A Campsite at a Pub! A great weekend away, amazing view from our Pitch, which was Hardstanding with EHU and all for £16. 00 per night. The Campsite doesn't take Cards, but you can get cashback in the Pub. We arrived around 3. 00pm on Friday. The Warden directed us to our pitch and pointed out the facilities block etc. The Hardstanding pitch was reasonably level, but we did use a ramp to get it spot on (yes, we're a bit obsessive!). There's a fair bit of gravel, and for some it might resemble a Car Park, but the location and the views soon make you forget that. Much of the Site is devoted to seasonal pitches, and there are 5-6 statics as well as the tourers. The site seemed very friendly.

We pre-booked dinner in the pub, it was very busy so we'd recommend booking. The beers were excellent and from local breweries (Three Tuns and Salopian). The food very good value pub grub, my haddock and chips was very nice, and no complaints about the portion size and of course washed down with a couple of pints.

We were up early Saturday morning and went for a walk to 'Rodney's Pillar'. You can see this Monumenent on the nearby hill, from the site and it's well worth the effort to walk up to it. We took the long route, about 2. 6miles. It's very steep, but the views from the top are just amazing.

Departure time is 12. 00pm. But we were keen to have lunch in the pub before leaving. We were told to unhook from the EHU, and leave our 'van until we were ready to leave. I was a little disappointed that they don't serve a Sunday Roast (it's not something I eat often, so I was looking forward to it) but there was plenty to tempt us from the Menu. I opted for the gammon chops, which was a great choice, my partner had the lasagne. Neither of us had room for a dessert!

The facilities block is fairly basic, but clean, and adequate, with a separate rooms for toilets and showers.

This is a site well worth a visit, and we would definitely return. A really relaxing weekend.

I had one night staying at The Royal Hill site with our dog, what a fantastic site and very dog friendly too!

Bill, the site contact, was very helpful and friendly along with the staff at the pub, the dog was allowed in the bar too which was a bonus.

We were placed in the main part of the site (not by the river) next to the pub car park and had great views across the river. All the grass was cut well and it all looked pretty level.

Toilets were clean with plenty of loo roll Sunday night, but this had all disappeared by Monday morning, so either someone wasn't very well or it had been stolen!

I didn't use the showers so can't comment on them.

The dish washing facilities were fine although the hot water was only lukewarm, but it did the job.

Security on site was good as you needed a key for the barrier.

Loads of nearby walks for the dog, however it all had to be by road as she couldn't get over (or around) the stiles which was a shame. There were some open fields nearby so she had plenty of exercise.

The pub had some nice real ales and the food looked good and very reasonably priced.

All in all a great site and will definitely be returning with the missus (and the dog. ) and stay a bit longer.

Just got back from a great few days camping - the first night night spent in a little overnighter tent at the Royal on the way from Gloucestershire to Snowdonia.

What a great pub campsite. From the moment we rang earlier in the day, to check they did food on a Sunday evening (they do!), to leaving the next morning they were friendly and helpful.

We stayed in the field next to the river ( just opposite the pub - only over a hardly used lane, including the tractors). We were the only ones there and although the main campsite was busier there was no noise all night.

The toilets and showers were very clean and locked for the use of campsite users only. The field we camped in also had a locked gate (deposit for keys was £5).

The pub itself was fab. Very friendly staff and locals. The beers were good. The food was tasty, well priced and the portions substantial.

Would definitely recommend it and would stay again.

We chose the first weekend of the school holidays to go camping and, after not getting into our original choice of campsite, we were recommended to try the Royal Hill.

After travelling down narrow country lanes we arrived at the site. It is in very pretty surroundings and within crawling distance of the pub.

The owner was very helpful and pointed us in the direction of our pitch. He helped us set up the electric hook up, asked if we required any fresh fruit and veg (delivered daily by a very helpful man with a van), and generally ensured that we settled in. Nothing seemed like too much trouble.

Security of the site is very good with a locked barrier into the actual camping fields. The shower blocks are basic but very serviceable with plenty of hot water. The toilets are beautifully clean.

The food at the Pub is very nice and the service is very good. It isn't badly priced either for the enormous portions that you receive.

The only small negative comment that I would make is that as we were next to the access gate, it was a bit noisy at night and early in the morning with people coming and going, but not enough to raise a complaint.

Overall we had an excellent weekend and will definitely be returning again.

We've just come back from a pleasant stay at this campsite, toilet facilities are very good, there are two showers marked gents, but they are actually unisex, plus in the ladies toilets there are two wet rooms ideal if someone in your party is disabled, there are plastic garden type chairs in the wetrooms, in case they're needed, but the showers and toilets were cleaned everyday,

There is also a preparation area for food if you don't have anywhere to prepare food, there are picnic benches dotted about campsite.

The campsite is nicely laid out, and kept looking very nice. With beautiful views, its on a very quiet road at night, so sleeping shouldn't be a problem,

Bill who runs the site, and the bar staff are very helpful, our dog locked us out of our car, by hitting the central locking button, while we were setting up, and the pub let us use their phone to call our breakdown recovery, who came and opened the car,

Now the negatives, although dogs are allowed on site they are not keen on the dogs going into the pub, and you are asked to drink outside if you have a dog, especially if it malts like ours, although we weren't told that the first night we were there, and the bar staff especially Ruth made a fuss of our dog, so it did seem a bit strange to be told afterwards they don't allow dogs in the pub !

The hook up is ok, but if you try to boil an electric kettle, expect the electric hook up to trip out at least 3 times so take gas and a gas kettle

If youre going for the fishing check on the height of the river before you go, as the river Severn was at its lowest near the campsite, locals told us that's its normal for it to be really low at the campsite, so its better for fly fishing, salmon were caught there, but we had gone for normal fishing, plus there's not many places on the bank to fish from, its probably better to take waders, we ended up going into Shrewsbury for fishing on both days,

There was a bit of confusion over the price of the campsite compared to the website, but it was sorted out okay, just in case key money isnt mentioned when you book, its £5 deposit for the key, that gets you through the gates, and gives you access to the toilets and showers,

Security is very important on this site, which is very good,

We were also told to leave a caravan here on a monthly basis it costs £60 which is good value,

The nightly rate for the campsite for trailer tents/large tents and caravans including hook up is £15 a night which is good value, we will probably not go back, but only because dogs arent allowed in the pub, as its nice to have a drink with fellow campers after a days fishing, and swap stories, and we don't take our dog on holiday with us to leave her in the tent, but we would recommend the site if you want peace and quiet in a really peaceful and very pretty site, and you're not taking a dog with you.

An ideal caravan site for getting away from it all. Enjoy the tranquillity and beautiful scenery. If you like to fish, cycle or canoeing this place offers all you need. As quoted the toilet block is in need of updating. We have just heard that a new manager has taken over the site and it looks like the some attention is now being given to the toilets, etc. Your will certainly get value for money, from as little as £12 per night and no additional costs for awnings, etc. It is an adult only site, which suits us fine. We wanted quietness and tranquillity and got it. You also get a warm welcome from their lovely friendly Labrador dog on your arrival! Needless to say dogs are admitted on the site. Another plus point is the excellent Royal Hill Inn which is situated at the front of the site. The meals are reasonably priced and excellent. Try it, we think you will like it.

Quite surprised to be the first to review what I would regard as a very nice campsite, comprising of a large well kept field for tents / caravans with some ehu points around the perimeter and another field with some permanent holiday caravans.

There is limited hard standing so best to ring before if required although ground was firm during my visit. The site is set in an idyllic situation close to the river Severn and the Welsh hills in the distance, very little traffic noise except for the odd agricultural vehicle.

The toilet block a little out-dated but functional with free hot showers. There is an animal enclosure for children however not much else for them to do.

The big plus point though for me was the excellent Royal Hill inn next door which does food every eve. Except Mon. Had an excellent pizza(pizza night Tues) for a fiver and two locally sourced real ales at a reasonable price. Heard no noise at closing time from the pub.

The site is situated on a national cycle route Welshpool-Shrewsbury and is fairly flat,I cycled partway to Shrewsbury to Montford Bridge on very quiet country lanes. There are several public footpaths about and a dog walk / nature trail behind the campsite, seems they do canoeing here also. No big shops about locally so come well stocked up for a long stay. Paid £8 for one with ehu.
