We originally stuck a pin in a map and this site was the closest. We decided to phone and get more information before taking the plunge. Annette, the site owner was so helpful on the phone we decided to book 2 nights camping in our tent with ehu for a total of £30. This impressed us no end although at first did make us slightly apprehensive!

We need not have worried as this campsite is a little hidden gem. On arrival we were greeted by Annette who gave us a choice of pitches with various pros and cons. We picked our pitch based on the getting the sun all day.

There are some midgies although smoke from our bbq kept them at bay. The toilet facilities are of a very good standard, clean and plenty of room. Plenty of free hot water for showering. Dishwashing facilities again plenty of free hot water. Waste disposal - although very adequate, until you go there yourself I wouldn't like to spoil the surprise!

On Friday evening we decided to pop into the clubhouse for a quick beer and we received a really warm welcome. I took a double take when I realised how cheap the drinks were - at least £2 cheaper than the same round back home.

The new owners Annette and George have got big improvement plans for this site but even at the moment this site has better facilities than other sites which charge much more per night.

On a final note it was nice when leaving the site to come home that Annette took the time to come and ask us how our visit had been and if we had any suggestions on how our stay could have been improved. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend - we will go back again without any hesitation.

This was our second attempt at camping. We were met at reception by one of the owners and directed to our pitch.

The site is clean and tidy, as are the toilet, shower and washing up facilities, although the toilet doors bang very loudly as they are fitted with door closures.

There are no play areas for kids, apart from a rope swing in the woods at top of site, although there are many grassed areas wher they could play football etc.

There is a club on site with Pool Table. Drink prices are very reasonable and both owners and staff are very friendly. They currently offer snacks, soup, paninis etc but plan to do food in the future. Not a busy site.

Current owners have only been there since March, but are obviously making efforts to attract campers/tourers. Only a short walk away in the village there is garage, two pubs, co-op, bakery, fish and chip shop and chinese takeaway so no shortage of food if you don't feel like cooking.

Grass pitches available from £10 per night which is probably the cheapest I have found on the web.

The site is quiet but definitely deserves more visitors. We will definitely be camping at Muirkirk again.

Visited in April and was immediately pleased with the facilities, pitch was great, toilet block and facilities lovely and clean.

Staff were really friendly and helpful. Club on site which was a real bonus. The village is only round the corner and everybody is really friendly ready to have a chat.

The are lots of interesting walks and we just wandered off to explore. It's handy for sightseeing as well with Bill Shankly's birthplace nearby if your interested in Liverpool Football.

There is lots of history with the first McAdam road and references Robbie Burns being friendly with the local poets.

Of course its a great location for driving around with main routes to Ayr and the west of Scotland never too far away.

Would recommend a visit if you want to get away from it all to a friendly site with lots of walks and stunning scenery.

Our second time camping, we thought we would try this as there was no reviews or information on this site. On arrival it wasn't much to look at, but still we needed practice for Mojave 5. Was shown our pitch £12 with electric. So we started to unload, the wind was picking up fast and furious, after a few attempts we decided to leave. One of the workers was helping us put away our tent when horror struck, the tent blew on to a barbed wire fence and ripped. Any way the owners have only been there 6 weeks and kindly put us up in a static with no gas/electric for an extra £10, that suited us. The owner was very friendly as were the staff, later there was a karaoke that we enjoyed. No play area for children, toilets are cleaned regularly. This camp site is mainly used by greyhound racers. Local co-op is 5 mins walk. Would not come back, due to no play park for our kids. But very nice welcome and friendly staff.
