Kawan Village Chateau du Deffay is a 4-star site situated a few miles west of Pontchateau. It can be found just west of Le Calvaire on the D33 road. The minor road that leads to the campsite splits the Deffay estate in half. To the left of the road is the campsite, and to the right are the restaurant, bar and swimming pool. The main chateau is also to the right of the road. To find it follow the road that leads behind the restaurant. The chateau offers rooms to let and is not open to the general public.
The campsite reception is the first building on the left of the road. This doubles as the site shop. It is very small but does hold a few essentials. English is spoken here. Bread has to be ordered the day before. You can also buy access to the wi-fi from here and at 3 euro per day or 12 euro for the week, this is reasonably priced. The wi-fi seems to cover the entire site.
Deffay has a rustic feel about it and consists of around 170 pitches, of which 110 are for touring units. These tend to be together on one side of the lake with most of the chalets and mobile homes on the other. There are no tour operators present on this site. The touring pitches are all of a good size although many of them are on a slope. The pitches at the top of the hill and down by the lake are the flattest. The pitches at the lake also have 10 amp electricity and this is where we were pitched. If you choose one of these pitches you may be lucky to see the family of coypus which live on an island in the lake. I think these are the nicest pitches on site although they are quite a way from the one toilet block which is at the top of the hill.
The toilet block is in a converted barn. It consists of three rooms, all unisex, which contain the toilets, wash basins (in cubicles) and showers. The showers are a push button design with no way of setting the temperature, although this was set about right. The urinals are inside the middle room on the far wall with no privacy screening whatsoever. Surprisingly I saw no one using these the entire time we were there. The toilets are kept very clean.
The campsite has a number of play areas dotted around the grounds. Some of these contain exercise equipment similar to the kind found in a gym (although on a smaller scale). There is plenty of space to play on site. There are table tennis tables and also a tennis court. The campsite has pedalos for exploring the lake which are free to use. Fishing is also allowed in the lake.
The restaurant does pizzas as well as other dishes. The food was reasonably good, although one of our pizzas did have a very hard crust. They are happy to do any of their meals as a takeaway. They also do frites to takeaway but other than that do not seem to have a “normal” takeaway menu. The bar is in the same room as the restaurant and has a number of games to keep you amused.
The swimming pool is just opposite the restaurant and is covered in colder weather. We found the water to be a nice temperature. We tried the swimming pool twice and both times we had it to ourselves. In fact while we were here the touring part of the site was virtually empty with an average of only 10 pitches being used at any one time. I’m not really sure why this should be as Deffay is a pretty decent site. My opinion is that it may be because of where it is situated. It kind of sits between two holiday areas – not quite in Southern Brittany and not quite in the Loire.
It is in a lovely area though with plenty to do. The Briere National park is right on your door step. The seaside towns of La Baule and Pornichet are a short drive away. Similarly the salt marshes and the ancient city of Guerande are close by. We also visited Branfere zoo where the animals seem well treated and have large enclosures to live in. Le Puy du Fou with its spectacular shows and grounds is around 90 minutes away but is well worth the visit. It’s a full day’s entertainment so leave the site early and make sure you get there for when it opens.
If you holiday out of season and prefer a quieter site then Deffay comes highly recommended. We were here for two weeks and had a fabulous time.

Stayed on this site for 10 days during August. Fantastic holiday, everything you need on site - shop, pool with opening roof, table tennis, tennis, petanque, children's play areas, trampoline, shallow lake with fishing and pedaloes, go karts for hire.
Very rustic site, with large pitches, not all the facilities were new, but this added to the charm!
Toilet blocks were clean and always had hot water, we didn't have to queue at all. Be prepared for Men and women using same toilet facilities!
Stayed on site and cycled to local villages. Supermarkets nearby for a larger shop - seemed a bit expensive. On site shop stocked basics - fresh bread and croissants everyo morning - you need to pre order the day before - would have been handy to know when we checked in!
Staff friendly - we arrived at 11am and this was no bother, we were shown our pitch but chose another one - most people tended to go under the trees, we didn't however would have regretted this had the sun shone for the duration of the stay. As it didn't it wasn't a major issue.
Pizza restaurant on site - ok but not great food. Sent back my pizza the first time as it was still frozen in the middle!
Mainly British and Dutch on site, a few Spanish, German and French - very quiet site no rowdy groups or noise.
Our pitch was huge, we had no neighbours on one side for the whole holiday, on the other for just 5 of the 10 nights, opposite there was a family for the first 3 nights then no one - great. If however you chose to be by the lake, you would have had neighbours for the duration.
I would recommend this site and may go back next year. However I am also looking into other sites - definitely worth going to France!

This is a Great Touring Site with a friendly atmosphere.
Ideal for short stays and exploring the salt pans of southern Brittany.
Pitches are a bit uneven but toilets and showers are great with hookups available.
Pool is Small but kids playgrounds are good.
Fishing could be better managed very Shallow lake with lots of small Catfish.
Small bar and restaurant on site.
Shop is very limited.
Must do's in the area a visit to the walled city of Guerande.
The Beaches at Le Baule are Great but Parking is a nightmare.

We stayed at this site in August 2006, and really I couldn't add much more to the previous reviewer's comments.
It is away from the beaches, so hence the larger pitches and smaller price tag per pitch.
Some of the pitches are sloping, so watch out for those. Ours was one terrace above the lake, and fairly flat, with trees for shade. We also had a EHU, and meant that we were amongst some of the caravans & motorhomes, not that that mattered.
Quite a peaceful site, and the owner will come & tell you to quiet down if he thinks you have been too noisy after midnight(as we found out one evening after celebrating a birthday!)
Toilets, showers & washing facilities are clean & adequate. The pool is clean, open most of the day, up to around 9pm. No lifeguards though, so you must supervise your own children.
Lots of Dutch also stay at this site, along with other nationalities. Only a few French when we were there.
It is not close to a town that you could easily walk to, and you would need to drive or cycle.

We have just returned from a weeks camping at this site during the third week of August. Now, the weather wasn't the best but it mattered not, this was an excellent site! It's probably not up to Key or Euro Camp style but for us, it's more rustic appeal and low key approach was lovely. On arrival we were taken by foot to our pitch - we were camping on a basic, no EHU plot which was very sizable and a fantastic location - right on the bank of the lake surrounded by oak trees. There was a mix of tents, camper vans and this site also has chalets and static mobile homes although they are all situated a fair distance from the facilities. We arrived quite late and hungry so ordered two pizzas and beer to collect in an hours time from the bar and set about making camp. They weren't the best pizzas in the world but the moment - with the tent up and car unpacked, certainly was! The bar was very nice with a pool table & darts, next to which a small restaurant with a fairly typical menu for that area. Not the best food (we would recommend a fab pizza place in PontChateau - up the hill from the station on the right hand side) but handy if you've no alternative. Shop sold pretty much all the basics and did a freezer block service. Campsite Staff all spoke English and were very friendly on all occasions. The washing up/shower facilities seemed fairly new and were very clean. The showers were one-heat push button (and it was quite hot water!) so I could imagine that would cause issue with children or sunburn. Tennis court wasn't the best kept - slightly mossy and as we'd had rain, too slippery to play on. We didn't use the pool but it looked very clean. The lake was lovely - my husband fished (little catfish & small roach) and there was free pedal boats which were fun. Be sure to have a wander to find the actual Chateau - it's very beautiful but alas not open to campers. I would recommend this site for the good facilities and peacefulness.
