said they were caused by the recent cutting of the wheat, another said it was because there'd been a storm recently, another said they were just there because of humidity, so we're none the wiser. They got everywhere (bete in a contact lens is no fun), but within a couple of days, they'd all but disappeared again. Would love to know if there's any sort of natural repellent that will work in such cases - citronella candles, perhaps?
It was a very French campsite, with typical entertainments on offer - disco with much dancing formation-style (Macarena etc.), water aerobics, a quiz night. Again, we didn't really take advantage too often, as we were really enjoying teaching our 5-year-old how to play Gin Rummy for the first time, then putting the boys to bed and continuing to play ourselves, if not reading a book, while quaffing a nice local red.
The adult disco did go on a bit late one night (well, 11pm, I think) so we gave up trying to get the kids to bed and let them dance on the bonnet of the car until it ended, making the best of the situation. Fortunately it was just the one night! Remember to take a Speedo-style swimsuit, boys, or you'll end up being marched back out of the pool like us if you're wearing baggy-ish British-style swimshorts.
We did feel that the people that were staying in the little mobile homes surrounding us (which were quite cute) did rather stare at us, but then we have a big tent and extension canopy and had more room than they did, most definitely - perhaps they were jealous! We specified a need for a large pitch when booking and were given a choice of two upon arrival. Pitches have hedge boundaries and it feels private enough. A nice mix of people, no louts, some Dutch, a few other British, mostly French, though, and all there to relax in traditional holiday pursuits.

Well it was our first site we stopped at in our tour through France, Belgium and a day trip to the Netherlands. We arrived late and the staff had informed the Restaurant to keep an eye out for us. They came out as soon as we arrived and gave us a very warm welcome. We were shown to our site which was the largest pitch we have ever been given. Plenty of room for another 3 motorhomes and this seemed to be the norm.
The pitch had the European type socket and we had no converter. Within minutes the helpful receptionist had supplied us with a converter. And to be honest this helpfulness lasted for the full duration of our stay.
We were pitched next to the table tennis area and main hall / disco. Some nights the music went on quite late but nothing that caused any great upset.
The Campsite is not really walking distance to any villages and is in the middle of a small town with no shops but please don't let this detract from this campsite.
Plenty to do for the kids from table tennis to assault courses, Mountain biking to swimming etc etc etc.
If I had to rate this site out of 10 I would give it a 10+++ it had everything from nice staff, nice location, huge pitches, plenty to do, firework displays etc etc etc.
It will be the site we will compare others to in the future.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable weekend at Val D’Authie campsite. As we were only going for a weekend we decided not to use our own caravan but to hire one of the site’s caravans. As there were only two of us we decided to hire one of the Petit Cottages - very small but perfectly adequate for what we wanted. It comprised of a double bedroom, lounge/kitchen and shower/toilet room. It even had a tele and all for only 35euros per night. It would actually have cost us more to pitch our own caravan at the site.
The site itself is very pleasant. All the staff seem very friendly. There is plenty of space for games etc. The site has a football pitch, sports track with 10 different activities, roller skating circuit, table tennis and much more. The swimming pool is also extremely good. At this time of year it is covered and very warm.
We tried the site restaurant twice while we were here and had excellent food each time. It is quite small, though, so I reckon they may struggle in high season. The shop is also extremely small – basically a couple of shelving units with a few provisions on them. We wanted some jam, which they had, so I can’t really complain.
We didn’t really make use of the toilets or showers onsite as we were well provided for in our Cottage, however I did have a peek in them and they seemed nice and clean.
Most of the pitches have been taken up with static vans. The pitches that are left for the tourers seem a bit variable in my opinion. There are some nice, large secluded pitches available but there are also a number of oddly shaped pitches some of which are quite small. I thought a 4-star site had to have 100 sq meter pitches but I would have though that a few of them were smaller than this. One pitch was completely surrounded by static pitches with no privacy whatsoever.
To sum up, it is a lovely site and one that I would have no hesitation going back to for a weekend away. I don’t really think there is enough in the area to keep me amused for much longer than that. Certainly a good stop-over site as it is only an hour from Calais.

Spent a week here in June 2007. Wonderful site, despite the weather! All pitches are surrounded by hedges, giving a fair amount of privacy. All appeared 100m2 or larger, there is plenty of room. Hedges and grass kept well trimmed. Shower Block/Toilets/wash up areas all spotless, probably the best I've seen anywhere. The pool is a good size - very quiet when we were there but presumably will be busier in the holidays. Covered in June by a roll over glazed building, appears to be removed when the weather allows. We used the restaurant one night - good food at a reasonable price. There's a small shop on-site, used only for bread and croissants in the morning (need to order these the day before). Office helpful and spoke English. also on site is a laundry, sauna, running track, boules rink and roller skate track(!) Plenty to do in the area and I would thoroughly reccommend a stay here either en-route to and/or from the ports or for a longer break.

Extracted from Diary from trip.
Mon - BERCK has a Carrefour supermarket, big play area & bouncy castle on site, Colin the cockeral is up at 4am but you'll get used to this depending on where you are will depend on damage to ears! Pool opens at 11am and is heated and partly undercover. Book was good! Berck -Plage is good beach (long, golden and very clean), had icecream and pancakes there. Prom is quite commercial but you can avoid it.
Tues - Kids club, explore very small village and find 2 ponies, swimming and made friends and drank vino!
Wed - St Valery medieval town - walk thru the town, along the prom, go for ride round in train pulled by tractor (english written translation onboard) not expensive,
Thurs - Bagatelle Theme Park near Berck - will be signposted. 72 euros for 2 adults 9yo & 7yo for all day and unlimited rides. Sure you will be able to google this for more info. Take a change of clothes - you may get wet. Good all rounder theme park.
Fri - go to Fort-Mahon plage and like it better - not so commercial. Tide comes in/out VERY quickly. If its out, stay half way down cause you will end up moving very fast. Places to eat on promenade.
Hope that is a bit helpful. All our trips took just over 200km and I'm sure that the beach is not far - cant quite remember but it was not half an hour - if that. Depends on which beach you go to. Table tennis under cover if the weather is bad. Remember the bats. All lights on site go out (except toilet blocks) about 11.30pm I think. Great for noise reduction - remember the torches.
The site is very much in the middle of nowhere thou - no where to walk to unless you like fields! You will have to go out for food unless you have a big fridge cause the shop has limited supplies.
A basically good site and one which I would go back to. Just remembered if you walk round the site there is a huge open space at the back for a good long stroll. Hope this helps.
