Like other reviewers I almost don't want to tell you about this site, it's so good that I'm not sure I want to share it, but here goes. We arrived having phoned a couple of hours earlier to book, said we'd only stay one night and then stayed 5, thereby changing ALL our plans. It's got everything although we didn't use it all. The shower blocks were exemplary and a pleasure to use - I don't think I've ever been so clean. The huge pitches, the cool walk or bike ride down by the river in the dappled sunlight, the refreshing pool. Even a village shop within cycling distance, so no need to take a taxi or pack up the MH to buy the few essentials that the site shop didn't sell.
It's a lovely site in a wonderful area and all the staff are charming and helpful but I think the key to its success is that Jacques the owner is very involved, taking a trip around the site every evening, waving to all from his golf buggy, slowing down to speak to those that want his attention. Well done Jacques, we'll be back.

What can I say, this site is beautiful. Everything about it was brilliant. All that was said in the previous review is true and some!
Everyone is very helpful.
The site is well drained as we were there during 24 hours of torrential rain. We were using an eco groundsheet and it remained dry throughout. The surrounding grass was wet but not soggy.
We were there for 6 nights and would have stayed longer if we had been able to.

There's not a lot to say to add to what others have already said. This is a fantastic campsite. Huge pitches, good clean unisex toilet and shower facilities, nice but small pool, the friendliest people running it.
There's a small beach area next to the river for sandcastle building and swimming with the loads of fish in the river. You can borrow canoes and there's loads of tennis racquets, mini golf clubs, footballs etc that you can borrow from reception. There's a children's playground with climbing frame, see saw etc. Also a couple of trampolines.
There's a big lake about 20 minutes down the road Le Grand Etang de St Estephe if you need bigger swimming pool which has a swimming area and canoes to borrow and a diving platform with lifeguards and a lovely sandy beach with sunloungers.
A smallish Intermarche a few minutes drive away in Montbron.
The site has a nice mix of nationalities and also a nice mix of tent, campervan and caravan pitches alongside some chalets, ready erected tents and static caravans. We had a fantastic holiday and would love to go back.

Les Gorges du Chambon is a 4-star Castel campsite situated on the border of the Charante and Dordogne regions. It is relatively easy to find being approximately 5kms south-east of Montbron along the D6 road. Keep on the D6 until you get to the water tower at La Tricherie, turn left and follow this road until you arrive. It’s quite a long road but is suitable for caravans.
On arrival the reception is on the right of the courtyard. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner, Mr Petit, and we received the friendliest welcome we have ever received at any campsite anywhere. He obviously loves his campsite, loves the area he lives in and is enthusiastic about both.
He told us all about the facilities, showed us the ‘English’ area of his shop, gave us local leaflets, gave us information on walks and told us a bit about the area. He also showed us where he lived in case we had an emergency when the shop was closed.
He allocated us what he thought was a good pitch but made it quite clear that if we didn’t like it we could pitch wherever we preferred. The pitch, however, was brilliant. It was one of only a few that had a water point, drainage, and electricity on the pitch at no extra cost, and it also had good views over the surrounding countryside.
The campsite has a strange layout. Viewed from above (have a look at Google Earth), the roads and paths look like two very large wagon wheels with the toilet blocks as the hubs and roads and paths as the spokes.
These two ‘wagon wheels’ are connected by other curved roads and there is also another road which goes around the outside of one of the wheels. I found this a bit disorientating when we were first there. It felt a bit like I was in a scene from the cult 60’s programme The Prisoner. I would set off from my pitch to go to reception, say, spend ages walking along the roads to eventually end up at the opposite end of the site or even back at the pitch without actually getting to my destination. I exaggerate a bit but it did take a bit of getting used to. You can, of course, just cut across the grass (if only No. 6 had thought of that).
The pitches are huge but many slope a bit. You should have plenty of room for any equipment that you care to bring. A lot of the pitches are within the area of the two ‘wagon wheels’, the others are spread around the site and these tend to have the better views.
Most of the pitches are separated by lines marked out on the grass although there are a small number that have hedges. Most of the pitches have electricity only with a tap close by. There are five special ‘Castels’ pitches which not only have electricity, water and drainage but also contain a wooden patio area which is covered by a large gazebo.
They also have a quality wooden garden table and chairs, plastic recliners, a parasol, a solid built charcoal barbecue, and a domestic style fridge. The 'Castels' pitches cost extra and may appear expensive but you are getting quality items. I think they are meant for caravans but would be equally ideal if you are camping and do not wish to bring a lot of stuff with you.
The campsite has two toilet blocks. They each have similar equipment (toilets, showers, enclosed basins, washing machines, areas for dish and clothes washing), but they couldn’t be more different. The block on the far side of the site has a character all of its own. It’s built on two levels and has toilets, showers, and basins scattered randomly around it. Every wall is painted a different vibrant colour – deep pink, yellow, bright green, bright blue and orange. The doors are orange. It shouldn’t really work, but it does. It could have been painted by Mondrian. It’s mad, bonkers, ridiculous but absolutely wonderful. I hope they never change it.
The other (larger) block is more conventional. The toilets, showers and basins are in lines and the walls are plain; it just doesn’t have the charm of the other block. What it does have, however, is a ‘warm’ room which contains showers and basins and is heated during the cooler periods.
Both of the blocks are unisex and both are kept spotlessly clean. There are clothes airers stored at each block that campers can borrow to save having to pay for the driers. There are also freezers at each block for campers to use.
Just outside the large block is a feature I have never ever seen on a campsite before. They have planted out 12 plots with various herbs and tomatoes with a sign encouraging campers to pick whatever they need. It’s an excellent idea. Another ‘feature’ that I have never seen before is that a large area of the site is laid out as a bird sanctuary.
Other features of the site include a small swimming pool, mini golf, tennis courts, table tennis, boules pitch, and a very large children’s play area which has plenty of seating for the parents. They have also just installed a small enclosure containing a couple of rabbits and 3 chickens.
The restaurant on-site serves up good food including pizzas but doesn’t have a very large menu. It also does a takeaway service although this doesn’t work too well in low season when you can’t be sure whether the restaurant will open or not. Opposite the restaurant there is a room for teenagers to meet which has a table tennis table in it.
The site borders the Tardoire river and has a small beach which allows easy access to the water. Just up the road from the campsite is the Chambon outdoor centre which has canoes, fishing lakes and a wide range of outdoor activities. There is also a horse riding stables nearby.
The closest town to the campsite of any size (‘small’ is a size) is Montbron which is about 5kms away. You will find a reasonably large Intermarche supermarket here. The town also has a variety of shops and an old chateau. A larger supermarket can be found in La Rochefoucauld which is about 15 minutes further on but you should be able to get most things in Montbron.
The Charante region of France is pretty rather than being picturesque. It doesn’t seem to have the dramatic scenery that its neighbour, the Dordogne, has. It is still a very nice area to visit though and will be a lot quieter than the Dordogne. This is a great area for walking and there are several well sign posted walks which pass the campsite. We did some of these but also purchased the book ‘La Charante a pied’ which gives details of over 40 walks in the Charante region. It’s written in French but the walks are easy to follow.
There is plenty to do in the area. We visited Angouleme where some of the buildings have huge murals painted on them. We went to the chateau at La Rochefoucauld which was a good day out. You don’t get to see as much of the chateau as I expected but they do have a room with old fashioned costumes where the whole family can dress up – great fun.
We also went to the cave at Villars which was interesting. Other towns we visited were Brantome (very picturesque) and Cognac (not as picturesque as expected). On Wednesday mornings there is a huge market at Piegut (around 15kms from the site) and well worth the visit. We also visited the lake at St Elspeth and the Lacs de Haute Charante at Massignac where there will be plenty to do in high season.
I would sum up Les Gorges du Chambon in one word. Wonderful.

Have to agree with previous reviews, this site is a gem
No charge for bicycle use, canoes, sports equipment and pony rides round the campsite. Sites vary in size from the normal to massive but campsite did not seem to check outfit size for allocation. Some small tents were in pitches like fields whilst large caravans put in smaller although adequate pitches. Area around site good for walking and mountain biking, routes well marked. On site restaurant very good although pricey. Toilet block probably best ive seen in 20 years travelling in France. Staff on site were very cheery and helpful.

The best camp site we stayed on in France, all the facilities are excellant with 2 large toilet blocks with all facilities. There is a shop for basics, an adjacent restaurant which also does take outs, swimming pool and tennis court. The owner, Jacques could not be more helpful and always has information on whats going on in the surrounding area. The site is well kept, has plenty of room for each pitch and because it is away from traffic in the countryside very quiet and peaceful. There are lots of walks in the area and other activities, canoeing, riding and mountain biking are available. The nearest town is about 4 miles away with a good selection of small shops. Under 20 miles to very large new Supermarket.

Warm welcome. Very helpful, friendly staff. Extra large pitches. Free freezer in each wash block. Very clean and plenty of showers and toilets. HOT showers which don't stop until you turn them off! Smallish but heated pool. Playground looked good.
Brantome, lovely town, about 40 minutes drive, Excellent Friday market. Nontron market fun (Saturday). Montbron worth a wander round. Walks in area lovely, though walk maps could be bigger scale!
Angouleme about 50 minutes drive away. Weekly camp site events sheet handed out to arrivals.
Castels and Camping site at its best! Very relaxing.
