We spent 3 nights at this site on our way from Spain to the Vendee.

This is a lovely site. The owners helped us to pitch up, although at first they were quite insistent on us going on a pitch which would have meant manhandling the caravan, which is a twin axle, into place. We would have had no way of levelling the caravan up, and our temperamental fridge would not have been happy with that! However, we were firm, and then shown a pitch of a good size which meant we could reverse on as usual.

This is a picturesque site, with level pitches bordered by flowers and shrubs, lovingly tended. One couple told us they had been coming to the site for 16 years!

This is one of the friendliest sites we have stayed on in France. There was a real mix of French and English campers, with the majority being French.

The toilet and shower blocks are to an excellent standard, and extremely clean. They are mixed gender facilities, but people were respectful of one another, and it wasn't an issue for us.

The site has a bar, a snack bar, a small playground, and an area for playing table tennis and pool. At night, an area just outside the bar was lit up and became a boules pitch. It was lovely sitting outside with a drink, under the beautifully lit up trees watching the games and listening to the friendly banter.

This is a beautiful part of France, with plenty to see and do around the Bay of Arcachon. We went to the Dune de Pyla, which is an amazing sight and the view from the top made it well worth climbing the 170 steps to the summit. Recommended.

We also had a delicious meal at Tanya's Tearooms, situated on Rue Paul Wallerstein, just down from the main square. The owners of this restaurant are English, but have lived in France for over 20 years, and obviously have a big commitment to this community. The food was excellent. The menu was not big, but it was innovative and beautifully presented. I would have liked slightly larger portions, but the overall set meal price was very good value. The clientele were a mixture of tourists and locals. The staff always had time to speak to customers. However, it is the food that sells this place. We would urge you to give it a try.

We would happily have stayed longer at this site, and would certainly go back again.

We left this site with mixed feelings, Lets start with the good,

The area is of outstanding beauty with easy access to the Atlantic beaches which are great for surfing and also plenty of lakes with soft sandy beaches which are ideal for younger children and those wanting to sunbathe without the noise of the Atlantic. Cycling and walking are easy and plentiful in the area as well. The Medoc wine region is nearby and well worth a drive through.

The campsite is clean and very well maintained; the owners are always about doing things and looking after you. The toilets, showers, washing area and pool were at all times spotlessly clean. The campsite was always quiet by 11 – 11.30 at night which for us with young children who always rise at 7am was an absolute boon.

The bar area was friendly and well used most nights with a large French Bowl (bool) area which was heavily used all times of the day and evening. The pizza they sell is superb and not badly priced either. 7 Euro for a plate full.

The downsides

The toilets, washrooms and showers are mixed sex, we don’t find this an issue but some might.

The site is close to a road whilst not being the busiest I’ve known there was always a back ground noise and it also seemed to be the main route to the local accident department.

It is not possible to access the nearby woods or walk directly from the site, those with dogs beware as you do not have easy access to any dog walks.

The children’s playground is small and consists of 2 table tennis tables, a pool table, 2 swings and a roundabout. It is also next to the bar area and the owners were not keen on children being left to play unless you were in the bar. This we found most annoying as one of the things we love about campsites is that our children can roam free in safety.

The swimming pool is 1.5 meters deep from end to end, there is no shallow end. Our son is just 6 years old and only learnt to swim this year. He was not confident enough to use the pool as he could not touch the bottom, unfortunately the paddling pool was only a few inches deep and of no use to him. Eventually after much coaxing he found his confidence but for some this might have been a major issue. After all one of the things you are paying for is the use of the pool.

The pitches are all small; Our trailer tent plus awning filled most of the pitch with the car having to be half on the road across the front of the pitch. This left little room for sitting out and playing, it was also not very nice to sit facing the car all evening. Of the 30+ pitches none were what I would consider to be large touring pitches. A couple of people using campervans and larger caravans found this to be a real issue, There is also no additional car park so that was also not an option.

Great little site. All pitches are clearly seperated, not overly large but plenty for a large tent, Gazebo and car. Nearly all pitches in the shade of trees. Virtually insect free in August which is always a bonus! Very clean swimming pool and a small pool for young children. Easy walk to the town of Ares with shops and market. Excellent Boulangerie within 5 minutes walk. Bike hire next door. No on-site shop but there is a bar serving snacks and simple entertainment in the evenings (boule, bingo, etc). Very quiet though with pool closed at 19.00 and everyone seemingly in bed by 23.00. The whole site is very well maintained and having just spent two weeks there with my family, will quite likely return.

It is within a mile of the Arcachon Basin. A range of beaches within 15 minutes drive from high wave Atlantic seas to waveless beaches on the Arcachon Basin itself. 45 minutes drive from Bordeaux city centre in a sleepy part of France. Great cycling country with many cycle paths through the woods and local villages.

Very good 2 weeks here. Welcoming and helpful owner, always about. Swimming pool small but sheltered with childrens' pool. Toilets and showers immaculate at any time of day. Hot showers. Dishwashing hot water and under cover as was laundry facilities. Large pitches. Excellent centre for exploring Bay of Arcachon and oyster beds. Good boat trips, swimming in calm water in the bay and surfing on edge. Very peaceful.Would go back again.
