Interesting site, right on the sea, set in dunes. Access is on typically terrible Irish roads so you need good suspension. When you arrive, access is not great especially if has been raining a lot, as it had when we arrived since the access road is not well kept.
The facilities once there are very basic, but the prices charged are top whack so value for money is not great. The toilets are completely inadequate: two unisex toilets and only one shower. Also, these are located in a huge empty barn/garage building and its cold and breezy, so even the 'power shower' is unable to make you feel warm.
In good weather it may be OK, but we were there in very bad weather and it was no fun at all. You will also be charged chemical toilet waste disposal after the first one. So, the good points: great location, right on the Atlantic.
Bad points: overblown facilities, overly expensive, a good way from shops, pubs etc and nothing available on site (no shop), not even dishwashing facilities and completely inadequate facilities.
Oh, and some pitches are flat, but not many, some are sheltered but some see the full wrath of the Atlantic in bad weather!

As others have written this is a special place - one of the two best sites we have used in 40 years of camping. It's a pleasure to wake up each morning - wind, rain or sunshine - and look out across the bay and headland to the Atlantic.
Highlights:dolphins and a seal in the bay;the estuary and beaches; the space between pitches among the dunes - but with hook-up: busy Clifden for shops and coffee 20 minutes' drive away; the cleanliness of the two modern toilets and shower; Chis, the owner and manager, friendly and organised, putting himself out to find the best pitch for each tent and camper. And the sunsets!
We want to return.

I enjoyed staying at this site, I found it refreshing to go back to basics and it certainly felt like wild-camping. I did however begrudge the cost of the site for such basic facilities.
As others have stated, there is still only 2 unisex toilets (2012) (not spotless but clean enough. ) and one shower. There were queues in the mornings, and the shower was not hot.
So yes, I might return again, but I really do think its overpriced for what is offered. I go to other Atlantic shore campsites and for top notch facilities they charge the same as Actons with little or no facilities.
Washing dishes was a real pain - no kitchen area to wash - just a place behind the barn where you could hose your dishes down (open air).
Nice site, but too expensive.

We camped here as a family (2 adults, 3 children) in May 2012. I've mixed feelings about this campsite! On the plus side, the location is stunning - right on the coast, access to its own gorgeous beach, feels very safe for the kids, beautiful scenery, fab natural layout of pitches.
BUT only 1 shower (with erratic temperature controls), 2 toilets and 2 washbasins in total (all unisex), housed in a partitioned corner of a huge breeze-block, galvanised roof barn, with no heat! When I had spoken to the owner a couple of months before we went there, he told me that there were 2 showers, however, when we got there, just one. In talking to others who have been going there for a few years, the owner has been telling them he's adding an extra shower for as long as they have been going, but it hasn't happened. No hot water in the washbasins the weekend we were there and no washing up facilities or campers kitchen - just 2 cold water taps around the site. Also, owner wouldn't allow EHU for us in tent?!
There are no specific kids facilities, but none are needed because the beach provided all the facilities they wanted. It was very cold the weekend we were there, but the kids didn't care and disappeared after each meal and only returned for the next one! We hadn't driven out of the site on the day we were leaving before they were asking if we could go back 'next year'. It would take so little to make this site 'perfect' whilst still keeping the basic feel that the owner wants to maintain. It's such a shame that the owner doesn't use a little more of the huge barn at his disposal to add a couple of more toilets and showers and a washing up area.

Perfect despite the weather just what we needed for a get away from it all holiday When the wind blows it certainly blows but the views, the welcome, the lack of mud and the spotlessly clean facilities made it perfect.
If perfection can be improved on then doubling the number of toilets and showers and adding a camp kitchen will do this As others have said had the site been full then I think that the facilities would have struggled.
There is a good range of shops in Clifden and one more locally.
Little to say that hasn't already lovely and now the weather has got better I want to go back!

We chose this site on the basis of the previous reviews as it sounded just our kind of place. And we were certainly not disappointed! It was just as previously described and more. It is hard to put into words the ambience of this special place - it just has to be experienced. Such peace, tranquility and natural beauty is hard to find these days. It is somewhere to totally chill, though there is plenty to do to be active as well.
We were booked in for just three nights, sadly, and we loved every minute. We had one day of glorius warm sunshine and the other was very wild and windy. However, each was beautiful in its own way.
If you have children here they can enjoy their freedom in safety, and what a place to explore! Our children are now grown but our two spaniels thought they had died and gone to heaven as they too, made full use of this wonderful environment.
There is also the added benefit of clean facilities with good hot showers. At present these are limited and uni-sex. There were only very few people there at this time, so not a problem, though might be at busy times. However, Kris has plans to extend these facilities in the future.
Access is good too. Though quite remote the road to the site is reasonable. As the pitches are among the sand dunes, there is no problem either about getting bogged down in mud.

This is a great campsite wonderful views, private beaches with good fishing from site. We arrived late in the night & awoke in the morning to fantastic sea scape views. The site is located on a Machair habitat site, the nature here is great. We were lucky to see a family of otters playing on the beach one morning. Our pitch was private, clean & free of mud which was rare for us to find in Ireland due to the beach location. All facilities were well looked after toilets & showers always clean. Drinking water of high quality, another rarity in Ireland.
The peace & quiet was excellent, met UK vistors who have been coming here for years, they just love it as did we. The friendly owners & amazing location made it a perfect vacation for us, it was just a pity that we could not have stayed longer.

We had a great stop here this August- the site itself is in a beautiful spot, plenty of space for each pitch in a wonderful location and a very friendly atmosphere. It's right next to a string of small beaches. It's family friendly and dogs seemed to be enjoying themselves too.
We were only there 2 nights but felt real welcomed and Chris (Kris?) who runs the place was very helpful and full of good local information. We took an amazing walk up the coast and then walked across to Omey island at low tide.
It's not far from shops and stuff at Clifden but you certainly feel like you're away from it all.
Definitely a special place, and if we get to come back to Ireland in the campervan - we'll be there again :)

As each of the other reviewers have said, a truly wonderful place. All the pitches come with a sea view and don't think just because it has ten pitches it is a small site, Kris the owner doesn't believe in having it crowded.
Amazing private beaches with great rock pools, good fishing off the rocks. Electric hook ups and fresh spring water. Facilities always spotlessly clean.
Located about 8 miles from Clifden, nearest town with Lidl, Aldi etc and loads of restaurants and pubs. Small shop, pub, petrol station about 1.5 miles away.
If the sun shines you won't want to leave this place, our kids cried when we left. In six years of touring the best site we have ever stayed at.

This is a really special site. Right on the isolated wild west coast of Galway. We camped with our 4 boys and they absolutely loved it. We dined on local oysters, our own freshly caught mackerel and gallons of Guinness.
The site is on machair grass which grows on sand dunes. This makes it drain incredibly quickly which is important because it can occasionally rain in Ireland.
Everything it says on the website is true. The owner, Kris, is a delightful man who's only too happy to show you where to catch fish, where to pitch, which beaches to visit etc.
We even adopted the site dog, Flan, for a few nights. As close as you can get to wild camping and still have a hot shower! Highly recommended.
