Stayed for three nights in late August - we wanted somewhere to break the journey home but where there was something to see or do - this site and location was perfect.
Although there were a few 'long term guests', the majority were overnighters. We chose our pitch, grassy, hedges, view of river. No problem with noise, pleasant to watch the different water activities (water-skiers, cruise-ships, jetskis). Yes, the opposite bank was industrial but that was a distance away so not an eyesore, even the sunset over the dockyards was picturesque!
The sanitary block does deserve a special mention - seems odd to wax lyrical but makes such a difference compared with elsewhere. Indoors and clean, with excellent features inc a family shower room ie. Two showers and large changing area.
Unfortunately we had a disappointing meal at the campsite restaurant - 'vegetarian platter' was a pile of brown mush - overcooked frozen veg. But other guests seemed to be enjoying their bowls of mussels. Lovely coffee available from the bar in the morning.
Chalon is a great town - mixture of historic and good shopping. The cathedral is worth a look, and food market on Sunday morning. Lots of choice of restaurants. There's a park with an aviary and playground that our 7 year old enjoyed.
The highlight for us was the municipal aquapark. For serious swimmers there's an Olympic size pool. For families there is a wave pool, double slide, indoor lazy-river type pool, fountain paddling pool, set in large grassed area so great for playing and relaxing for several hours; lots of life guards, both for safety and to stop nuisance. Cheap for adults and children free, but be warned that Sunday is heaving (we went Sat and Sun). Also note Speedos for men, and you have to wear swimming gear even if you just intend being a spectator.
We did walk from the campsite to the town but it's a fair walk, so we also used the free carpark at the leisure park (as well as the pool there is bowling) as a base for going in to town.

We stayed on this site for one night on our way to the south of France, and one night two weeks later on our return.
The site seems to be in three parts. There are some smaller pitches near the entrance to the site, which are perfect for just a short stay. They are long and narrow pitches, delineated by hedges. If we had put up our awning we would have had no other space at the side of the caravan. At the far side of the toilet block there are larger pitches on grass, again with hedges, which would be perfect for a longer stay. Then there is a more open grassed area, which we assumed was primarily for tents.
The santitation block is really clean and well designed and absolutely spotless.
There is a restaurant which serves good food and overlooks the river.
On our return, on 1 September, less than two weeks later, it felt very different. The site was still very full, but the bar and restaurant, and reception, closed at 8 pm. Considering how busy the site was, this seemed a little early.
The Caravan Club directions to this site were invaluable. Don't follow your satnav if you are towing a caravan!
This is an excellent stopover site, and if you fancy a longer stay, take one of the pitches in the grassed area.

We used this site for a short break on way back from Southern France. Upon arrival, the reception was closed until 2pm.
We queued with other campers and then had a speedy and efficient check-in once opened, with no other charges to pay along with camping cheques.
We were able to choose our pitch as it was classed as low season.
The site is situated alongside the river overlooking the large bridge to town.
Lovely, large pitches, hedged and many with river views. Excellent toilet/shower facilities. Free wifi. Bar, restaurant and takeaway good.
Ten minutes to walk into town and fifteen minutes to walk along the river to the large retail park with hypermarket.
Excellent site in excellent location. Hope to visit again soon.

One of the best sites that we have used in France, lovely location and superb facilities. It is a long narrow campsite, overlooking the river Saóne. The pitches have hedges either side and there are trees if you like shade. The man running the site was helpful and we chose our own pitch. The showers/ toilets are new and are kept very clean and there was plenty of hot water. The town centre is about a 10 minute cycle away and is well worth a visit, very old buildings and churches, lots of shops in narrow streets, lots of atmosphere, busy but not overcrowded. There is also a large retail park, again about a 10 minute bike ride away with a massive Carrefour and many other large shops. The site is very near the town but looks and feels to be in the countryside. We had only booked two nights there on this trip, but will be going back for longer next time.

We used this site as a stop over between Calais and the South of France. We booked the pitch using the internet having seen the previous reviews and the details on their web site. We were very pleased with our stay at the camp site and would recommend it for for an overnight or longer visit. It is easy to find from the A6 and is also close to a supermarket for food and fuel before rejoining the A6.
Our pitch was allocated to us and overlooked the river. They are flat pitches with hedges either side. The back of the pitch is open on to the pitch behind, this is not a problem as the pitches are deep. The toilets and showers, situated on a raised bank are brand new and kept very clean.
There is a well maintained fence all round the site and I felt that the site security was in good order. There was some noise when we arrived from the factories opposite the site and a couple of jet skis on the river. However the noise dropped off by night fall and the site was silent during the night.
It is an easy 10 minute walk into Chalon centre for restaurants and sites. Follow the path by the river downstream and cross a footbridge before you get to some flats. Walk on the perimeter path around the flats and rejoin the road in to town. One of the first streets you find is lined with restaurants, although we found that there are better value alternatives further in the town.

We used this site as a half way stop between Nice and the ferry ports. Found it on the Caravan Club website. A little bit tricky to find, easy if you follow the detailed instructions on the website – very difficult if, like me, you choose to ignore these and follow the sat nav! That takes you through the town centre! Lesson learnt.
You can choose your own pitch on a lovely flat picturesque site right beside the huge river Saone. Many pitches are long enough to leave the car attached, if that is your thing, for an extra quick getaway.
Fantastic new washrooms which has raised the site to three stars. Speaking to the site owners, these were imported from Holland and bolted together on site. Lovely touches like a children’s washroom with small toilets, low sinks, showers with the floor at parent waist height and even a baby bath. All of this was immaculately clean.
There is a cafe / bar on site and a basic play area (a slide!) just beside this so the little ones can let off steam whilst waiting for their food.
Overall, a good, clean, friendly site about 10 minutes drive from the main A6 autoroute. It is a lovely part of France, the town looked very pretty and it was a shame that we just spent one night here.

We stayed on this site for one night on our way down to the south of France. The approach to the site is along side the river and is quite industrial. However, on entering the site the reception was very good and we found our own pitch looking out onto the river.
The site itself was really very tranquil and whilst we stayed for only one night we could easily have stayed for longer and felt quite at home very quickly.
The toilet blocks are due to be rebuilt over this winter and that is needed as the biggest block in the centre of the site is very old with French style toilets and to be avoided at all cost.
They have a small restaurant on site where we had a meal in the evening and it was excellent both in terms of cost and quality.

The main reason we recommend this site is its beautiful setting - right by the Saone river. You just walk or cycle across the bridge into the little town where you'll find delicatessens and butchers which will have the money jumping out of your pocket.Try the crab mousse in aspic sold in little plastic pots.
As to the site itself - it is long and narrow so that, if you're down the end, you're a quite a walk from the first toilet block - and this one isn't to be recommended in its present state. It has French-style toilets and old-fashioned showers - you have to pull a string to get water - like in Mash! These are due to be upgraded during the 2009/10 winter season we are told. The farthest toilet block (near the office) is newly-built and fine except there aren't enough facilities for the size of the site as things are at present.
There are electric hook-ups and little hedges screening many of the plots. There is quite a busy road running beside the length of the site so there is some traffic noise. But we'd still recommend this site because of the lovely view from the vans, the friendliness of the staff and the free Wi-fi to plan your next move.
