I just spent 4 nights here with a group as a base for exploring Helvellyn and other peaks. We had a great time and really enjoyed the site.
The proprietor was surly on arrival but in fairness all our bookings were organised and we were given a separate small field to ourselves. The other campers were quiet despite large numbers of Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme students transiting through.
Overall we had an excellent stay. The only drawback is the men's toilet/shower block which is disgustingly filthy. It was not cleaned at all while we were there. A large rubbish bin inside the toilet area remained unemptied for our whole stay.
Traffic noise is a nuisance but bearable. The Kings Head next door is convenient - but nothing special. Its a chain Hotel. Access to the mountains is perfect.
If you try to do a circular walk via the permissive footpath through the forestry - it is closed!

The tariff is clearly displayed and I paid £8 for the night. (£6 for me plus £2 for my campervan)
This is a lovely site in a glorious setting.
It is perfectly situated for exploration of the Helvellyn range with Sticks Pass and the splendid path up Helvellyn Gill being easily accessible from the site.
Facilities are basic but clean and functional with plenty of hot water available.
There is a also a pub next door.
Negatives
- inevitable traffic noise from the adjacent A591. This tails off after 11pm and I didn't find it a problem.
- there is a sign in the toilet block warning that 'anybody failing to vacate a pitch by noon will be charged for an extra night'. I can understand the problem but felt the wording could have been friendlier and surely there is room for flexibility by prior arrangement at quiet times.
Overall an excellent and most convenient site which I wouldn't hesitate to use again.

Great campsite!
I would more than definitely go back to thirlmere.
Firstly we landed to the campsite and was greeted by one of the owners who was a very jolly chap and showed us where to pitch the tent, we were placed on the big field were the dogs could run for fun.
Once pitching are tent we then went round the lake just down the road from the campsite, the views were stunning.
We then took a trip to the town Keswick witch is give or take about 5 miles down the road from the campsite easy to get too. Keswick is small and dainty but has a co operative so that's enough to get you by for bits and bobs.
The next day we went up helvelleyn, well I say we, a few of us only got half way up and sent the rest to the top amazing views up there it's a must!
Toilets and shower are clean.
The pub next door is pricey but nice nice food no complaints.
Overall this campsite is situated in a great place lots to do only down the road from Windermere and Grassmere, facilities on site are just right for what you need. Owners very friendly and full of information, no playgrounds for children but as I say Keswick is only down the road.

My second stay here this year and will be looking to come back for another value and quiet stay.
There was plenty of room for tents across two fields, and although there were a couple of groups, there was no noise late on. The showers are hot and free, toilets clean and there is a covered washing up unit with hot water also.
One camper was having car trouble and the owner did try to help jump the car with his tractor.
The pub next door has some good beer and the food looked tasty too. There's outdoor seating for those sunny evenings.
It is right on the main road to Keswick, so if you are a light sleeper you might want to use ear plugs - although I've never had any problems with traffic noise.
For £6 a night for a basic, clean and quiet site, you can't go wrong. Next time I'll be using the path to through the farm for direct access to Helvellyn.

Got here about 5 pm on a Saturday night. 3 fields for use of tents albeit relatively small. Lovely location and flat pitches.
Easy access to Helvellyn and right next door to the pub which is lovely, but pricey with a limited menu but don't be put off the campsite it is spot on and was £14 per night.
Adequate facilities. I would recommend to families as well so long as you can live without a play park but the kids will happily look at the sheep and llamas on the hillside

A relatively small, friendly site on a working farm.
Even though we arrived fairly late on the Friday afternoon of a Bank Holiday weekend, the owners were happy to accommodate us and the site was far from crowded, unlike the vast majority of others we had viewed. They even helped us select a less water logged pitch as the weather was so atrocious (just want to point out that this wasn't a problem unique to Thirlspot on this particular weekend!)!
It has a lovely pub with shop(which was more gift shop than camp shop, but had basics such as bacon, milk, butter etc in a chiller) literally nextdoor. It was lovely to be able to run across and eat there rather than try and cook a meal in a tent doorway in torrential rain!
I guess you could say the facilities were fairly basic, but I don't mean that in a negative way; it had everything we needed; free showers with plenty of hot water and a toilet block that was kept as clean as possible considering the weather and muddy boots! There are separate male and female blocks, each with two showers. Neither my partner nor I had to wait to use a shower.
The owners were friendly and helpful, and for the most part let us do our own thing. We were able to park next to our tent which was a big bonus. When we asked if we could have a disposable BBQ they went off and found a brick for us to put it on so it didn't scorch the grass (much nicer than just being told a flat 'no'!).
As far as I am aware there were no facilities to wash clothes or freeze ice packs, but we didn't require them so didn't ask. There was an outdoor sink and draining board for washing pots and pans, not ideal in very wet weather, and it also seemed to have no hot water which made cleaning greasy cookware quite difficult. But again it was kept lovely and clean and most campers seemed to respect this and helped maintain standards themselves.
What the site lacks in facilities it certainly makes up for in location. The views are spectacular, and you can access Helvellyn from a track that runs directly from the back of the farm. There was a bus stop right outside by the pub.
Campers were asked to keep the noise down after 10pm, but not to ridiculous levels where you weren't allowed to talk to each other! While the site is located near a main road, we didn't find traffic noise to be a huge problem and slept well(but the wind was howling and we had walked Helvellyn so were fairly shattered!).
Lots of room for children to run around, but no playground etc to speak of.
I became quite fond of it here in the short time I stayed and would happily stay again.
