We had high expectations of this site given that it's the first 5* campsite in France. Don't get me wrong, it's a good site - it's just not as good as some others we've been at. The fifth star clearly indicates the range of facilities, rather than indicating this is a 'better' site than any others. (But we left puzzled as it doesn't offer any more facilities than other 4* sites we've stayed at).
There's a relaxed feel to the site, very safe and the steep cost prices out the slightly more 'mixed' crowd you see at most other sites.
The pool area is excellent (with slides) and we were always able to find loungers even though it was high season. The restaurant menu looked pretty good although we didn't try it.
Pitches are flat, shaded and good-sized - no complaints.
Sommieres looks a very nice town although since we only stayed a short time we didn't have time to explore - a regret.
So all in all, a high quality site with good facilities but don't by misled by thinking its 5* status sets it in a different class from some of the best sites elsewhere. But at £60/night it's a high price to pay for a campsite pitch !

We are doing a 6 week tour of France and have stayed at some great sites, some also members of the Castels 4* group. Massereau has recently been given 5 stars by Castels, the first in the group to get this accolade. We were told by a site person that the day the site was inspected, there was no toilet paper in the block and no hand wash - hardly an independent assessment.
Though the site is large, the chalets and tourers are all crammed into one area, with lots of space around the site left unused. The roads on the site are very narrow and there are so many trees to negotiate to get onto a pitch. All of the plots seem to be on top of each other. There is no sense of space on the site, despite the huge amount of space available.
The pool and restaurant facilities are very good, and they should be these prices, but the plots are rubbish in our view.
We stayed at Camping Natura (Castels) in the Pyrenees before Massereau and Boisson (also Castels) afterwards - both are far superior in just about every way.
The small medieval town of Sommiere is an easy walk and has a middle east Medina feel about it. We liked it a lot.
If your looking for a nice site in the area, go to Castels Boisson site - beats Massereau hands down in our opinion.
May be 5* facilities, but the touring pitches are rubbish. Everyone we spoke to on the site felt the same.

This was our second visit to this site and this is an update to my review provided in 2009.
Since our visit in 2009 the owners have made a couple of improvements to the site. They have had the road raised outside the camp site to remove the steep and awkward threshold into the site that was known to ground and sometimes damage long trailers.
Also the management of the site staff seems to have improved with the introduction of a very hard working manager (called Matthew) and some additional staff. However some staff are inexperienced and this does sometimes cause delays around the bar area.
It is a lovely relaxing site and informal site. I really like the pool area and it's grass covered perimeter. There are plenty of very comfortable sun loungers informally arranged with choice of sun or shady spots.
We are already thinking of returning to this site in 2011!

After reading the excellent reviews about this site, Les Castels’ boast of 4 stars and “hotellery in the open air” and having been looking forward to our visit for so long, I did want to also rate this site as excellent but in my opinion it fell just short of such an accolade.
We arrived to a very friendly welcome at reception and the business was conducted in excellent English which after a long drive was fine with me. The site advises that there is a steep approach to the site but to be honest, if you’ve got to the site via the A75 through the Massif Centrale, the slope there is nothing to worry about at all. Entry to the site is through security barriers which is always a pleasing and reassuring sight.
We pitched our camper, awning and large canopy and still had a huge amount of room on the pitch for the kids to play on. There was also a tap and a waste water disposal pipe on the pitch. As noted by the previous reviewer, most pitches have trees but these didn't present a problem though I think in some cases you may need to use your imagination when pitching.
After pitching and the long drive, we didn’t feel like cooking so we headed off to the campsite restaurant. It was very full and they do like you to reserve a table but when I explained to the head waiter that we had just arrived and we had two little ones with us (again, all in excellent English), he was extremely helpful and found us a table. The food at the restaurant is excellent and we used it several times during our stay. It isn’t cheap, but it’s not extortionate either. If you know you will be arriving on a particular day though and you think you will want to eat there, contact the site and reserve yourself a table! It is here that perhaps I can offer my first of several criticisms. The site has a sister vineyard so they sell their wines in the restaurant and at the site shop. The flagship red wine is “La Tourie” which sells for 11 euros in the shop, yet, in the restaurant which is no more than 20 yards from the shop, you’ll pay 21 euros for the same bottle. I know restaurants “mark-up” their wine, but this seemed to be a step too far for me.
It is the shop that is the focus for my second criticism. The staff are all excellent in everything they do, take nothing away from them, however, the way they are organised does leave something to be desired. The shop itself is quite well stocked with the usual essentials though if you want bread and croissants they need to be ordered the day before. There are also British newspapers on sale on their day of publication but can be as much as 5 euros. But here’s the problem! The shop is never manned so you can wait for quite a while to get served. Someone has to leave their post at the adjacent bar and often this wouldn’t happen for between 10 and 15 minutes. Over a period of days that time adds up. On our last day when we had our packing schedule arranged in military precision I queued for half and hour for bread at the bar and then a few bits and pieces in the shop. I wasn’t happy and it did nothing for my stress levels.
The facilities around the site are very good. There is only one toilet and shower block and this can get very busy though I never waited for either. They were also usually very clean. I did notice though that some fittings were broken and annoyingly, there was sometimes no toilet paper in the cubicles. I started to take my own early on in the holiday. Be careful that they don’t allocate you a pitch right next to this block, because there are a few and I can’t imagine what it would have been like next to this with lots of noise and doors banging almost constantly day and night.
The swimming pools are excellent. The main pool has some slides and a child’s paddling area but it was cold. Why not though, the heat made it welcome on occasions. The other pool was heated and after the cold pool, it was like getting into a bath. You must wear swimming trunks in both pools and normal beach type shorts are not allowed.
The best beaches are about 30 minutes away at Le Grande Motte. For us, with small children we found one that had a little sea lagoon with hardly any waves and some rock pools. On approaching the town, head for the Centre Ville and park by the casino. The beach is next door. We also visited the Pont du Gard and if you do this, take your swimmers with you because the “beach” on the river bank is excellent.
Sommieres as a town is lovely. There are lots of nice shops and squares with bars and restaurants and there are markets on Saturdays and Wednesday.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the site and it is one of the best we have ever stayed at. We would certainly go again but there are some little details that have been highlighted above that had me thinking that the “hotel in the open air” claim along with the £48 a night price tag wasn’t quite (though almost) justified.

We arrived at the site on the day it opened this year, so everything was fresh and working (except the wifi). We drive an American Motor home with a trailer with electric wheelchair. The motor home is 24' long and with the trailer we are about 32' long. 9'11' on the mirrors and fairly tall at 13'.
Access to the site via the town was not easy, the first problem we found was we grounded on the slope in to the site, this was badly scored from other groundings. The entrance was attractive and had barriers (good thing from our point of view). We had the pick of the camping sites and selected 618 which is very near the toilet block. There was more noise from the continued drying of bedding for the camping huts than real noise from the slamming of the doors of the toilet block.
The toilet block was very clean and was always tidy when we were there in March / April this year. The pitches are large but lots of trees and care has to be exercised in getting on to the pitches. As we have a fairly big motor home we just took our time. We saw European campers of a similar size manage OK. The on pitch water and black tank disposal was welcome bonus.
We found the food shop to be OK, but like another review we found you could end up waiting to be served as the bar cover the shop.
Price wise it was not to bad. The food in the restaurant was good and fair considering all factors - fairly expensive but we did eat there twice. The wine cost at the table was expensive when the same bottle in the shop a few yards away was half the price. Beer at the bar was cheaper than a coffee.
Staff were first class and helpful. We took our St Bernard dog with us and she and us were maid very welcome by all.
The town is the gem and worth going into and we spent many a happy hour there. About 2 km by the bike track which is on the old railway bed. Good for wheelchairs and a bike if you have one with you. Lots to see in the town and market day is Saturdays.
We managed to order bread on each day and that was at the same price as the town shops. Lidl is near the town as is Intermarche. The town shops were expensive but some of the best meat I have seen. Coffee in the town was not to expensive.
Good Tourist information shop in the town.
We liked it so much we have re booked and paid a deposit for 2010 and our daughter, son in law and children (in a tent) are coming with us for another 11 night stay. This year they got a 5 star rating. However they have stopped taking the ACIS card which made a good saving. Hope they reconsider it for 2012 as they say they may. Not the cheapest site, but I think overall it is good value in a nice location and nice friendly staff.
Recommend. 8 out 10

Camping De Massereau is a fairly new site which has been built in a wooded part of the family vineyard. The site has an informal layout with mostly large pitches, well delimited by bushes and trees. The trees offer welcome shade but some pitches have trees in awkward places. We didn't see any problems with units not fitting into the pitches, but did notice units parked at odd angles in between trees.
The wash block is in the middle of the site and is kept very clean. The showers and sinks have temperature controls and the only let down is the spray taps on the washing up sinks. The whole site is well looked after by the owners.
As previously mentioned there are some mobile homes and wooden chalets on the site but the balance of statics to mobiles is OK.
The pools are very good and although not a lifeguard present there is an attendant on duty. As well as the previous reviews list of facilities there is a fitness trail and tour of the vine yard with wine tasting. The site could do with a multi-sport pitch to make it ideal.
The site has a cycle path (converted railway line) that runs right next to it. Head west to Sommieres which is about 3km and east to Nimes about 15+km, and in the surrounding area loads of old villages.
Sommieres is fantastic if you like Roman/medieval towns with lots of small shops and alley ways. Look out for the alley way, at the bridge entrance to the town, which takes you through to the market square.
Sommieres is well positioned for visiting the Med beaches (30 mins), Nimes (30mins) and Montpellier (45 mins). Also don't miss the remains of the Roman settlement Ambrussum (5 mins). Here you can still walk on the Via Domitia (Roman road) and see visible traces of Roman chariot tracks.
We are already planning to rebook the campsite for next year, the whole family enjoyed our stay.

We visited with our touring caravan and there were 6 in our party - grandparents, 2 adults and 2 children.
The first thing to say is that I am under pressure from my parents and children to rebook next year and the only thing holding me back is . What if it's not as good 2nd time round!
Pitches are varying size and shadiness and due to area are dusty; also most have trees growing in the middle so positioning tent and van with awning can be tricky! We had a couple of ants nests on our pitch.
There are some mobile homes and wooden chalets owned by the site and also some wooden chalets right at the bottom of the site owned by Eurocamp.
The pools are great - a paddling pool, heated rectangular pool, and pool with 2 straight and one curly slide - the highlight of the holiday for my kids. There's also tennis courts, boules area, trampolines all just between the pool and the bar/restaurant so kids can go play between courses or while you have a drink.
Good bar, shop (ice creams, fresh bread order night before) and restaurant on site with some themed nights.
Sanitary blocks clean plenty of hot water.
The site is just out of the charming town of Sommieres - it is just lovely! Fabulous market, bull games 2-3 times a week in the shady arenas, bull running the day of the bull fights through the streets of the town (exciting!), river running though town. We left just before the feria, that would be even more fun!
Other favourite sites to see - Pont du Gard, les Aigues Mortes, Uzes .

An amazing find! Part of Les Castells group. Within walking/ cycling distance of the beautiful town of Sommieres. Fantastic swimming pool complex (water flumes etc) for younger members and a medium size heated pool for us older ones! Always heated to 28 degrees! Free trampolines and games / park area. Campsite in the middle of vineyard country and local wine available to buy as well as free tours and tasting. The campsite is only approx 3 years old and has a lovely clean sanitary block. Owners very wecoming and english spoken. Small shop / restaurant / take away on site. Fresh baguettes daily etc. Some pitches shaded. Pitches of very generous proportions. Entry to site may be difficult for larger units due to entrance of campsite. Don't be deterred- this really is superb for short or long stay holidays! I will be going back!
