This campsite is in an amazing location - not many places you get to camp right next to a loch and have such a great view right from your tent door. There are trees around to camp amongst too and fire pits around so you can have a fire if you want - firewood on sale at the inn.
When we were there it was too boggy to drive onto so had to wheelbarrow our stuff from carpark - not too far but worth knowing when you're packing!
The field was quite boggy in places so you had to pick your spot carefully but there was plenty of choice when we were there so not a problem.
Toilets basic, there's a pot washing place and some showers - not much hot water around. All perfectly usable though and clean enough. Didn't actually try the showers so can't comment on them.
The inn is lovely and food good and great value. Staff are also very friendly and helpful.
Great value at £5 per person per night.
Would definitely go back.

A beautiful campsite in a remarkably remote location (under 2 hours from Edinburgh, a bit over that from Glasgow, but you would think it was double that!)
We were a group of women and children ranging in age from 2 to 50+, and the site suited our needs perfectly. The youngest member of the group was happy paddling (in the loch and in the puddles after an incredibly wet few weeks).
We were able to set up several small tents at a very reasonable price. The site allows fires (with fire pits) and BBQs, and we also had a gazebo up to keep off the intermittent rain. Our own and the other children on the site seemed to be having a grand old time, although there are many opportunities to get wet/muddy - spare clothes are a must!
One of our group is a regular visitor to Tibbie Shiels and so I am reliably informed that the toilets have been replaced since 2010 - she said the same as the previous reviewer of the old toilets, but the new block is perfectly adequate, if a little basic. There are a couple of (also basic) showers and a washing up area.
I would definitely come back here - it's on the Southern Upland Way and I noticed several marked cycle routes off the road. The site is basic but well positioned - I expected it to be unmanageably muddy and waterlogged after the appalling weather, but despite some puddles, it was fine.
The only downside for me is that as far as I know, it is not on any public transport route - I borrowed a car for the weekend and it's definitely worth it, but a long walk or cycle if you're a non-driver.

The only thing that let this site down is the facilities. The toilets and showers are awful. Thought when we arrived they were for workmen.
The owner did say that planning for new toilet, shower block which is in the hands of the council panning department so fingers X they get the go ahead as I would defo go back if that was the case. The owner maybe should put a wee notice up explaining what the plans are for next year.
But all in all the site is lovely, rural and stunning views. My son and husband spent most of their time fishing on the loch which is on site. Permits are bought from the bar. My husband says at £4. 00 a permit that's good.
We didn't try the food in the pub But we did get the campers takeaway menu once which was good.
You arent permitted to take your own drink on site but you can purchase it from the bar. The owner does keep check to see if your drinking bit sad really.
Apart from that I have to say over all its an alright site if your use to roughing it.
Oh one last thing midgies stock up on repellent as they come out in force!

This site is a favourite. On the banks of the gorgeous St Mary's Loch with lots of hills to explore and stunning views.
In an out-of-the-way location with a cosy pub that sells decent, good value, pub grub - perfect after a long walk. Lovely wood burner in the bar.
The loos and showers are basic, but always clean and do what they say on the tin. Plenty of space for washing up.
You can park in the trees or on the loch's edge. It's a chilled out place for people who want to get away from it all and have a few pints. It was very quiet on our last visit, which suited us!
We love it here - but we aren't into sites with big clubhouses and huge play areas for kids. This site is about the location and the great outdoors (in our opinion!).

Stayed here over the royal wedding weekend.
Received a very warm welcome. The views of the loch were stunning. Facilities are very basic. Showers and washing up sink are located in a green cabin and are bit dingy but the toilets are inside the restaurant and were warm and clean.
The food in the restaurant was delicious and the bar staff were so friendly.
The location is very rural and the nearest town where there is a co-op supermarket is 12 miles away although you can buy bbq essentials at the campsites.
At £5 per person per night, it was definitely value for money. I would stay here again just for the peace and tranquillity.

Just spent the weekend on this site. Toilets are 3 portoloos which were virtually unusable due to the mess inside. You can however use the toilets inside the inn during opening hours. I preferred to walk the few hundred yard over the bridge to the cafe which has public toilets next door. Whoever looks after these should get an award, they are spotless even having hand soup at the sink, you don't see that much these days. The cafe serves up some pretty good stuff to at reasonable prices. There are 2 showers housed in a portacabin which as far as I was told by other campers only has cold water it also houses a sink to get washed in and one for dishes.
